Ryan Conquers The Challenges At Elko Speedway
8/13/05 – (Elko, MN) Jake Ryan faced several challenges going into
racing action Saturday night at Elko Speedway. Along with the normal
pressures of any race night, Ryan faced the pressure of a host of visiting
competitors representing the Minnesota Late Model Challenge Series. Ryan
also had the challenge of keeping his win streak in place. When all was
said and done, he got the better of any challenge thrown at him in winning the
Minnesota Late Model Challenge Series Lube Tech 50. Steve Schultz had a
dominant run on his way to the win in the GhostRiders Sportsmen Lube Tech 30
while Dustin Mann picked off his first win in the Coca-Cola Thunder Cars Apple
Valley Ford 25 and Scott King motored to victory lane in the ACDelco Power
Stocks Apple Valley Ford 20. Two man Cruiser wins were picked off by the
teams of Jeff Ewanika/Steve Jensen and Jay Simon/Phil Peterson.
A lap 37 caution may have been the key to Ryan’s win. Steve Anderson
took the lead from pole sitter Tim Olson on the 23rd circuit and looked set up
and ready to head for victory lane. Ryan, starting 12th on the grid had
worked his way up to fifth by that point and was chasing Donny Reuvers to the
front. Ryan followed Reuvers around Olson on the 31st lap and the two
would battle for the second spot side by side with Anderson holding a
comfortable lead. A broken spindle on the Brian Johnson car would bring
out the yellow and tighten the field. Two laps after the restart, Ryan
was able to move around Reuvers for second and just three laps later moved
around Anderson for the lead. A lap 46 caution gave Anderson one last
try to regain the lead, but Ryan was up for the Challenge. Anderson held
on for second followed by Reuvers, Olson and Jason Schneider.
“Four in a row,” Ryan exclaimed from victory lane. “With the
cooler temperatures we may not have been as strong as the last three wins, but
we got it done anyway. Just being able to get around Donny and then
Steve at that point of the race shows that this car is up for any
challenges.” Ryan also took time in the post race interview to
apologize to a race fan who in Ryan’s words “got bopped” by an errant
throw of a race team t-shirt earlier in the night, proving that he should
stick to racing and forget about any aspirations in the world of baseball.
The Minnesota Late Model Challenge Series will return to Elko Speedway in a
special Friday night, August 26th appearance. “Five Dollar Friday”
will feature all tickets at just five dollars each. The special event
also includes an appearance of Big Dawg Monster Truck, Hornets, a Queen Bee
Hornet race for the ladies, the Minnesota Quarter Midget’s and Spectator
Drags. Racing will begin that night at 7:30pm.
Schultz made good from his outside front row starting spot in claiming the
GhostRiders Sportsmen win. He checked out on the field until a lap 25
caution tightened it up. With Doug Brown running second, Tom Kamish and
Shannon Eriksen battled side by side for third for the first 12 laps allowing
Schultz to open the lead. When Kamish cleared Eriksen the shuffle was on
as Mike Skaja moved toward the front bringing both Justin and Paul Neisius
along. Skaja lost out on a podium finish as his car loosened and went
around with just one lap to go. On the restart, both Paul and Justin
Neisius were able to get around Brown for second and third with Greg Bieber
following Brown across the line for fifth.
It took the race’s only caution and ten laps for Mann to gain the point and
hold on for his first Coca-Cola Thunder Car 25 win. The young upstart
moved around John Norris on the seventh lap for second and set his sights on
leader Dan Weber. Mann was able to gain the lead from Weber on the
restart with some fierce side by side racing going on behind. James
Lindgren moved around Norris for third while division points leader Matt
Carlander began his assault on the field. Carlander moved around Norris
for fourth on the 13th circuit and would take third away from Lindgren two
laps later. Carlander continued toward the front taking second from
Weber with two laps left but didn’t have enough to reel in Mann. Weber
held on for third followed by Ted Reuvers and Lindgren.
It appeared Mike Meszaros was on his way to the win in the ACDelco Power
Stocks 20. But the leader took a spin just two laps from the end giving
way to a hard charging Scott King. King methodically worked his way
through the field from his 9th starting spot moving to fifth by lap 5.
On the eighth circuit he was able to get past Heath Herman for fourth, and
then lined up behind Chase Weber in third just three laps later. Weber
closed up too tight on Meszaros on the 18th circuit causing the yellow and
sending the two lead cars to the back of the field. King inherited the
lead and held off Jeremy Rypkema for the win. Bud Kane finished third
followed by Dustin Tuma and Matt Ryan.
Racing continues on Saturday night, August 20th as College City Homes presents
the annual Dwain Behrens Memorial featuring the Budweiser Super Late Models,
twin features for the GhostRiders Sportsmen, Coca-Cola Thunder Cars and
ACDelco Thunder Cars. Gates will open at 5:30 with qualifying at 6:15
and racing at 7pm. For more information, call the speedway at
