Foss And Klinger Top Fendered Cars At The Creek
Spring Valley MN
By Bill Nelson

Another beautiful 70 degree day greeted another spectacular crowd and a good field of cars on this Saturday night in Southern Minnesota.  Event Sponsor Fastenal and Stone Machinery were on hand to hand out great gifts to the fans and show their product.

The track was smooth and very racy throughout the night of racing action as the track crew kept applying moisture throughout the night on the speedway.  The WISSOTA Street Stocks were the first feature of the night with Kevin Hager getting the jump on the field at the drop of the green.  Scott Olson followed him into second while last weeks winner Scot Nelson came from eighth to third on lap two.  Coming down the backstretch Nelson put the car up against the wall and shot into the lead going into three.  With four laps completed Tony Horsman worked into fourth with Dan Holland in fifth from his thirteenth starting spot.  Ernie Kramer pressured Holland for the spot for the next three laps with Derek Borchardt following around directly behind them.  With eleven to go Nelson was slowly pulling away from the field, Hager still sat in second while Kramer took over the fifth spot working around Holland.  Kramers top five run was shot lived as he slid into the infield loosing spots as he pulled back onto the track.  Borchardt took advantage of the mishap and moved under Holland for the fifth spot.  Five to go and second running Hager started to show smoke out his exhaust as he started to slow and two laps later pulled into the infield.  Upfront though it was all Nelson as he cruised to his second straight win of the season at Deer Creek and he has not lost in any of his qualifying heats either.  Olson, Horsman, Borchardt and Karl Hewitt Jr. rounded out the top five.

A three wide battle for the lead started off the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with Jimmie Arnold getting the better of Brandon Davis and Bob Bunne out of thurn four.  With three laps completed Brandon Davis and Kenny Wytaske were mixing it up for second.  Through the next two laps they swapped lines and positions on the track.  Craig Bentzin was in fourth with Bryan Hernandez rounding out the top five.  Behind the top five they were still two and three wide around the track.  Eleven to go and Arnold was still strong up front while Jerry Young, Joel Alberts and Greg Pfeifer Jr raced three wide for seventh.  Davis wanted that second spot again and took it away from Wytaske as Albert Wytaske worked into the top five mix.  Things got a little hairy with five to go as Bentzin and Jeff Brauer battled for position Jerry Young moved in to make it a three car battle.  The cars touched in turn four sending Brauer to the wall, Bentzin kept moving with body damage and Hernandez collected Brauer.  Hernandez got a hot water bath as his radiator let loose spraying hot fluid into the cockpit.  On the restart Chris Adams worked into the top five after coming out of a “B” main and starting 21st.  On the restart Arnold again held the lead as K. Wytaske and Davis rac side by side for second.  Behind them A. Wytaske and Adams raced for fourth.  At the line it was Arnold, K. Wytaske and Davis rounding out the top five.

Chris Klinger used the front two starting spot of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature to lead wire to wire in the twenty lap feature.  Chris Quast ran well in second with all of the tracing action behind them.  Early on Cole Queensland and Ed Sanders raced for the third spot.  Two laps in and Sanders moved into third.   Adam Stockhausen and Jason Gabrielson raced side by side for sixth.  With seven laps completed Queensland was still trying to get back around Sanders for third with Sanders up high and Queensland down low.  Ryan Siegle closed in on the third place battle.  Klinger continued to open up the gap pulling out to a full straightaway advantage.  Siegle and Queensland still battled until with four to go Siegle’s car starting smoking causing him to pull into the infield.  Jason Gabrielson then took on trying to move around Queensland for fourth and completed the pass with two to go after starting last on the field.  At the checkers it was Klinger, Quast and Sanders rounding out the top three.

The WISSOTA Late Models put on a horsepower display tonight in their twenty five lap feature.  Rookie driver Neil Eckhart took to the early lead followed by Paul Novotny and Doug Herrick and Barry Underdahl in a side by side battle for third.  As Herrick cleared into third Lance Matthees moved alongside of Underdahl for fourth as the first caution flew.  On the restart Brad Waits joined Herick and Matthees in a three wide race for third with Matthees coming out with the spot and quickly moving up to duel with Novotny for second.  Novotny kicked in the burners and then moved up with Eckhart as Jay Ihrke moved alongside of Matthees.  A caution with twenty to go set up another race as Novotny moved into the lead, Matthees into second and Brad Waits and Ihrke side by side for third.  Waits moved to the top of the track and flew into third, two laps later he took over the second spot then moved alongside of the leader in two and took over the top spot with Matthees working on Novotny now for second.  Another caution with fifteen to go set up the charge to the finish.  With Waits leading Ihrke, Foss and Underdahl went into three racing for second.  Ihrke got completely out of shape but saved the car from spinning out as Novotny and Foss now raced for second.  Ihrke and Underdahl raced for fifth behind Matthees.  Ten to go and Foss started working on the leader Waits and with eight to go took over the lead.  The top two checked out from the field with Matthees in third.  Novotny held on for fourth with Ihrke in fifth at the line.

On some of the message boards the modifieds have been called the re-startifieds with their skinny tires and high horsepower motors making them a handful to drive.  Tonight was one of those nights as no fewer than 6 starts were needed to get the racing action start.  Jeff Schluetter took the lead from the start once the action finally got underway.  Mike Sorensen quickly moved into second with Todd Scharkey in third.  With four laps finally completed Craig Shaw and Bob Timm battled for fourth.  Scharkey worked past Sorensen for second with Timm slowly starting to pressure him for third.  A caution with ten to go saw Schluetter continue to lead, Timm worked into third while Ryan Gustin, Jay Ihrke and Pat Grahm had a great race going just outside the top five behind Steve Wetzstein.  A caution with five to go set up the final dash to the finish.  Timm and Schluetter dueled it out up front with Timm taking the lead with three to go.  Schluetter held on for second ahead of Scharkey, Sorensen and Wetzstein.
