Donlinger Makes It Two In A Row At DCS!!
by Bob Peine
Sunday, August, 17th, 2003; Kasson, MN.- It was yet another great night for
racing at the Dodge County Speedway on Sunday night. It was warm and sunny
again, and the track held up well, despite the heat. Also on hand tonight were
Quad 4's, with 7 riders in attendance. A five lap heat race was run, along
with a 7 lap feature. Jim Yearhart won the feature, followed by Dave Yearhart
and Paul Overocker.
The first of four features of the night was the WISSOTA Street Stock main
event. Josh Rowald and Andy Solum shared row one, and it didn't take long for
the yellow to fly. Greg Erickson got turned sideways coming off of turn two,
and it was Jason Gabrielson getting tagged with the caution and would have to
restart from the tail.
When racing resumed, Dan Gullikson moved up to second while Erickson followed,
and took over third. Gullikson looked to the inside of Rowald for the lead and
would soon have it. Erickson again followed the lead of Gullikson taking over
the second position.
Mike Loomis cracked the top five, and Shawn Wehlage was also on the move after
starting last on the grid. Wehlage was up to sixth, and Loomis advanced to
third, after starting 11th.
Gullikson would hold off all challengers and score his 20th feature win of the
season. Erickson, Loomis, Wehlage, and Jim Patzner rounded out the top five.
Next up were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Nolan Bachman and Chad Herman
would share row one, and it was Herman taking the early lead. The first
caution came whe Dave Bjorge jr. spun in turn three, collecting Jeff
Ringenberg. Ringenberg would be forced to drop from competition after sliding
in to Bjorge Jr. with nowhere to go.
When racing resumed, Jesse Frericks challenged Herman for the lead. Greg
Pfieffer was up to fourth, but the car to watch was that of Albert Wytaske.
After starting 11th, Wytaske was inside the top five in a handful of laps.
The race was red-flagged after 4 laps, due to the ambulance having to leave
the track. Racing resumed when another arrived.
Herman led, followed by Frericks, Bachman, Wytaske, and Pfieffer. Wytaske
immediately took over third when racing resumed and Frericks went to work on
Herman again. Frericks got by Herman to take over first, and Wytaske also got
by Herman to move in to second. Wytaske looked to the outside of Frericks, and
would make it work, taking over the top spot.
Wytaske, definitely no stranger to victory lane, racked up another win,
holding off Frericks. Herman crossed the stripe third followed by Pfieffer,
and Bachman rounding out the top five.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were up next. Justin Pogones started from the pole
with Dustin Nelson to his outside. Pogines grabbed the early lead followed by
Nelson and Bill Clemens. Nick Herrick battled with Mark Oltjenbruns for the
fourth position, and Herrick would come out on top in that one. Herrick then
looked to get by Clemens for third. Brad Bannitt started 10th on the field and
did not take long to crack the top five. Another car on the move, after
starting dead last, was Chris Klinger. Herrick took over third from Clemens,
and then immediately took over second, while Bannitt got by Clemens to take
third. Klinger was up to fifth, and still on the move. A lot of changing of
positions were taking place in the top five, until the cauion waved when
Nelson got spun on the backstretch. Kelly Anderson would be charged with the
caution and sent to the rear.
On the restart, it was Herrick, Bannitt, Justin Pogones, Klinger, and Nelson
rounding out the top five. When racing resumed, Klinger got by Pogones for the
third spot, and Herrick was able to hold off Bannitt for the win. Pogone and
Clemens rounded out the top five.
The fourth and final event of the night was the USRA Modified 25 lap main
event. Todd Klees and Leroy Scharkey shared row one, but it was Jay Ihrke
coming from row two to take the lead. Klees went to the inside and raced side
by side for a couple laps with Ihrke, but Ihrke held solid. Tim Donlinger
rapidly advanced to third, while Jim King took over fourth. Todd Scharkey and
Mike Sorenson went at it for fifth, in a battle that would go on for most of
the night.
Ihrke bobbled slightly in turn two,, and would drop back to third, and
Donlinger was there to capitalize. Donlinger took over the lead and would
never be challenged. Sorenson looked to the ouside of King for third, and
would soon take the position.
Todd Scharkey was still on the move, and up to fourth. Sorenson was starting
to pressure Klees for second, and Scharkey was keeping pace with
Sorenson.
Sorenson made the outside work to get around Klees for second, and Scharkey
also got by Klees to secure third. Donlinger was on cruise control out front,
but Sorenson and Scharkey were putting on the show as the laps wound down.
Side by side for most of the closing laps, Scharkey kept the pressure on and
would make the pass for second on the white flag lap. Donlinger scored the
victory for the second week in a row at the Dodge County Speedway, increasing
his point lead over Ron Schreiner. Donlinger and Schreiner were tied for the
point lead coming in to tonight, but a tough break in the heat race ended
Schriener's night. Todd Scharkey finished second followed by Sorenson, Klees,
and Denny Barwald.
