Cornelius Roars to Elko Win
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN September 6, 2003--Bloomington's Dean Cornelius followed up an early
evening Heat win by leading the final 35 laps to dominate the BUDWEISER 40
NASCAR Late Model feature Saturday September 6th at Elko Speedway, while point
leader Dan Fredrickson moved one step closer to his first Elko title by making
a late charge to finish second and head to the September 13th NASCAR
Championships with a 20 point lead over Rosemount's Steve Murgic. In other
NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series action, Hastings' Paul Neisius topped the MILLER
LITE Sportsman, Lakeville's Mark Storlie dominated the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars,
Prior Lake's Kerry Estes topped the Street Stocks and ASA award winning crew
chief Bond Suss topped the Hornet feature highlighting D R HORTON/WINDSOR
WINDOWS/GLYNN BUILDING PRODUCTS Night.
In the NASCAR Late Model main, Veseli's Rick Burns powered to the early lead,
with Cornelius able to motor by to the lead on a fifth lap restart following a
harrowing tangle that saw rookie Scott Brandt narrowly avoid severe contact
with the turn one wall. Once Cornelius put his Herman's Landscape Supply
Chevrolet at the front of the 21 car field, the only answer seemed to be his
margin of victory, but with two cautions and lapped traffic helping out, New
Germany's Jacob Goede made a strong run to second before point leader Dan
Fredrickson finished off a determined charge to wrestle the position away. In
the end, neither Fredrickson or Goede had anything to say as Cornelius posted
his second Elko win of 2003, with Fredrickson, Goede, Steve Murgic and Donny
Reuvers rounding out the top five.
In the MILLER LITE NASCAR Sportsman, Hastings' Paul Neisius edged away from
Lakeville's Greg Bieber early on and despite three late race cautions would
not be headed as he posted his divisional leading fifth feature win of 2003,
while Bieber held off Hampton's Jonathan Eilen to post a seasonal best
runnerup finish, with Rosemount's Duane Halvorson and Lakeville's Lynn
Peterson battling through the field to round out the top five.
In the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars, Lakeville's Mark Storlie knew the only way he
could keep his fading championship hopes alive would be to win the season's
final two points events and hope for some help along the way. Well, Storlie
took care of his end of the bargain as he took the lead on lap two of 25 and
then roared away to the win, giving himself a birthday present along the way.
Prior Lake's Brent Kane used a bit of the "chrome horn" to claim
second, with point leader and runnerup Conrad Jorgenson of Lakeville and Matt
Carlander of Faribault third and fourth and Dundas' Ted Reuvers racing home
fifth.
In the Street Stocks, Prior Lake's Kerry Estes followed her boyfriend
Storlie's lead as she raced out to the early advantage and then held off a
determined run by Eagan's Jeff Cook to score the win and present herself a
birthday present along the way. Following Estes and Cook, Webster's Clint
Grandal Jr. roared home third after receiving a pre-race public address e-mail
greeting from his girlfriend who was recently deployed with her Minnesota
National Guard unit to Bosnia, while Northfield's Josh Emerson and Apple
Valley's Chase Weber rounded out the top five.
Topping off the action, were 40 Hornet competitors and the four cylinder
wonders amazed the crowd with Lakeville's Bond Suss, who one week earlier had
led his GREAT CLIPS ASA pit crew to the National Championship title, taking a
night off to relax and he worked his way in around and through the field to
capture the checkers and put an exclamation point on the busy event.
The NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series action will continue at Elko Speedway on
Saturday September 13th as WYNN'S and KEYLAND HOMES present the NASCAR DODGE
Weekly Series Season Championships. Gates will open at 5:30pm, with WASTE
MANAGEMENT Qualifying at 6pm and green flag racing at 7pm. For ticket
information, directions or any other questions, call the Racing Office at
