Matthees Back On Top At Deer Creek
By Bill Nelson
July 22, 2006 - Spring Valley MN - With perfect afternoon weather for racing
action the crowd and cars came to the race track only to be threatened early
on by Mother Nature. A quick shower at 4:00 slowed down the prep crew as
they tried to get the final roll-in of the track. With a slight delay
the racing action got under way with the heat race action. About 1 hour
into the racing action the clouds began to drizzle on the speedway but with
the help of the drivers the racing stayed going on the track until a heavier
rain hit a couple races later. Again after some work by the prep crew
the cars were called onto the speedway and thanks to their help the racing
again resumed after loosing about 1 hour total time to the rain during the
night.
The Sunplace Tanning WISSOTA Street Stocks exited turn two in three wide
formation at the start of their feature event. Chuck Nerland held the
early advantage with Ernie Kramer in second. Danny Hanson and Jim
Gustafson were side by side during the next lap for third as was the rest of
the field as everyone raced for their preferred line. Fifteen to go saw
Hanson and Kramer side by side for second with Scott Olson moving alongside of
Gustafson for fourth. Hanson took over the second spot with Gustafson
following him through on the low side for third. A caution with eleven
to go bunched the field back up with Nerland again taking control of the
field. Gustafson used the restart to move past Hanson for second with
Olson following him into third. The top five stayed in close formation
running the high side of the speedway through the remainder of the race with
Olson working low on Gustafson a few times but not enough to advance the
position. Nerland came home with his first feature win of the
season followed by Gustafson and Olson.
After taking their first heat wins ever at the Deer Creek Speedway the Siskow
brothers of Sam and Tim paced the field for the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA
Midwest Modifieds. Sam took the point early on as the raced out of two
and onto the back stretch. Joe Bunne looked strong early on and moved
low under Siskow for the lead in three and four with Albert Wytaske following
through into second. Two laps later and Sam was hanging in there and
moved back beside Wytaske as they dueled for second. Turns one and two
saw the high side the way around early while every groove worked in three and
four. A restart with twelve to go saw a change up front with Bunne
leading them into one and Wytaske leading them out of two. Jeff Brauer
and Ron Houdek had the best battle going on during the middle part of the race
as the two dueled for the fourth spot during a spell of caution flags.
Kenny Wytaske took advantage of the cautions and moved past Bunne for the
second spot. Albert came home with the win followed by Kenny and Bunne.
Lucas Peterson had the lead exiting turn two of the Sunplace Tanning WISSOTA
Super Stock feature event. Kevin Hager and Ryan Siegle quickly joined
him up front as the trio raced three wide around the track for the lead.
Hager gained control briefly but Siegle powered by on the top side to take
control of the field on the next lap. Behind them Chris Groth, Dustin
Nelson and Ted Marrs were racing for the fourth spot with seventeen to
go. Six laps completed and Groth moved into the third spot around
Peterson. Two laps later Groth moved into second and while exiting two
on the next lap blew by Siegle on the low side and into the lead. Nelson
and Peterson will still racing side by side with Dave Haberman running
directly behind them. Nelson eventually gained control of the spot and
moved up to race with Siegle for third while Groth and Hager moved out up
front. Siegle started to slow with five laps remaining as Nelson took
over third. Peterson held strong in fourth while Haberman sat in
fifth. Groth continued to pull away taking home the win.
The Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Models had another great night of racing
action with Keith Foss taking the early lead. Lance Matthees had his new
Rocket chassis figured out tonight and moved quickly into second and started
chasing down the leader. Three down and the leaders were side by side
for the lead while Adam Hensel jumped to the high line and blasted around the
third and fourth place cars to take over the third spot. Mark Teske was
also moving early on into the top five. Foss continued to lead with
Hensel moving past Matthees for second while Doug Herrick raced with Matthees
for third. Mike Prochnow now started to work on Teske for the fifth spot
and moved by him on the low side. Sixteen to go and Hensel and Foss were side
by side for the lead with Matthees directly behind Foss.
Hensel pushed up over the cushion in one allowing Matthees into second.
Matthees quickly pulled alongside of Foss and soon took over the point while
Hensel regained control on the top side and moved into second. With ten
to go Matthees was cruising out to a half straight advantage while Hensel and
Foss kept their battle going. Teske had moved back into fifth and was
racing Herrick for the fourth position at this time. A restart with five
to go saw Hensel take a chance on getting under Matthees but he got sideways
and was straightened out by Foss as the field charged by. The yellow
flew again to give Foss his spot back and Hensel quickly went into the pits
with damage. Matthees led the rest of the way to the checkers with Foss
in second and Teske in third.
Mike Sorensen led the first lap of the Bigelow Homes USRA Modified
feature. Mike Spaulding and Brad Waits ran side by side for second as
most of the field races two and three wide. Twenty three to go and Waits
started to pressure Sorensen for the top spot. Two laps later Waits took
over the point as Todd Scharkey moved into the third spot behind
Sorensen. Behind him Spaulding, Nate Wasmund and Bob Timm battled for
fourth. A caution with seventeen to go saw Waits out front with Scharkey
getting into the second spot and Timm into third. Another caution with
thirteen to go bunched the field back up. Waits continued to lead while
Bob Timm moved past Scharkey for second. Steve Arpin had moved up from
his twentieth starting spot to race Sorensen and Spaulding for fourth.
The Scharkey and Timm battle continued through the next five laps with Timm
running high and Scharkey low as the two ran side by side until Scharkey used
lapped traffic to move soundly back into second. Waits came home with
his first feature win of the season at the speedway with Scharkey second and
Timm third. Spaulding and Arpin rounded out the top five.
Racing action resumes at the speedway next week with the Heartland Nationals
featuring the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the WISSOTA Super Stocks
racing both Friday and Saturday night.
