Schneider First To Five At Elko
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN August 30, 2003--When the 2003 NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series season
began, New Market's "Racin Jason" Schneider was happy to be in a
ride. Period. Then after 2 dnf's and some other less than stellar
performances, Schneider wondered out loud if he should back off on the racing
schedule because the fun was gone. Fast Forward to Saturday August 30, 2003
and ask the same question and the answer would be a resounding "the fun
is back" as Schneider overtook Lakeville's Steve Anderson for the lead on
lap six and then withstood a furious charge by Lakeville's Brian Johnson to
win his fifth BUDWEISER NASCAR Late Model feature of 2003 highlighting LaFavre
Homesellers Night at Elko Speedway.
At the drop of the green in the BUDWEISER 40, Bloomington's Mark Nesheim and
Lakeville's Steve Anderson wrestled for the early lead with Anderson guiding
his Anderson Air/Auto Max Taurus to the point. Schneider was also on the move
ducking under Nesheim before driving around Anderson for the lead on lap six
before the first of two cautions flew on lap seven as Steve Schultz and Jon
Lemke came together in turn three, with Farmington's Adam Royle caught up in
the aftermath sending him to the pits with terminal damage. On the restart,
Schneider quickly established a five car length advantage over Brian Johnson
with Bloomington's Dean Cornelius, Veseli's Rick Burns, New Germany's Jacob
Goede and Rosemount's Steve Murgic continuing Nesheim's slide before Kurt
Danko did the "safety dance" in turn one bringing out the final
caution on lap 12.
Once again Schneider bolted to the lead, but Johnson would drive to his old
teammates inside in pursuit of the lead, but after repeated attempts would
have to settle for second as Schneider followed up his WASTE MANAGEMENT
qualifying honors (13.950 seconds) with his fifth victory of 2003. Rounding
out the top five were Cornelius, Goede and Murgic who staged a tremendously
entertaining battle just in front of point leader Dan Fredrickson.
In the MILLER LITE NASCAR Sportsman division, Lakeville's Greg Bieber outran
Savage's Doug Brown for the early lead, with point contender Jonathan Eilen
and point leader Mike Skaja mounting early charges before the first of three
cautions flew on lap six as the Hastings' tandem of Mike Felixberger and Paul
Neisius came together in turn three to slow the action. On the restart, Bieber
regained control with Skaja and Eilen advancing as Brown was a little too
aggressive entering turn three, losing his momentum. With Bieber strutting his
stuff, Eilen made a move under Skaja and then Bieber to take the lead on lap
10, with Skaja following suit one lap later. As Eilen roared to a four car
length lead over Skaja and Rosemout's Duane Halvorson, Virginia's Andrew
Ruthenbeck looped his Chevrolet exiting turn two to bring out the second
stoppage with 10 laps to go. As Eilen held Skaja off on the ensuing restart,
Lakeville veteran Lynn Peterson moved under Halvorson for third before the
final yellow flew on lap 26 as Prior Lake's Dean Leffler went for a solo spin.
On the final restart, Eilen looked to have Skaja covered, but the New Prague
ace battled his way by Eilen exiting turn four on the final lap to secure the
win,
with
Halvorson driving by the suddenly loose Eilen, with Peterson fourth and Bieber
following up an early evening Heat win with a top five in the feataure.
In the COCA COLA Thunder Cars, Lake City's Mike Crilly paced the opening five
laps before being overtaken by Northrfield's Dave Sorem, Jr., with
Montgomery's Dave Franek and Dundas' Ted Reuvers also making a move before a
spinning Kevin Lutz of Lakeville brought out the first of three cautions on
lap 11. On the restart, Franek jumped to the lead and saw a quick caution for
Reuvers, Sorem Jr. and Lakeville's Mark Storlie again stall the action. On the
ensuing restart, a five car melee in turn one set the stage for the final
"chase to the checkers" and it would be Franek's night to shine as
he drove away to the win, with Nerstrand's Kris Morelan surviving for second
followed by Oakdale's Jeff Choban, Lakeville's Conrad Jorgenson and North
Branch's Jimmy Welton.
Surprisingly, the "clean and green" action of the evening would be
in the Street Stocks where Elko's Daryl Blohm darted out to the lead over the
28 car starting grid and never looked back in notching the win. The best
battle was in Blohm's mirror as Northfield's Dusty Parrott and Welch's Dustin
Mann staged a classic side by side battle to the delight of the overflow
crowd, with Parrott holding on for runnerup honors, while Lakeville's Scott
King reclaimed the divisional point lead by holding off Lakeville's Bob
Clingingsmith for fourth.
Topping off the action were the CRUISERS and the fans saw a wide variety of
style, talent and racing technique displayed and when the dust settled,
Lakeville's Phil Peterson and Jay Simon tallied the win in the first 12
lapper, while the Northfield duo of Bill Gilomen and Paul O'Dette captured the
second feature.
The NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series action continues at Elko Speedway on Saturday
September 6th as D.R. HORTON/WINDSOR WINDOWS/GLYNN BUILDING PRODUCTS will
