Martin Slides To Elko Win

By Jim Burns

Elko, MN May 31, 2003--Webster's Jeff Martin overcame changing track conditions, three late race cautions and a late race challenge from Dundas' Donny Reuvers to win the HOT TAMALES/PAPA MURPHY'S 40 NASCAR Late Model feature Saturday night at Elko Speedway. Other NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES winners included Savage's Doug Brown in the MILLER LITE Sportsman, Lakeville's Mark Storlie in the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars and Lakeville's Scott King in the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks.

The KIDS NIGHT activities saw New Market's "Racin Jason" Schneider set the WASTE MANAGEMENT  qualifying standard of 14.057 seconds for the BUDWEISER Late Models. Following Heat race wins by Greenfield's Jon Lemke and Farmington's Adam Royle, the 23 starters lined up for the 40 lap main. At the drop of the green, Royle and Lakeville's Steve Anderson wore each other out in the battle for the lead, which Royle would finally claim five laps in. As Royle set the early tone, Martin pulled to the outside of Anderson on lap 13 taking over second before reeling in Royle for the point just three laps later before the first of three cautions flew on lap 18 for a three car spin on the back straight. On the restart, Martin put five car lengths between himself and Anderson, with Royle caught on the bottom allowing the trio of Donny Reuvers, Jacob Goede and Steve Murgic to move into the top five before Elko's Scotty Marschall laid a line of oil from a blown engine onto an already slick racing surface at lap 28. Over the final 12 laps, Martin would wade through two more cautions and peddle his way to his first BUDWEISER Late Model win of 2003, with Reuvers, Murgic, Goede and Steve Schultz rounding out the top five.

In the MILLER LITE SPORTSMAN, Rosemount's Bob Barfknecht set the early pace in the HOT TAMALES/PAPA MURPHY'S 30 before Savage's Doug Brown charged by Duane Halvorson and then Barfknecht to take the lead on lap five, with Hastings' Mike Felixberger working around Barfknecht to second. The action stayed green until lap 14, when Halvorson and Hastings' Paul Neisius came together on the front straight after a hard fought battle for position, sending Neisius and a shower of sparks along the wall and Halvorson spinning wildly. After a lengthy cleanup, Brown put the field through their paces and despite a last lap charge by New Prague's Mike Skaja, held on by inches for his second feature win of 2003, with Felixberger, Josh Larsen and Jonathon Eilen rounding out the top five.

In the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars, Chaska's Dan Weber was after an early 33rd Wedding Anniversary  present to his parents, before Prior Lake's Brent Kane sent the tandem spinning on the front straight eight laps into the 25 lap feature. On the restart, Cottage Grove's Jerry Thomsen blew by Nerstrand's Kris Morelan for the lead, which he would claim until lap 20 when Lakeville's Mark Storlie carried the outside line momentum around Thomsen for the lead. Over the final five laps, Storlie would go untouched to the victory with Lakeville's Conrad Jorgenson, Oakdale's Jeff Choban, Thomsen and Morelan rounding out the top five.

Topping off the action were the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street Stocks and this feature more resembled a "survivor" format than anything else as six caution periods slowed, stalled and even stopped the action for numerous cleanups, tows and oil dry demonstrations! Once the dust and debris finally cleared, Lakeville's Scott King had the patience to work past Bob Clingingsmith for the lead, enroute to the win, with Red Wing's Josh Gernetz, Richfield's Tim Hollen and New Prague's Timm Moravec rounding out the top five. As a bonus to the hard fought victory, King was awarded a new drivers suit from APEX PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS for his efforts, ending an action packed night of NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES action.

Elko Speedway will kick off a busy June NASCAR DODGE WEEKLY SERIES schedule on Saturday June 7th as GOPHER STATE MORTGAGE presents the action, including a special appearance by the CRUISER division and a rare OUTHOUSE RACE, with all people with the initials of TP gaining FREE ADMISSION!
