Klees Tops USRA Modifieds At DCS

by Bob Peine

Sunday, August, 3rd, 2003; Kasson, MN.- It was a pleasant evening in southeastern Minnesota at the Dodge County Speedway on Sunday night. Clear skies and cooler temperatures would make for another great night of racing.

First up, was the WISSOTA Street Stock main event. Dan Gullikson and Kris Hengel shared row one and it was Dan Gullikson getting the jump and the early lead. Greg Erickson took over second followed by Chuck Nerland in third. Jason Gabrielson challenged and took third from Nerland, while Jeff Brauer was up to fourth. Mike Loomis cracked the top five, dropping Nerland back to sixth. Loomis put some pressure on Brauer for fourth, but Brauer was able to hold him off.

Out front, it was all Dan Gullikson and he would hold on to pick up his 18th feature win of the season. Erickson crossed the stripe second followed by Gabrielson, Brauer and Loomis.

Next up were the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Albert Wytaske would start from the pole, leaving most to wonder who would finish second. Wytaske has been very impressive at the Dodge County Speedway this year, and tonight would be no exception. Wytaske took the lead at the start and would never face much of a challenge in a race that would be plagued by cautions. Jesse Frericks fell in to second with Chad Herman in third.

Jeff Ringenberg and Jim Arnold both worked their way in to the top five while Wytaske tried to build up a lead. But the numerous cautions kept the field bunched pretty closely together.

Wytaske found Victory Lane once again, followed by Frericks, Herman, Ringenberg, and Jim Arnold.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks were up next. After two separate caution incidents on the first lap, a single file restart was used. Dustin Nelson took the lead followed by Dave Solum and Kelly Anderson. Anderson wasted no time in taking second from Solum and going after Nelson.

The first caution came for Josh Martell spinning out in turn four. When racing resumed, the car on the move was Brandon Jensen. But the pace was slowed again when Bobby Swanson spun in turn four. Back under green, Jensen went to work on Bill Clemens for fifth. Jensen made the pass and then went after Solum and Klinger, passing both to move in to third.

Martell brought out the caution again, this time for a spin in turn two. On the restart, it was Nelson, Anderson, Jensen, Klinger, and Clemens rounding out the top five. Ryan Siegle had charged through the field from his 18th starting position and was battling with Clemens for fifth. Jensen was all over the Anderson for second and would make the pass coming off of turn four. Jensen tried to reel in Nelson but ran out of laps. Nelson held on for the win followed by Jensen, Anderson, Klinger, and Clemens.

The fourth and final event of the evening was the USRA Modified main event. Bruce Angst and Jim King would lead the field to the cone and it was Angst taking the early lead. The first caution came when Don Brightbill and Paul Hamernick were involved in an incident in turn two. Jay Ihrke was putting some heavy pressure on King for second. Tim Donlinger was up to sixth after starting 12th on the grid, and looked very fast through the middle groove. Todd Klees took over the third position form Ihrke and bad luck struck for Angst, with a breakdown while leading. The caution waved at the same time when Neil Eckhart and Jerry Young tangled in turn two. Eckhart was tagged with the caution and sent to the rear.

On the restart, it was King out front, followed by Klees, Ihrke, Donlinger, and Chad Behne rounding out the top five. The race up front got pretty intense after racing resumed. Ihrke, Klees, and Donlinger were close enough at times to throw a blanket over the three cars. Mike Sorenson cracked the top five and joined the battle for second with Klees, Ihrke, and Donlinger. They had all caught King and it turned in to a five car battle for the lead. King had looked very strong out front but after some incidental contact, got pushed to the inside and dropped from first to fifth, handing the lead to Ihrke. Klees would then get by Ihrke to take the lead, but the multi car fight for the lead continued. King lost some ground to the leaders, and another car that was rapidly coming to the front was Ron Schreiner. Klees continued to hold down the lead but Donlinger was looking to the outside, trying to find a way around. Sorenson and Ihrke contested the third position. Sorenson got by Donlinger to take second in the closing laps, but it did not last, as Donlinger shot back around on the outside. Klees held on to win a very heated contest and a spectacular race. Donlinger, Sorenson, Ihrke, and Schreiner rounded out the top five.
