Reuvers Dominates, Edwards Flips At Elko Speedway
(Elko, MN, 7/9/05) Elko Speedway Budweiser Super Late Model points
leader Donny Reuvers showed off his driving skills Saturday night in front of
a near capacity crowd that earlier in the evening was wowed by Nextel Cup Star
Carl Edwards and his trademark back-flip. Reuvers dominated the second
half of the 50 lap feature in posting the win. Doug Brown got around
Steve Schultz for the GhostRiders Sportsmen 30 victory, while Matt Carlander
headed to victory lane in the Coca-Cola Thunder Car 25 and Steve Klose earned
the win in the ACDelco Power Stocks 20.
Nextel Cup Stars Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray and Jason Leffler joined Edwards
in two ten-lap shootouts using Super Late Models supplied by Reuvers, Jake
Ryan, Jason Schneider and Jon Lemke. Edwards won the second of the two
races, edging out McMurray at the line. The crowd rose to its feet while
Edwards was exiting the race car in hopes of one of the trade-mark back
flips. Edwards never gave it a second thought as he climbed right onto
the Ryan supplied car and gave the audience exactly what it had hoped to
see. "These are really great cars to run," said Edwards from
victory lane. "I wish I could stay and race with these guys all
night long." The Nextel Cup entourage had to head back to Chicago
for Sundays running of the USG Sheetrock 400.
Reuvers grabbed the lead on the first circuit and worked his way through
lapped traffic on his way to the Super Late Model win. Jacob Goede got
underneath Darrin Giles for the second spot on the seventh lap and stayed in
pursuit of Reuvers throughout the race. Giles, who suffered a blown
engine in practice, was forced to retire his racecar on the 11th lap when his
back-up engine started to show signs of smoke. That brought Brian
Johnson up to third with Jake Ryan in hot pursuit. Goede, Johnson and
Ryan diced in a pack through lapped traffic but had to settle for second,
third and fourth with Conrad Jorgenson bringing his ride home in fifth.
Steve Schultz wrestled the early lead away from Dan Whitehead and Cliff Adee
but couldn't hold off a determined Brown in the GhostRiders Sportsmen
30. Brown moved to third on the fourth lap and was lined up in the
second spot when the races only caution flew on lap eleven. Brown kept
the pressure on Schultz until finally getting by with five laps left.
Greg Bieber held off a hard charging Jonathan Eilen for third while Josh
Larsen claimed fifth.
It appeared to be a case of shear determination for Carlander as the defending
division champion showed patience in picking up the win in the all-green
Coca-Cola Thunder Cars 25. David Sellner, Jr. got the early lead from
Keith Barta to set the pace. The scramble at the front continued on in
the early going as Don Whitebear made a strong move on the high side of the
track to get around both Sellner and Barta for the lead. Just a handful
of circuits later, Carlander was able to go deep into turn one for the pass,
the lead and the eventual win. Whitebear finished a strong second while
Ted Reuvers posted a third place finish followed by Sellner and Adam Wolfe.
Klose was able to withstand the ACDelco Power Stocks only caution to put his
mount into victory lane. Klose pulled away from Jeremy Rypkema in the
early stages of the race. However, division point leader Jeff Partington
was able to move into the second spot on the 11th lap and began reeling Klose
in. The races only caution flew on the 17th lap but Klose was up to the
task on the restart and the final three laps in posting the win.
Partington settled for second followed by Rypkema, Matt Ryan and Joe Fierst.
Saturday night, July 16 will feature an appearance of the Charter Cable High
Speed Zone at Elko Speedway. Fans will be able to attempt to beat the
best in the nation in a simulator. The top four at Elko Speedway will
advance to a go-kart race shootout during intermission. Gates will open
