Schultz Continues Rookie Romp At Elko
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN July 5, 2003--Webster's Steve Schultz roared by Farmington's
Adam Royle five laps into the BUDWEISER 40, then held off Elko's Dan
Fredrickson to become the first NASCAR Late Model driver to score three
feature wins in 2003 at Elko Speedway highlighting the July 5th COUNTRY JOE
HOMES/RIHM KENWORTH/S-K TOOLS sponsored NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES action.
The opening lap of the BUDWEISER 40 for the NASCAR Late Models would turn out
to be very telling of the action as the front row duo of Scotty Marschall and
Adam Royle went hard into the first turn and as Royle mounted a charge on the
outside, Marschall lost traction for an instant and as he checked up to right
his ride, Schultz seized the opportunity to follow Royle by, with Dan
Fredrickson, Dean Cornelius and Brian Johnson also making the move into the
top five. The battle for the lead between Royle and Schultz would be
shortlived as the Webster rookie proved to the capacity crowd that his
Chevrolet would work equally well on either the inside or the outside line as
he roared to the lead on lap five.
Once in the lead, Schultz built a sizeable advantage over Fredrickson who
worked under Royle for second on lap seven. For the next 28 laps, Schultz
looked to be on cruise control until Fredrickson got the aid of lapped traffic
to close to within two car lengths. But in the end, time ran out on
Fredrickson as Schultz raced home to the checkers continuing a remarkable
rookie season with Fredrickson, Cornelius, Johnson and Royle rounding out the
top five.
In the MILLER LITE Sportsman, Virginia's Andrew Ruthenbeck paced the
opening six laps before point leader Mike Skaja of New Prague charged under
Ruthenbeck to take the lead on lap seven with Mid-America hotshoe Jake
"the snake" Ryan also making a strong early statement, moving into
the top three. As Skaja continued to set a sizzling pace, Ryan didn't waste
any time as in four short laps he was glued to the inside of Skaja and the
pair raced high and low to the delight of the vocal crowd. Finally at the 17
lap mark was Ryan able to wrestle the lead from Skaja and over the final 13
laps went untouched to the checkers with Skaja second, Jonathan Eilen charging
home third, Doug Brown fourth and Paul Neisius fifth as he missed cashing in
the Tom Eilen and Sons/Twin City Featherlite Ultimate Challenge for the first
time this season.
In the COCA COLA Thunder Cars, Claremont's Tom Dougherty returned to victory
lane at Elko Speedway for the first time in over 10 years...but not because of
futility, he stepped away from the sport for family and career reasons which
made Saturday's victory that much more improbable! Dougherty and
Chaska's Dan Weber wheeled side by side for the first 10 laps before Dougherty
laid claim to the lead. Once at the point, the veteran Ford driver looked to
be cool under the collar as he kept a five car advantage over Faribault's Matt
Carlander and Montgomery's Dave Franek until the unthinkable happened on lap
24 as the caution flew as Prior Lake's Duane Halvorson lost the motor in his
Chevy, spewing oil throughout the first and second turn. After quick work by
the safety team the field lined up for the double file restart and Dougherty
made no mistake about it as he returned to the lead and held off Carlander for
the popular win, with Lakeville's Kevin Lutz working by Franek for third with
point leader Conrad Jorgenson rounding out the top five.
In the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks, Red Wing's Josh Gernetz and
Richfield's Jeff Bratland battled high and low for the early advantage in the
20 lapper with Bratland finally taking control on lap six. Bratland would pace
the action until lap 14 when Faribault's Joe Fierst (who had overtaken Gernetz
moments earlier), powered by for the lead. Once in control of the action,
Fierst drove away to a convincing five car length victory over Morristown's
Bud Kane, Lakeville's Bob Clingingsmith, Bratland and point leader Scott King
of Lakeville.
Rounding out the action were the KEYLAND HOMES Great North Legends and as the
fans witnessed, the action isn't confined to side by side racing as three wide
action was commonplace between Tim Brockhouse, Andy Hansen, Kim Krause, Lance
Groth and many others in the 18 car field. When the dust settled and the
checkers flew at the end of the 20 lap main, it was Prior Lake's
Brockhouse holding off Hansen and Krause for the win ending a wild night of
action at the Midwest Center for Speed.
The NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES action continues on Saturday July 12th with the
