Fredrickson, Eilen Dominate Beer Battles At Elko
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN August 16, 2003--Elko's Dan Fredrickson and Hampton's Jonathan Eilen
each led 30 laps enroute to their 3rd victories of the 2003 NASCAR DODGE
Weekly Series season Saturday August 16th at Elko Speedway highlighting WASTE
MANAGEMENT/ARCTIC CAT Night at the 3/8ths mile speedplant. For Fredrickson, it
gave him a little more breathing room in the BUDWEISER NASCAR Late Model title
chase, while Eilen used his victory to keep his MILLER LITE NASCAR Sportsman
title hopes alive.
In the BUDWEISER 40 for the NASCAR Late Models, Dundas' Donny Reuvers and
Webster's Jeff Martin were joined by New Germany's Jacob Goede in the
early battle for the point, with Lakeville's Steve Anderson and Fredrickson
rounding out the top five. Just seven laps in, Martin raced to the outside of
Reuvers for the lead, with Fredrickson following the same line to second just
one lap later. As Martin continued in the lead, Fredrickson showed tremendous
power as he drove by Martin for the lead on lap 10 and then just drove away
from the field, posting a very impressive 12 car length victory over Martin.
Bloomington's Dean Cornelius posted a strong third place finish, driving past
Goede on lap 16 and then dueling with Martin for the final 24 markers, while
point runnerup Steve Murgic of Rosemount rounded out the top five after
chasing down Reuvers and Lakeville's Dan Ryan who was making his first start
of 2003.
In the MILLER-LITE NASCAR Sportsman, the season title hopes might by
fading but don't tell the Eilen Boys! The challenge on this night for the team
was to get the rebuilt Chevrolet dialed in following a hard crash the previous
week and let "Lightning" go to work. For Jonathan Eilen, work
couldn't have gone better as he outpowered Mike Felixberger and Doug Brown for
the early lead, with Lynn Peterson, Paul Neisius and Duane Halvorson also in
the hunt. As Eilen rode in the clean air, things heated up for Felixberger as
Peterson drove to the bottom on lap four to take the runnerup honors away,
with Neisius following suit before the caution flew on lap 14 as Amy Woodward
got a bumper from Matt Marschall and spunt in turn three. On the restart,
Eilen was able to chase Peterson away and drove on to the victory, with
Neisius third, point leader Mike Skaja fourth and Josh Larson fifth.
The COCA-COLA Thunder Cars once again showed controlled agression as they were
the only division to race caution free in their feature. As the green flew,
pole sitter Dave Sorem Jr. lost power in his Chevy with Roger Meyer darting to
the lead, with Dave Sellner Jr., Ted Reuvers and Mark Storlie in pursuit. It
was Reuvers who would make the first charge at Meyer, bypassing Sellner on lap
four before a fast closing Jimmy Welton pushed Reuvers by Meyer, with Storlie,
Conrad Jorgenson and Matt Carlander also on the march. With Reuvers battling
with Welton for the lead, Storlie and Carlander were also locked in a duel for
third and fourth and both position battles ended within two laps of each other
as Welton took the point on lap 12 and Storlie moved to third on lap 14. Once
in the top three, Storlie marched by Reuvers and then caught Welton for the
lead on lap 17 and drove home to the win, with Conrad Jorgenson working his
late race magic to finish second while Carlander outmuscled Welton for third.
The EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks also provided many thrills and
spills along the way in their 20 lap main as five caution's slowed the pace.
Despite the cautions, second generation racers Josh Gernetz and Dustin Mann
put on a great side by side duel for the lead for the better part of 14 laps.
Following the fourth yellow, Bud Kane got a great jump on the tandem on the
restart and roared to the lead, only to have Mann attempt to drive through
Gernetz bringing out the final stoppage. Over the final five laps, Kane pulled
away from Kerry Estes and Clint Grandal Jr. for the win, with Mike Meszaros
and Corey Butler Jr. rounding out the top five.
Topping off the action were the KEYLAND HOMES LEGENDS presented by CHEERIOS
and it turned out to be a coming out party for Plymouth's James Edwards Jr.
who raced under Edina's Tom Silver for the lead on lap four and then fought
off determined charges by Northfield's Mike Tuma and then Lakeville's Dan
McGinnis in securing his first Elko Speedway victory.
The NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series action continues at Elko Speedway on Saturday
August 23, 2003 with COLLEGE CITY HOMES Night. The gathering will be the
largest hosted by Elko Speedway during the 2003 season and will feature the
"DWAIN BEHRENS 40" Memorial Race for the BUDWEISER NASCAR Late
Models, plus MILLER LITE Sportsman, COCA COLA Thunder Cars and EXHAUST PROS OF
NORTHFIELD Street Stocks, plus post race BUDWEISER FIREWORKS! For directions,
