Wytaske Wins Tight Midwest Modified Feature
By Bill Nelson

July 15 - Spring Valley MN - A good field of cars and a nice crowd for a 90+ degree day in Southern Minnesota saw great track conditions for the hot windy and humid day. Gillund Enterprises with their Justice Brothers products was on hand along with Admiral Merchants trucking to great the fans and racers at the speedway.

Craig Bentzin jumped out to the early lead in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified race while the field circuited the speedway in two and three wide formation early on in the race.  Albert and Kenny Wytaske were racing three wide with Ben Anderson for the second  spot as Bentzin worked to find the quick way around the speedway.  Albert took control of the second spot while Anderson found his hands full with Jimmie Arnold on lap three.  With twelve to go in the eighteen lap feature event the field still had great battles going from sixth on back but the Wytaske’s still were racing hard for the second spot up front. Arnold held onto the fourth spot as he watched the Wytaske duel.  Ten to go and Bentzin was still cruising up front.  With three more laps completed the caution flag flew as Bryan Hernandez slowed quickly on the front stretch.  Thee restart saw the same formation with Bentzin out front and the Wytaske’s racing for second.  Kenny took control of the spot with Arnold following him through to third.  Kenny moved up to race with Bentzin for the lead with three to go while Arnold followed closely on his bumper.  Kenny slipped up in three allowing Arnold and Bentzin to move back alongside.  Bentzin then pushed up in two with two left allowing Wytaske and Arnold back by.  Kenny cruised from their to the checkers followed by Arnold, Bentzin and Albert and Anderson across for fourth in a photo finish.

In the Sunplace Tanning WISSOTA Street Stocks Ryan Goergen took advantage of the pole position and took the early lead with Scot Nelson moving quickly into third from his fifth starting spot.  A quick caution on the second lap saw a restart with four cars battling for the fifth spot exiting turn two.  Brad Dennis got the worst of the attempted racing action as his car rolled and the pirouetted on top of the backstretch wall coming down hard on the wall roof first.  Quick acting rescue personnel were on hand to evaluate the situation.  At the time of this writing the update is good with only bruising found during the observation at the hospital, we wish Bradley a quick recovery and hope to see him behind the wheel again soon.  On the restart Nelson charged into the lead with Crapser quickly working up through the field after going tail end on the first restart.  Ten to go and Nelson was still up front with Chuck Nerland having a great run in second, Danny Hanson in third and Crapser in fourth.  Jim Gustafson was in fifth as the top five slowly pulled away from the field.  Six to go and Crapser pulled alongside of Hanson for third, Hanson quickly slowed and into the infield with a flat tire moving Shawn Reed into fourth.  With four to go Crapser brought out the caution as a flat tire ended his run.  Gustafson moved into second on the restart with Nerland and Reed all following him home behind Nelson who took the win.

Chris Groth led every lap of the Sunplace Tanning WISSOTA Super Stock race jumping out from his second starting spot on the first lap. Positions four through twelve were three and four wide in the pack as Jason Gabrielson moved into the second position and hanging tight with Groth up front.  Dustin Nelson quickly moved into third as he looked to be charging his way to the front in a hurry.  Bobby Swanson and Chris Klinger hooked together briefly as they raced for fourth sliding them back through the field as the cars unhooked and got back up to speed. Fourteen to go and Tyler Rubin moved into fourth with a very fast car as Nelson started gaining on Gabrielson for second.  Two laps later Gabrielson pushed up in four allowing Nelson to move into second.  Dave Haberman was also on a march as he moved into the top five.  A caution with seven to go bunched the field back up.  On the restart seventeenth starting Cory Mahder moved up to race with Rubin for the fourth spot. Another caution flew and on the restart Gabrielson and Nelson raced for second behind Groth.  Gabrielson took the spot with three to go and Mahder started to work on Nelson.  A final caution with three to go saw a single file restart and looked to finish the race in that order until turn four got Gabrielson again allowing Nelson and Mahder to move past as he dropped back to fourth.  Groth won the race virtually unchallenged.

Ben Mattick paced the field for the Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Model event with front row started Troy Brand.  Mattick jumped into the lead from the drop of the green while Mike Prochnow quickly moved past Brand for second.  Brand quickly fell victim to Doug Herrick next with Jake Redetzke sitting in fifth.  Mattick kept his car straight and tight throughout most of the feature and quickly started to pull away from the field.  Chad Mahder moved into fifth and then started to pressure Redetzke for the fourth spot.  Eighteen to go and Mattick had pulled out to a good ten car lead while Redetzke and Mahder ran side by side for fourth in a great battle.  The fourth place battle continued for three more laps as they ran down Herrick in the third spot while up front Prochnow was finally gaining some ground on Mattick.  Lapped traffic started to come into play with twelve laps completed as Mattick smoothly worked through the slower cars.  Working the lapped traffic though allowed Prochnow to make up some ground and move within a couple lengths of the leader.  Mattick led the green flag race all the way to the checkers as he took home his first win of the season.  Prochnow was second with Mahder, Redetzke and Adam Hensel rounding out the top five.

The Bigelow Homes USRA Modifieds provided another exciting night of racing action as they took to the track.  Jay Poidinger led the pack into turn one while Tim Donlinger took over the lead exiting turn two. Going into three Steve Arpin challenged Donlinger for the lead and completed the pass in turns one and two the next lap.  Mike Sorensen was quickly moving forward as he moved into third with Ryan Ruter in fouth. Twenty to go found Poidinger, Mike Spaulding and Doug Hillson in a great race for fifth while Sorensen and Donlinger raced for second.  A caution flew and on the restart Spaulding flew between Ruter and Donlinger for the third spot as Sorensen set out after Arpin.  Most of the field at this time was dancing the high line around the tops side of the speedway.  Another caution with fifteen to go saw Arpin continue to lead up front.  Spaulding and Sorensen raced for second as Nate Wasmund moved up to race with Ruter for fourth.   Arpin was flying around the high side with Sorensen in second.  Ruter was now racing Spaulding for third with Bob Timm and Wasmund behind them.  Over the following ten circuits Arpin stayed out front with Sorensen running just slightly below him but not able to move past.  The third through sixth place battles continued to provide the entertainment for the crowd as they ran in tight formation changing positions with every lap.  At the checkers it was Arpin taking home the win, Sorensen second with Ruter, Spaulding and Timm rounding out the top five in a great race to end the evening.

Racing action resumes next Saturday with a 6:00 start time.
