Johnson Survives For Elko Win
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN June 20, 2003--Defending BUDWEISER Late Model Champion Brian Johnson
has been searching "high and low" at Elko Speedway for answers and
Friday June 20th, the Lakeville pilot avoided two late race cautions and a
furious challenge from New Germany's Jacob Goede to get the answer he was
looking for as he captured the USG/DODGE 40 highlighting the NASCAR DODGE
WEEKLY SERIES program.
The BUDWEISER Late Model action began quickly as Elko's Dan Fredrickson topped
WASTE MANAGEMENT qualifying with a seasons best 13.967 second effort before
Goede and Farmington's Adam Royle each scored a Heat race win to set the stage
for the 40 lap headliner. At the drop of the green, it was Goede racing away
to an early six car length lead with Greenfield's Jon Lemke, Johnson and
Rosemount veteran Steve Murgic working around Lakeville's Steve Anderson
shuffling the top five before the first of three cautions flew on lap 11 as
Darren Wolke and Royle came in contact exiting turn two.
On the ensuing restart, Goede reclaimed the point only to have Lemke power by
on lap 14 to take the lead, with Johnson and Murgic following suit by the
midpoint of the race. As the action continued in sizzling side by side action,
another battle was heating up as fellow Webster residents Jeff Martin and
Steve Schultz were using each other up in pursuit of a top five position,
which eventually saw Schultz lose control of his mount on lap 29, before the
second caution flew on lap 31 as Darren Giles and John Paul Odegaard tangled
on the back chute. After the damaged ride of Giles was removed, the action
went back under the green with Murgic charging by Johnson in pursuit of leader
Lemke and to the fans delight the NASCAR veteran's diced high and low in a
classic Elko battle until the pair came in contact in turn two, with Murgic
spinning and bringing out the final caution with only four to go. On the final
restart, Johnson put his LAFAVRE HOMESELLERS/WYNN'S/ANCHOR BANK Chevrolet on
the point and outdistanced Goede and Martin for the win.
In the MILLER LITE SPORTSMAN, Hampton's Jonathon Eilen made "lightning
strike" as the 2002 Thunder Car Champion edged Hastings' Paul Neisius for
his first win of 2003. The MILLER LITE 30 saw Hastings Mike Felixberger lock
on to the early lead, with Eilen, point leader Mike Skaja and Hastings' Paul
Neisius all making early moves into the top four. After a short cat and mouse
game, Eilen stormed by Felixberger for the lead at the halfway mark and looked
to pull away, only to have the caution fly on lap 22 as Duane Halvorson and
Felixberger spun in tandem exiting the second turn. On the restart, Neisius
was able to duck under Eilen, but the 17 year old hot shoe returned the favor
on lap 25 enroute to his first career MILLER LITE SPORTSMAN win, with Neisius,
Skaja, Lakeville's Lynn Peterson and Lakeville's Jake Ryan (who took the
Ultimate Challenge in pursuit of a $475 bonus) rounding out the top five.
In the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD STREET STOCKS, the fans were again treated
to some of the wildest racing seen in the Gopher State as the 30 starters
didn't disappoint.. Lakeville's Jason Novak blew by pole sitter Kevin Novotny
for the early lead and looked to be on his way. One small problem with
that plan of action as Richfield's Tim Hollen steadily worked his way up
through the field to take the lead on lap14 of 20 and despite a late caution,
it was Hollen earning the win, with Apple Valley's Brock Weber closing hard in
second and early leader Novak rounding out the official top three.
Topping off the USG/DODGE Sponsored event was another edition of
"spectator drags" and Owatonn's Matt Wiemann beat Dundas' Jon
Conklin back to back to earn the victory.
The NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES action continues on Saturday June 28th as
COCA-COLA presents a full slate of racing action including Late Models,
Sportsman, Thunder Cars, Street Stocks and the TQS stocks. For tickets,
