Schneider, Eilen Share Elko Spotlight
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN August 2, 2003--Different drivers in different divisions both using
the same recipe for success? The answer would be a resounding yes as New
Market's "Racin Jason" Schneider and Hampton's Jonathan Eilen both
roared away from the competition following a late race restart to win the
BUDWEISER 40 NASCAR Late Model and MILLER LITE 30 NASCAR Sportsman main events
at Elko Speedway Saturday August 2nd highlighting OPTIMUM MORTGAGE SERVICES
night.
For Schneider, his night began by setting the WASTE MANAGEMENT qualifying
standard with a run of 13.952 seconds to edge Dundas' Donny Reuvers (13.995
seconds) for the honor. Following two action packed heat races, 21 drivers
lined up for the BUDWEISER 40 and it didn't take long for the action to heat
up. As the green flew, the front row duo of Farmington's Adam Royle and
Lakeville's Steve Anderson chased hard into turn one, with contact sending
Royle's mount hard into the wall, with Anderson spinning wildly. Following a
quick cleanup and the removal of Royle's Chevrolet, the field relined with
Bloomington's Dean Cornelius and New Market's Jason Schneider now on the front
row. As the green flew, Schneider slingshot by Cornelius to grab the lead,
which would stretch to eight car lengths by the 10 lap mark, with point leader
Jeff Martin battling with Steve Schultz, Brian Johnson and a fast closing
Steve Murgic.
The field stayed under the green until the 30th marker when Northfield's Mike
Tuma lost control exiting turn two, sending him into the back stretch wall
bringing out the second caution. On the restart, Schneider got the jump on
Cornelius and looked again to break away as Murgic roared by Johnson, Martin
and Schultz into the top three before the caution flew a final time on lap 34
as Jacob Goede lost a motor sending drivers scrambling between turns three and
four as a result. On the final restart, Schneider blocked Cornelius' attempt
and then powered to the checkers, with Murgic ducking around Cornelius for
second, with Schultz fourth and Elko's Dan Fredrickson a determined fifth
after a late race charge. For Fredrickson, the fifth place finish was good
enough to overtake Martin for the BUDWEISER Late Model point lead.
In the MILLER LITE Sportsman, the green flag waved to start the 30 lap main
and just three laps in, Andrew Ruthenbeck and Mike Felixberger tangled exiting
turn four, with point leader Mike Skaja caught in it, with all drivers able to
continue. On the restart, Northfield's Tom Sorem took the lead, with Hampton's
Jonathan Eilen roaring between Mason City, IA's Amy Woodward and Glencoe's
Josh Larson for runnerup honors. Once in second, Eilen took four laps to reel
in Sorem, darting to the point on lap seven with Larson, Duane Halvorson, Lynn
Peterson, Paul Neisius and a regrouped Skaja continuing Sorem's slide. As
Eilen kept a close eye on his competition, Peterson and Skaja began to charge
before a spinning Halvorson brought out the final caution on lap 19. On the
final restart, Larson was able to take the lead, albeit a short one as Eilen
powered back to the point on lap 20, with Peterson and Skaja also moving
around Larson, but it was Eilen's night as he followed his MILLER LITE Dash
victory with his second feature win of 2003, with Peterson, Skaja, Larson and
Felixberger rounding out the top five.
In the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars, Chaska's Dan Weber looked to put a season of
frustration behind him as he worked away from Jerry Thomsen for the early lead
and then kept a determined Dave Sellner Jr. at bay. As Weber continued to show
the way, point leader Conrad Jorgenson was making a charge nudging Roger Meyer
out of the way before darting under Thomsen to move to fourth, before he led
Dave Franek, Matt Carlander and Jeff Choban around Ray Sandgren before the
caution flew as Ted Reuvers and Kris Morelan locked horns on the main chute to
bring out the caution. On the restart, as has been the case more than once in
2003, Weber's ride didn't get up to speed as the green flew and Choban took a
short lived lead before Jorgenson drove under him for the lead and subsequent
win, with Choban a steady second and Brent Kane holding back Dave
"Frantic" Franek for third.
Topping off the action were the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks and
it was a "clean and green" evening for this thrilling group.
Rosemount's Corey Butler Jr. worked away from New Prague's Kevin Priebe for
the early lead and despite some late race pressure from Elko's Daryl Blohm and
Lakeville's Kevin Novak, completed his "clean sweep" in style
defeating the 32 car starting field.
The NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series action continues at Elko Speedway on Saturday
August 9th as MOBIL 1 and LUBE TECH present a full night of action. For
