Nelson Clinches Track Championship Night
By Bill Nelson
August 26, 2006 - Spring Valley MN - With three inches of rain at the speedway
on Thursday night the crews went to work to bring in a raceable track all day
Friday and Saturday. With heavy overcast skies not conducive to track
prep the speedway held up relatively well with only a light blading at a short
intermission to help fix a couple areas that were peeling up during the heat
race action. The track was fast for the rest of the night with a lot of
three wide racing throughout the field.
A big thank you goes out to Mikes Hard Lemonade and Olympic Fire and
Protection for the second straight week of paying for all of the drivers
entries into the speedway. It was greatly appreciated by the drivers as
the car counts have shown over the past two weeks. Another fantastic
crowd and 144 cars were on hand for season championship night at Deer Creek
Speedway.
The first feature event of the night was the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA
Midwest Modifieds. Kenny Wytaske clinched the track championship going
into the night which was fortunate as an accident took him out of the feature
racing action. Mike Paulson led from the green as the field took out of
two in four wide formation down the back stretch. Paulson pushed up in
turn three on lap two and dropped back quickly as Bryan Hernandez and Jimmie
Arnold raced side by side for the lead. Directly on their bumpers were
Greg Pfeifer Jr. and Jerry Young who were battling for third. With four
completed Hernandez was now in control of the race while Young worked on
Arnold for second. A caution bunched the field back up with thirteen to
go. On the restart Hernandez, Young and Arnold ran the lap three wide
until a second caution brought up another restart. On the restart Albert
Wytaske moved below the second place battle and alongside of Hernandez for the
lead. By this time Bob Bunne was alongside of Young for third as Arnold
dropped back slightly. Anther caution with nine to go changed the
outlook of the race again. On the restart Hernandez took the high
groove, Wytaske middle and Young low on the speedway as looked to take over
the top spot. With six to go Young showed the power as he took slight
control of the lead. Joe Bune was now racing for second with Wytaske and
Hernandez while Bob Bunne was side by side with Arnold for fifth.
Another caution with four to go showed ended Wytaskes night as he lost a
wheel on the restart. Young held on for the win his second of the
season.
The Sunplace Tanning WISSOTA Super Stocks found the top six cars swapping
spots and positions on the track for the first two laps until fifth starting
Cory Mahder took over the lead on lap three. Ted Marrs was in second
with Cole Queensland and Jesse Redetzke racing for third and Steve Thomas, Dan
Gullikson side by side for fifth. A restart with sixteen to go saw
Mahder leading with Redetzke second. Gullikson and Queensland were side
by side for fourth.A final caution with eleven to go saw the majority of the
remaining passes made as the super stocks went into their final green flag
run. Gullikson got in behind Redetzke for the third position with Steve
Thomas and Ted Marrs working into the top five. Thomas and Marrs had a
good race for three laps as Marrs ran the top and Thomas around the
bottom. Mahder cruised home with the win.
Bobby Kilby led the SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Street Stocks while Cory Crapser,
David Stevens and Chuck Nerland all raced for second early on. Nerland fell
back into the grasp of Jeff Nelson and Jim Gustafson for fourth as Crapser and
Stevens kept their race going. Crapser gained control of second with
four completed while Nerland and Gustafson moved alongside of Stevens for
third. With eleven to go Crapser raced alongside of Kilby for first on
his way to the front while the two 31s continued to race side by side with
Gustafson finally gaining control over Nerland. Two laps late Kilby and
Crapser made contact coming out of turn four with Kilby being displayed the
black flag. The restart saw Crapser continue to lead while the rest of
the top five ran in side by side formation. Jeff Nelson worked into the
picture as he race Nerland for third as Gustafson tried to chase down the
leader. A final caution with three to go saw Tony Horsman turned in front of
the field and Darren Thomas t-boning him in the drivers door after running out
of racing room. A very hard hit and thankfully both drivers reported
that they are okay as of this writing. Crapser cruised home with the win
on the restart with Gustafson and Nelson rounding out the top three.
Jake Redetzke took the lead on the opening lap of the Kramer Motorsports
WISSOTA Late Model feature event. Chad Mahder and Kevin Keuhn ran side
by side for second. Barry Underdahl and Adam Hensel were side by side
for fourth. With three completed Mahder took over second and was putting
pressure on Redetzke for the lead. With four completed the two touched
sending Mahder spinning into the infield. Redetzke led on the restart
with Hensel now taking over the second spot. Lance Matthees, Underdahl and
Mark Teske were three wide for fourth behind Keuhn. Matthees worked into
the third spot with fourteen to go as another caution flew over the
speedway. Two laps into the restart and Doug Herrick moved alongside of
Matthees for third while Mark Teske tried to get the top of the track to come
in for him as he blasted alongside for a three car race. Mathees broke
bringing out the caution with eight to go. Redetzke was just too strong
up front with Hensel in second while Mahder was now working on Underdahl to
break back into the top five after restarting tail end early on in the
event. The last run saw some great racing between Herrick, Teske, Mahder
and Underdahl as Redetzke pulled away from Hensel for a straightaway win.
Tommy Myer had the field pretty much covered as he led from the start of the
Bigelow Homes USRA Modified event. Tim Donlinger quickly put pressure on
him and held close for the reminder of the race in second waiting for any
mistake. Early on the modifieds show some daring moved with some four
wide battles out of turn two. Tom Paulson ran beside of Myer and
Donlinger early in the race until he spun with twenty one to go. Steve
Arpin and Nate Wasmund had a dog fight going for third on the restart while
most of the rest of the field migrated to the top side of the speedway.
Steve Wetzstein hung around the fifth position for most of the event while
Mark Noble worked up into the top five late in the feature after starting
eleventh on the field. With five to go Noble and Arpin had a great race
going for third swapping spots back and forth until Arpin lost the handle on
his machine ending his run.
