Kromschroeder And Lanigan Top Night #1 Of Heartland Nationals
By Bill Nelson
July 28 - Spring Valley MN - With sweltering and high humidity the heat index
in Southern Minnesota reached over 100 degrees for night #1 of the World of
Outlaws Heartland Nationals Track prep can be tricky in these types of
conditions but a super fast racing surface was found for the traveling
drivers.
Brady Smith started off a promising weekend with his qualifying run of 14.27
seconds around the 3/8 mile oval setting a new track record in the
process. The racetrack was in perfect condition for the heat races which
led to some high speed racing action.
The first feature of the night was the $500 to win Sun Place Tanning WISSOTA
Super Stock Feature. The Super Stocks were mixing it up hard right from
the start with a four wide battle for first and a four wide battle in mid
pack. A caution flew on lap two to slow down the field. ON the
restart Kurt Kromschroeder and Dustin Nelson were side by side for the lead
while the rest of the pack was all over the racetrack trying to work their way
to the front. Nelson took the lead with twenty one to go with
Kromschroeder in second. Chris Groth brought out the next caution as he
slowed on the speedway with twenty to go. Ted Marrs battled Dave
Haberman for the third spot on the restart while most of the field ran double
wide. Marrs took the third spot with seventeen to go. Another
caution with sixteen to go saw the leader head to the pit area with
overheating problems handing the point to Kromschroeder. J.B. Storz
started to pressure Marrs for the second position at this tiem as another
caution flew with eleven to go. Marrs would also eventually break down
ending his run as Kromschroeder had his hands full with Stortz for the last
five circuits. Kromschroeder held on for his first ever feature win at
the speedway.
Speed TV Crews were on hand to tape the inaugural World Of Outlaws Heartland
Nationals on this night. A very good field of 33 Late Models were on
hand. Perfect track conditions set up a green white checker race to the
finish that was nothing short of incredible. Shane Clanton and Darrel
Lanigan ran side by side at the drop of the green while the rest of the field
ran three and four wide around the track for the first couple laps. Lanigan
pulled out front while Rick Eckert moved into second and started reeling in
the leader. With eight down most of the field started to migrate to the
bottom of the speedway. Clanton and Dale McDowell had the best race
going for third while traffic was going to become an issue real quickly.
Eckert quickly started to gain ground on Lanigan as he worked traffic. Twenty
down and McDowell moved into third and quickly gained on the front duo.
Eckert pulled alongside as Lanigan ran into two slower cars battling for
position. Twenty six down and the battle up front was still side by side
but now McDowell had moved up to their bumpers. Eckert gained the top
spot on the next lap but on the next lap Eckert and Lanigan got together
allowing McDowell to take over the lead. Eckert started to slow slightly
after the contact and no longer was a factor in the outcome of the event. With
thirty down McDowell was pulling away from the field but started to smoke
heavily out of the left front. Lanigan sits in second, Birkhofer in third,
Clanton fourth and Josh Richard in fifth with ten to go. The smoking
McDowell would continue to lead for seven more laps until he pulled into the
infield handing the lead back over to Lanigan. The last seven laps saw
great racing action behind the lead. Clanton, Birkhofer, Smith and
Richards were in a very tight pack. At the finish it was Lanigan with
the win, Clanton second, Clint Smith third from his eighteenth starting
spot. Fourth was Birkhofer and Richards fifth.
