Arpin & Sorensen Slide To Crowds Approval
By Bill Nelson
July 8, 2006 - Spring Valley Mn - A perfect night for racing greeted the crowd
with bright sunny and warm skies early in the night while cooling down for
feature action while the racing action heated up on the track.
Bernatello’s Pizza and Firestone were the nightly sponsors of the racing
action at the Southern Minnesota Speedplant.
Drivers and fans were treated to out of car introductions during the opening
ceremony for the point leaders heading into the midseason point championship
night. Current point leaders heading into the night were Jim Gustafson
in the WISSOTA Street Stocks. Kenny Wytaske in the WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds, Dustin Nelson in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Mike Sorensen in the
USRA Modifieds and Adam Hensel in the WISSOTA Late Model division.
Tony Horsman took the early lead in the SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Street Stock
feature event with Cory Crapser quickly moving into the third position.
Point Leader Jim Gustafson and Chuck Nerland were side by side for 5th.
Fourteen laps to go and Crapser was pushing Ron Rucker hard for the second
spot. Crapser cleared into the second spot two laps later then moved
into the lead as Gustafson quickly followed into the second spot. Dan
Holland was having a phenomenal run and moved up from his twelfth starting
spot to third with ten to go. Danny Hanson and Scott Olson raced the
remainder of the race in a good close battle for fourth as Crapser slowly
pulled away from the field to take the win.
Darin Toot and Craig Bentzin led the field into turn one for the start of the
Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature side by side.
Bentzin came out with the lead while Johnny Magnum briefly moved into the
third position. A caution on lap three claimed a few cars on the restart
as Jerry Young, Albert Wytaske, Travis Krause and a couple others left the
track with tore up sheet metal and wrecked cars. On the restart Jimmy
Arnold and Ben Anderson had a great side by side battle going with Arnold
eventually gaining the advantage. Bentzin continued out front during
another caution period with Toot still riding on his bumper looking to get
past. The top three cars were in a class by themselves and slowly pulled
away from the field as they ran the highside of the speedway to the
checkers. Bentzin took home his first win of the season with Toot and
Arnold following through for the top three.
SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Super Stocks pulled onto the track for their feature
event with Cory Mahder getting the early lead. The rest of the pack ran
two and three wide for the first few circuits as everyone jockeyed for
position. Jason Gabrielson settled into the second spot early on with
Chris Quast in third. Quast had a good run on Gabrielson on lap three
and while moving below him touched the left rear tire of Gabrielson cutting
down his tire and ending Gabrielson’s night. With fifteen to go Dustin
Nelson was working on Quast for second after starting twelfth on the
grid. Nelson made the pass while Ted Marrs and Chris Groth flew around
the high side quickly making up ground on Nelson. Mahder was on a rail
slowly pulling away from the field with ten to go. Groth now settled
into the fifth position behind Marrs with other great battles still going on
through the back half of the field. Groth and Marrs eventually worked around
Quast for the third and fourth positions while Mahder cruised to a half
straight away win.
Nick Kramer led lap number one of the Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Model
feature race. Paul Novotny looked to his inside early on while Lance
Matthees dropped low and passed the two for the lead at the completion of lap
two. Track conditions were perfect for the high speed late models as top
and bottom grooves were being heavily used by all drivers. Four laps
completed and Adam Hensel had moved from twelfth to third. Twenty to go
found Hensel in the second spot as Matthees slowly had opened up a half
straight lead over the pack. A caution on lap six bunched the field back
up with Matthees leading on the restart. Jerry Bloom and Paul Novotny
had a great race going for third as they raced side by side around the
track. Two laps later Hensel got around Matthees and took over the
lead. Jay Ihrke had worked into the top five and moved past Novotny to
pressure Bloom for third. Mark Teske and Barry Underdahl raced side by
side for the middle part of the race as they tried to work towards the front
of the pack. Ten to go and Hensel had pulled out to a straight lead
while Matthees pulled out to a half straight lead over Ihrke in third.
Hensel cruised to his third win of the season
The Bigelow Homes USRA Modifieds had a barn burner tonight. Mike
Sorensen jumped into the lead at the start with Steve Arpin and Bobby Sorensen
working each other for second. Arpin took control of the second spot
while the rest of the field raced two and three wide on a perfect modified
race track. Nate Wasmund and Brad Waits ran side by side for the fourth
spot with twenty one to go. Arpin was making the high side come to life
while Sorensen ran the bottom of the speedway. The position changes inside the
top ten were fast and furious during the first twelve laps of the race.
With thirteen to go lapped traffic really came into play as Sorensen got
slowed by lapped cars Arpin was able to gain ground and pulled up on the
bumper of Sorensen’s. Eleven to go they crossed the line side by side
and then the fun began. Arpin led with ten to go, nine to go and side by
side at the line. On the next lap Sorensen moved backed into the lead,
as they entered turn one Arpin dove under and slid up in front of Sorensen but
the crafty veteran lifted, turned left and drove back around Arpin for the
lead. Arpin led with seven to go as traffic slowed down the slide
jobs. A caution with three to go set up a green, white and checker dash.
Arpin led from there to the checkers while Sorensen and Bob Timm battled for
the second spot. The duo crossed the line in a virtual dead heat with Sorensen
taking the second spot.
