Ryan Roars To Second Win Of The Year At Elko Speedway
(Elko, MN) – Farmington’s Jake Ryan survived numerous restarts on his way
to his second Budweiser Super Late Model win of the season Saturday night at
Elko Speedway. The first year division driver claimed the checkered flag
in the Wynn’s 40. Ryan started fifth on the field and narrowly escaped
the spinning cars of points leader Jon Lemke (Greenfield) and Prior Lake’s
Chad Walen. Both those drivers were relegated to the back of the
field. Ryan chose the high line on the restart and battled Lakeville’s
Brian Johnson before taking the point on the 12th circuit. A lap 31 five
car incident brought out the red flag claiming both Lonsdale’s Steve
Anderson and Walen’s mounts. This set up one last restart showdown
between Ryan and Johnson. Ryan showed strength in putting his car
immediately to the point. Johnson settled for a strong second followed
by Jeff Martin (Webster), Lemke, who fought his way back through the field
from the 18th spot, and Bloomington’s Dean Cornelius.
Red was also the color of choice in the Wynn’s 30 for the Elko
Sportsman. A five car pile-up on the first turn of the race brought out
a quick red that ended in the retiring of Steve Schultz’s (Webster)
car. On the restart, Rick McNamara (Rosemount) grabbed the lead from
Mason City, IA’s Amy Woodward and Prior Lake’s Dean Leffler.
Hasting’s Paul Neisius, who had been involved in a heat race incident, began
to make his assault on the field getting by Oakdale’s Jeff Choban for the
fourth spot. Just three laps later, Neisius brought Savage’s Doug
Brown with him around the high side of Woodward for third and fourth. It
took Neisius just five more laps to claim the lead for good. Brown was
able to grab the second spot from McNamara on the 19th lap but was never able
to reel in Neisius. The strongest run of the feature may have been
performed by New Prague’s Mike Skaja. Skaja was involved in a heat
race incident that totally ripped away all the sheet metal on his car.
He started the feature at the back of the field and worked his way up to a
fifth place finish, behind Neisius, Brown, McNamara, and Leffler.
Dustin Mann of Dundas showed strength in the ACDelco Power Stocks Wynn’s 25
only to be disqualified in post race inspections. Mann started from the
pole and thought he had his first win of the season. Apple Valley’s
Brock Weber inherited the victory after starting third. Scott King
(Lakeville) was also sent packing after post race inspection giving up his
fourth place run. New Market’s Chad Tuma was awarded the second place
spot followed by Lonsdale’s Dustin Tuma.
Lakeville’s Kevin Lutz also thought he won the Wynn’s 20 for the Coca-Cola
Thunder Cars. However, Lutz was the third post race inspection
victim. The win was awarded to Prior Lake’s Brent King who had a
mirror full of close racing going on behind him. Faribault’s Matt
Carlander grabbed the second spot followed by Ted Reuvers (Dundas) and
Lakeville’s Conrad Jorgenson.
A large contingent of Hornet entries was the cause for two separate
features. In the first Wynn’s 12, Farmington’s Mike Pederson took
the honors followed by Tyler James (Inver Grove Heights), Mike Flaa
(Lakeville), Matt Wieman (Owatonna) and Matt Paukert (Shakopee).
The second Wynn’s 12 was a wild affair. While two young drivers beat
on each other in the middle of the pack (Tim Ryan and Mike Forbord, both
Lakeville), the win went to Elko’s Robert Schnichels. He was followed
across the line by Mike Kawell (Elko), Mike Anderson (Coon Rapids), Travis
Larson (Burnsville) and Kevin Kawell (Morristown).
Racing continues Saturday night June 19 with Coca-Cola Night at the
Races. Featured divisions will be the Budweiser Super Late Models, Elko
Sportsmen, ACDelco Power Stocks, Coca-Cola Thunder Cars and a special
appearance of the Winged Figure Eights. Gates open at 5:30 with the
first race at 7. Elko Speedway is located just 30 minutes south of
downtown Minneapolis, a mile west of Highway 35 on Exit 76. For more
