Lemke, Schultz, Carlander And Mann Claim Titles At Elko Speedway
(Elko, MN) Jon Lemke cruised to a second place finish Saturday night at
Elko Speedway, enabling the veteran to take season honors in the Budweiser
Super Late Model division. Lemke claimed his second championship in his
career at Elko. Steve Schultz won both the 30-lap feature and the season
championship for the Elko Sportsmen while Matt Carlander was crowned champion
in the Coca-Cola Thunder Cars and Dustin Mann took honors in the ACDelco Power
Stock division.
Jake Ryan led from the start in the Gopher State Mortgage 40 for the Budweiser
Super Late Models. The division rookie withstood three restarts, each
time getting the better of Brian Johnson. On the final restart on lap
14, Lemke was able to work to the high side of Johnson grabbing the second
spot. Jason Schneider and Darrin Giles swapped the fourth spot four
times in the last seventeen circuits with Schneider winning that battle while
Giles settled for fifth.
A determined Schultz led every lap on his way to the win and the season
championship for the Elko Sportsmen. The Gopher State Mortgage 30 came
down to a two car race after the only caution flew on the eighth
circuit. Mike Skaja broke from the pack with Schultz on the
restart. Skaja and Schultz navigated the final six laps side by side
with Schultz holding on for the win. Duane Halvorson, Doug Brown and
Greg Bieber rounded out the top five.
Carlander was forced to watch most of the Coca-Cola Thunder Car Gopher State
Mortgage 25 from the infield in a caution filled affair that saw the
division’s only female competitor, Kerry Estes, head for victory lane with
her first ever feature win. Carlander was involved in the races second
caution that retired his car after the eleventh lap. Estes grabbed the
lead on the restart of lap 21 and withstood two more cautions for the
win. She was followed across the line by James Lindgren, Jerry Thomsen,
Ray Sandgren and Kevin Turek.
Mann ran all night long with the lead pack in the Gopher State Mortgage 20 for
the ACDelco Power Stocks only to drop from the top five in the races closing
laps. However it was enough for Mann to claim his first season
championship. Jeff Partington continued his late season division
dominance in driving away to the win. Chase Weber was able to move to
the runner-up spot on the last lap followed by Kelly Wefel, Tim Hollen and
Jeff Cook.
Two more events are scheduled at Elko Speedway before the race season is
completed. The speedway will host an Eve of Destruction on Saturday
September 25 and then cap off the season with the Thunder Car Nationals on
Saturday, October 2. Fans can get tickets and information by calling
