Myers And Smith Take Night #2 Of Heartland Nationals
By Bill Nelson

July 29 - Spring Valley MN - A sweltering day greeted the drivers and fans at Deer Creek Speedway for night #2 of the World of Outlaws Heartland Nationals.

The Sunplace Tanning WISSOTA Late Models were up first for their 25 lap $750 to win feature event.  A four car pileup in turn one on the start took out the winner from night one along with a couple other strong runners.  Jason Gabrielson took command from the drop of the green flag on the restart with Curt Myers quickly moving into the second position.  A caution with two down bunched up the field again.  Gabrielson again was quick on the restart with Myers and Steve Thomas in the third spot  Myers quickly moved alongside of Gabrielson on the next lap but was only able to get his nose alongside for the next four laps.  With twenty to go Myers slipped up allowing Gabrielson to get back out to a three car lead.  Rodney Dregney was working on getting past Thomas while Dave Mass was working on cracking the top five when another caution flew with seventeen to go.  Gabrielson continued to lead with Myers working to his inside again.  Two laps later Myers completed the pass with Mass starting to pressure Gabrielson.  Thirteen to go and Gabrielson, Thomas and Mass where three wide for position.  Another strong weekly runner Chris Groth now was working on getting into the top five.  Ten to go and the three wide race for second continued with Mass eventually taking the spot.  Gabrielson held on for the third spot followed by Thomas and Groth.  Up front Myers continued to cruise away from the field taking home the win.

Steve Francis led the first lap of the 50 lap $10,000 to win Heartland Nationals night #2.  Darrell Lanigan and Billy Moyer were racing hard for fifth early on.  Brian Birkhofer and Brady Smith were in third and fourth early on as Clint Smith had quickly moved into the second spot behind Francis.  Francis, Smith and Birkhofer went three wide into one on lap nine with Smith coming out of two with the lead.  Birkhofer quickly slowed on the next lap bringing out the caution.  On the restart Smith led while Shane Clanton, Brady Smith and Francis were three wide for second.  Ninth starting Chub Frank was the car to watch for the next few laps as he had dropped back slightly and now found a high side groove and quickly flew around and into the top 5.  Frank started to pressure Lanigan for fourth with thirteen down.  Nineteen down and Clint Smith continued to pull away from the field while Jimmy Mars got into a good rhythm and started to slowly make his way to the front around the bottom of the speedway.  Lots of good battles for position through the field kept most of the fans attention as Clint Smith continued to slowly pull away from the field up front.  Mars kept rolling around the bottom picking off Lanigan for the fourth spot with ten to go.  Clint Smith built up a full straight away lead before the checkers flew on night number two with Francis solidly in second, Brady Smith came home third while Mars kept his advantage over Lanigan for fourth.
