Kilby Takes First Street Feature At The Creek
By Bill Nelson

August 19, 2006 - Spring Valley MN - The track crew has been busy this past week at Deer Creek Speedway applying some new clay racing surface onto the speedway.  Approximately 100 yards of material was added on Tuesday and Wednesday of this past week.  With an all day rain on Thursday the track was worked in and provided some good racing action on Saturday night, despite cloudy skies all day on Friday and only partly clearing on Saturday afternoon.  Other than a couple rough spots the track was in good racing condition and with some extra traveling drivers the fans were treated to some great racing action.

The SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Street Stocks took to the track first for their feature racing action.  Erik Kanz and Fred Prudoehl exited turn two side by side for the lead at the start while a four wide battle for the third spot raged behind them.  Bobby Kilby quickly left the four car battle and moved past Kanz to take over the second spot on lap two while Kanz raced with Danny Hanson and Jim Gustafson for the fourth spot behind Chuck Nerland and Prudoehl.  A caution with four completed bunched the field back up.  Nerland used the restart to move past Prudoehl and started to put pressure on Kilby up front.  With ten to go Nerland was still pressuring Kilby up front while Gustafson and Hanson battled for third.  Gustafson was making the bottom of the track really work tonight and moved into third with eight to go.  With seven to go Gustafson got by Nerland by a nose at the line for second and set out after Kilby who had pulled away slightly over the last few laps.  Danny Hanson moved into third with three to go.  On the next lap Gustafson was about even with Kilby down the back chute.  At the white flag Gustafson had the lead by a nose, but Kilby kept it matted down hard through one and two and gained a half car out of two.  Kilby kept that half car length lead the rest of the way to the checkers to hold on for the win over point leader Gustafson.

Harlan Morehart took the lead on the opening lap of the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and held that until a caution on lap two as the field was battling hard for positions.  On the restart Morehart got pressured by Bob Bunne and Bryan Hernandez as the three ran down the back straight three wide for the lead.  Bunne got credited with leading the next lap while Hernandez now raced for second with Albert Wytaske.  Wytaske took control of second while the field continued to dice it up hard two and three wide around the track.  With four completed Wytaske moved past Hernandez to take control of the field.  Hernandez now started to get pressure from Jerry Young and Kenny Wytaske as they worked forward through the field.    Craig Bentzin was also moving now and sat in second after patiently sitting behind Albert on his way to the front.  Eleven to go and Bentzin now worked on Albert for the lead while Young and Hernandez continued racing for third.  Eight to go and Bentzin now led with Albert on his tail as the battle for third continued.  Five to go and Bentzin was slowly pulling away from the field and Hernandez took control of third.  Bentzin cruised home for the win followed by Wytaske, Hernandez and Young with Jimmie Arnold working past Kenny Wytaske for fifth late in the race.

Justin Sass sported a new look car tonight as he lead early in the SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Super Stock feature event.  With a black car in place of the traditional Sass white of 2006 he led while Dave Haberman, Cory Mahder and Jared Boumeester ran three wide for third behind Cole Queensland.  Queensland got past Sass for the lead while Mahder disposed of the other cars and started working on Sass for second.  A restart after two completed saw a big wreck in turn four on the restart ending a few cars night as Lucas Peterson got pounded in every corner of the car.  The restart saw Queensland lead with Haberman working on Mahder and Dustin Nelson trying to get past Sass for fourth.  Steve Thomas had also worked into the sixth spot and after watching the Nelson/Sass battle for one lap moved into the three wide battle for fourth.  Thomas cleared into fourth while Mahder moved past Queensland for the lead. Thomas was flying and quickly moved into third on the bottom of the speedway.  Thirteen to go and Thomas moved alongside of Queensland for the second position and looked to gain ground on Mahder up front.  Thomas had a quick line on the bottom while Mahder was about two car widths off the bottom of the speedway with both drivers turning almost identical laps.  Mahder was quicker in one and two and Thomas in three and four as they ran in close formation around the track.  The lead duo continued this for the remaining ten laps of the race while many three and four car battles continued around the speedway to the checkers.

Nick Herrick and Jerry Bloom paced the field to the green flag in the Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Models with Jay Ihrke, Barry Underdahl and Adam Hensel racing three wide for third behind them out of two.  Herrick took control early on with Underdahl moving past Bloom to take control of second as a caution flew with two laps completed.  On the restart Hensel moved past Herrick for the lead as Lance Matthees worked into the fourth position.  Herrick now had his hands full of Underdahl who was trying to get back into the second position.  As the field settled into a long green flag run the drivers found the quick way around the track minimizing any ruts encountered around the track which saw very minimal passing the rest of the feature race.  Hensel cruised on to win by a straight away win over Herrick who looked very strong in his new Masterbilt by Mars car in second.

With the USMTS series being cancelled at a nearby track many of the traveling stars of the series showed up to battle with the local USRA modifieds as they get ready for the upcoming Labor Day Dual.  A total of 39 USRA modifieds checked into the back gate for racing action on the night.  The modifieds had a tough time tonight with a complete restart after a spin in turn one.  On the restart outside front row sitter Mark Noble lost the handle of his machine in turn two causing a major pileup and ending the night for some strong runners.  When the green finally waved and a lap was completed Tommy Myer led the field with Steve Arpin and Kelly Shryock moving up to battle for the lead on lap two.  Behind them Jay Ihrke, Tim Donlinger and Neil Eckhart were three wide for fourth.  The lead pack stayed three wide for the next three laps until Arpin dropped back slightly with Donlinger taking over the fourth spot.  Myer and Shryock continued the battle for the lead with Shryock gaining control as another caution flew.  oN the restart Shryock led with Myer, Arpin and fifteenth starting Jason Krohn racing for second.  Myer kept contol of the spot until another restart with seventeen to go.  On the restart Myer and Krohn touched with Myer ending up with a flat and ending his night.  Krohn followed Shryock around on the restart with Arpin and Jay Ihrke side by side for third while Todd Scharkey and Mike Sorensen raced for fifth.  Another caution with thirteen to go caught the eye as Brian Shaw who started twenty second on the field had quickly worked to the front and was in the top five.  With nine to go Shaw worked on Scharkey for fourth.  Ryan Ruter also moved past Scharkey to take over fifth.  With three to go Shaw moved past Arpin into third while Krohn continued to follow Shryock around the speedway to take home second.  Shryock held on for the win.

Next racing action will be Saturday night with all 5 classes of cars in action.

Tickets are on sale for all action at the speedway with the Labor Day Dual coming up on the 2nd of September with the World Dirt Racing League and the United States Modified Touring Series in action at the speedway.  Also  tickets are available for the Valley Featherlite PRCA Rodeo on the 9th and 10th of September as well as tickets for the eighth annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree on the 20th through the 23rd of September.
