Cornelius, Halvorson win Elko Thrillers

By Jim Burns

Elko, MN July 19, 2003--Bloomington's Dean Cornelius and Rosemount's Duane Halvorson took completely opposite routes, but both drivers journey's ended with a trip to victory lane Saturday July 19, 2003 at Elko Speedway. Cornelius overtook Rosemount veteran Steve Murgic following a late race caution to win the BUDWEISER 40 for the NASCAR Late Models, while Halvorson held off a hard charging Jonathan Eilen to win the MILLER LITE 30 for the NASCAR Sportsman, highlighting TOM EILEN AND SONS TRUCKING/TWIN CITIES FEATHERLITE Night at the 3/8ths mile speedplant.

In the NASCAR Late Model main, Steve Murgic edged away from Webster's Steve Schultz for the early lead, with Dean Cornelius, Brian Johnson and Jeff Martin also making early advances. While Murgic continued to set the pace from the outside line, Schultz kept the pressure on working the inside with success. As the field approached the midpoint in the 40 lapper, the crowd started to stir as Dundas' Donny Reuvers, who had started shotgun on the field (in pursuit of a $1,500 Eilen and Sons/Twin City Featherlite Ultimate Challenge bonus) began to close in on the top 10, but Reuvers charge would alter the eventual outcome.

With Murgic, Schultz and the fast closing Cornelius locked up in a fierce battle for the lead, Reuvers and New Prague rookie Jamie Farrell came in contact entering the second turn, sending Farrell spinning, Reuvers to the trunk and bringing out the races only caution. On the restart, Murgic powered away from Schultz, but it was Cornelius who made the bold move to the inside and completed the pass of Schultz and Murgic as he charged home with the win, with Murgic second, point leader Jeff Martin third, Schultz fourth and New Germany's Jacob Goede edging Brian Johnson for fifth.

In the MILLER LITE SPORTSMAN,  Rosemount's Duane Halvorson motored away from Northfield's Matt Marschall and Hampton's Jonathan Eilen to set a blistering early pace, with point leader Mike Skaja of New Prague bypassing Savage's Doug Brown and Marschall to work into the top three just nine laps into the 30 lap headliner. As the field neared the halfway mark, Eilen had closed in on Halvorson and began to look to the inside in an attempt to wrestle the lead away. As the fans kept a close eye on Halvorson and Eilen in the lead battle,  they saw point leader Skaja trying desperately to find a way around the leaders, with Lakeville's Lynn Peterson also closing in. With just eight laps to go, Eilen was finally even with Halvorson, but despite his diligent efforts, Halvorson was able to keep the young "hotshoe" away and rode his Premier Bank/Gopher State Mortgage Chevy to the popular win, with Eilen second, Skaja third, Lakeville's Lynn Peterson fourth (despite starting last in pursuit of the Eilen and Son/Twin City Featherlite Ultimate Challenge bonus) and Hastings' Paul Neisius rounding out the top five.

In the COCA COLA Thunder Cars, Cottage Grove's Jerry Thomsen and Nerstrand's Kris Morelan made a quick attempt to run and hide from the 22 starters, but Lakeville's Mark Storlie, Faribault's Matt Carlander and Thomsen's teammate Ray Sandgren made sure that wouldn't happen. Storlie tracked down Thomsen and then Morelan on lap nine to take the point, with Carlander following suit, dropping Thomsen out of the top three on lap ten and Morelan out of the top two just three laps later. Over the second half of the 25 lapper, Storelie was able to keep Carlander in his mirror as he charged to the win, with Carlander second, Morelan third, Sandgren fourth and Dundas' Ted Reuvers fifth as Thomsen slowed with late race mechanical woes.

In the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks, the NASCAR technical staff were the ones with the final say, at least results wise!  In the 20 lap main, Elko's Daryl Blohm appeared to be the class of the 30 starters as he walked away for the lead on the opening charge and never had to look back to see Rosemount's Corey Butler, Jr. work by Apple Valley's Brock Weber, Rosemount's Dan Johnson or Lonsdale's Chad Tuma. Even with Butler's heroics, Blohm was too good to be true as he drove to the apparent victory...KEY WORD BEING APPARENT! Following the action, the ELKO SPEEDWAY Technical staff found irregularities not only with Blohm, but also with Butler, making Chad Tuma a "clean sweep" winner, with Brock Weber moving up to second, Johnson third, Faribault's Randy Kotek and Welch's Dustin Mann  finishing fourth and fifth.

Topping off the action packed program were the two person CRUISERS and it turned into a "Simon Family Reunion" as Jay and Brad Simon of Elko swept the twin 12 lap mains to the delight of the crowd.

The NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES action continues at Elko Speedway on Saturday July 26, 2003 as Lehmans Garages present the BUDWEISER Late Models, MILLER LITE Sportsman, COCA COLA Thunder Cars, EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks, plus Elko Speedway's first ever "Ugly Truck" contest.
