Schneider Dominant In Second Elko Win

By Jim Burns

Elko, MN June 28, 2003--New Market's "Racin Jason" Schneider followed up his WASTE MANAGEMENT Fast Qualifying effort (14.082 seconds),  powering by Northfield's Gordy Swanson just six laps into the COCA-COLA 40, enroute to a dominant performance in winning his second BUDWEISER NASCAR Late Model feature Saturday June 28, 2003 at Elko Speedway.

Schneider and 22 fellow BUDWEISER Late Model drivers watched as Farmington's Adam Royle and Swanson battled for the early lead, with Swanson grabbing the point on lap three with Steve Murgic, Schneider and Dan Fredrickson continuing Royle's slide before the first of three cautions flew as Dan Giles went for a solo spin on lap five. On the restart, Swanson again set the pace with Schneider moving around Murgic for second, before he powered around Swanson for the lead on lap six. Once in the lead, Schneider showed his Seneca/Country Joe Homes Dodge would be formidable as he motored to a 10 car length advantage over Swanson by the 15th circuit.

As Schneider continued his dominant run, the second caution flew on lap 21 as Fredrickson got into Swason entering turn two, ending Swanson's run and sending Fredrickson to the trunk of the field. The fans were also beginning to stir as Bloomington's Dean Cornelius (who had taken the Tom Eilen & Sons Trucking/Twin Cities Featherlite Ultimate Challenge in pursuit of a $1200 bonus) had worked his way from 23rd into the top 10. On the second restart, Schneider again put distance between himself and his pursuers, but the action was hot as Murgic, Donny Reuvers and Jacob Goede were in a fierce battle for second through fourth.

The action remained under the green until Jeff Partington's Chevy lost traction on lap 31, bringing out the final stoppage. Over the final 10 laps, Schneider pulled away for his second victory of 2003, with Reuvers and Goede making late moves around Murgic for second and third, with Lakeville's Brian Johnson coming home fifth. As for Cornelius, the Bloomington "hot-shoe" wound up eighth but was admired by fans and competitors alike for the valiant effort.

In the MILLER LITE SPORTSMAN, Hastings' Paul Neisius was both lucky and good and parlayed that combination into a victory that came with a $550 bonus as Neisius captured the Twin City Featherlite/Tom Eilen and Sons Trucking Ultimate Challenge for the second time this season.  The early action in the COCA-COLA 30 saw Hastings' Mike Felixberger and Savage's Doug Brown track down Mason City, IA rookie Amy Woodward for the top two spots with point leader Mike Skaja and Lynn Peterson also on the move. Following a 10th lap caution for a spinning Greg Bieber, Skaja and Peterson moved by Brown and then Felixberger to the front of the field and appeared destined for side by side battle for top honors. One small problem, the pair made contact with each other on lap 23 and Neisius was in position to take advantage of the miscue as he ducked inside to take the lead enroute to the popular victory, with Skaja regrouping for second, Duane Halvorson returning from a cut tire charging to third with Jonathan Eilen and Brown rounding out the top five.

In the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars, New Prague's Roger Meyer raced out to the early advantage before Maplewood's Jimmy Welton and Oakdale's Jeff Choban charged by the veteran to battle for the lead. For Choban, the action fell his way as despite a 15th lap caution he was able to pull away to a six car length victory, with Nerstrand's Kris Morelan making a late race charge to post a career best runnerup finish, with point leader Conrad Jorgenson third, Faribault's Matt Carlander fourth and Montgomery's Kevin Turek posting his first career top five finish.

In the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks, Apple Valley's Chase Weber followed up an early evening Heat victory, by going wire to wire for the feature win, withFaribault's Joe Fierst, Northfield's Dusty Parrott, Webster's Clint Grandal Jr. and Birthday Boy Corey Butler Jr. of Rosemount rounding out the top five.

Topping off the action was the first ever appearance at Elko Speedway for the TQS Stock Cars and the DIRTWORKS sponsored entry of Steve Strundland bested PRO MOTORSPORTS teammates Josh and Chris Farnum for the hotly contested victory.

The action at Elko Speedway continues with a FOURTH OF JULY doubleheader, as Thursday July 3rd features the next action packed EVE OF DESTRUCTION, while the NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES action continues on Saturday July 5th with the SK HANDTOOLS/RIHM KENWORTH/COUNTRY JOE HOMES night at the races. For fan entertainment, both programs will be followed by HUGE FIREWORKS SHOWS.
