Schneider Dodges Competition For Elko Win
By Jim Burns
Elko, MN
May 24, 2003--New Market's "Racin Jason" Schneider made a strong early charge to
overtake Lakeville's Darrin Giles, then rode the power of his COUNTRY JOE HOMES
DODGE Intrepid to victory in the 3M/U.S. ARMY 40 Saturday May 24th at Elko
Speedway. In other NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series action, Lakeville's Jake Ryan
topped the MILLER LITE Sportsman main, with Oakdale's Jeff Choban earning his
second win of the season in the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars, defending divisional
champion Scott King of Lakeville topped the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD Street
Stocks and Northfield's Mike Tuma was the 3M/US ARMY OF ONE in the
Legends.
In the BUDWEISER Late Models, Elko's Scott Marschall paced the
opening trio of laps before Darrin Giles (who was returning from an early
afternoon practice crash) and Jason Schneider worked the outside groove
beginning Marschall's slide out of the top ten. Only eight laps in to the 40 lap
main, Schneider proved his mount would run equally fast on the inside lane as he
overtook Giles for the lead. Once in front, Schneider was able to pull away from
the field for a dominant 8 car length victory, with Farmington's Adam Royle,
Lakeville's Brian Johnson, New Germany's Jacob Goede and Webster's Steve Schulz
rounding out the top five.
In the MILLER LITE Sportsman, for the third
straight week the Eilen and Sons/Twin City Featherlite Ultimate Challenge was
accepted as New Prague's Mike Skaja wanted to see how stout his TONY'S
APPLIANCE/KAUFMAN ROOFING Chevy was in pursuit of the bonus. Skaja as it turned
out wouldn't get the opportunity to cash in as Lakeville's Jake Ryan tracked
down Hastings' Mike Felixberger for the lead on the 20th circuit, pulling away
to the victory. Skaja did however have an impressive run coming from 16th only
to be edged by Hampton's Jonathon Eilen in the battle for third with Savage's
Doug Brown rounding out the top five.
In the COCA-COLA Thunder Cars,
Faribault's Matt Carlander took the lead of the 25 lapper only six laps in and
looked to be on his way to a dominant win. Two late race cautions would be his
undoing as Oakdale's Jeff Choban took advantage of the double file restarts and
some awesome "CANTERBURY PARK horsepower" to notch his second feature win of the
season topping the 3M/US ARMY 25, withLakeville's Conrad Jorgenson and Kevin
Lutz slipping by Carlander for second and third on the final charge, with Mark
Storlie rounding out the top five.
In the EXHAUST PROS OF NORTHFIELD
Street Stocks, defending divisional champion Scott King of Lakeville worked his
way from a 10th place starting position into the lead with only six laps to go
in the 20 lap affair. King's work wasn't finished as a 19th lap caution flew for
debris bunching up the 30 car field for a wild restart. King was able to hold
on to the lead, outdistancing Rosemount's Dan Johnson, Webster's Clint Grandal
Jr., Oakdale's Dan Meszaros and Prior Lake's Kerry Estes for the
win.
Topping off the 3M/US ARMY festivities were the Legends and with
three and four wide racing going on throughout the 20 lapper, it was a
handicapper's nightmare! In the end, Northfield's Mike Tuma drove his G & T
Trucking/Jerry's Yamaha/Countyline Aggregate mount to the win, with Dave Keays,
Lance Groth, Greg Gress and Kim Kraus rounding out the top five.
