Teske And Donlinger Make Late Race Passes For WINS
By Bill Nelson
July 1st - Spring Valley Mn - A warm and humid night of weather greeted a
great crowd on this independence weekend with 118 cars checking into the back
gate on Cornwell Tools night at the speedway. KGH Construction, John
Schraeder Trucking, Brien DeYoung and Fastenal were also on hand providing
additional money and prizes to the local racers.
Up first for their feature event was the SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Street
Stocks with fifteen cars on hand to take the first green flag. Tony
Horsman took off to the early lead while Michael Conrad took a 360 spin on the
first lap but kept the power on in his mount and rejoined the field as
everyone missed his spinning antics. Scott Olson quickly moved up from
his seventh starting spot into second on the second lap of the race.
Danny Hanson had his hands full with Ernie Kramer as they battled for the
third spot around the speedway. Top point runners Jim Gustafson and Cory
Crapser were side by side for fifth. With thirteen to go Hanson gained
control of third as Gustafson and Crapser continued to battle for
position. Ten to go and Olson was shadowing every move that Horsman made
around the speedway as he was glued to his rear bumper. For many circuits
Olson would get a run out of two and show the nose to Horsman but Tony was not
going to be denied and kept holding of the hard charging Olson. With two
to go Olson dropped even lower on the speedway and moved into a side by side
race with Horsman as Hanson quickly gained ground on the lead duo.
Coming into three on the last lap Olson made the move stick on the bottom and
exited turn four with the lead and the win.
Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds pulled onto the track for their
feature event with Bob Bunne taking the early lead. Sean Hemker quickly
moved into second. Two laps into the race Hemker found the bottom was
the quicker way around and moved into the lead. As Hemker found the
bottom so did a bunch of others as everyone started to work lower on the track
searching for more traction. Bryan Hernandez and Travis Krause had the
best race of the event going as they battled for the fifth spot directly
behind Jeff Brauer and Harlan Morehart in third. A caution with eight to
go bunched up the field. Kenny Wytaske used the restart to power into
the fourth spot as he moved up a groove from the rest of the field. Six to go
and Krause was starting to work on Bunne for the second spot. A caution
with four to go set up a sprint to the inish. On the restart Hemker
continued to cruise up front while Krause and Bunne continued to run side by
side. The duo raced the final four laps basically in a dead heat with
Bunne getting the second spot and Krause the third position as they followed
Hemker across the line with his first feature win of the season at the
speedway.
Yellow flags seemed to rule the night for the SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Super
Stocks as they battled to get their race finished. Mike Stearns made the long
pull over from the Dakotas and took the early lead after being challenged by
Chris Klinger on the opening lap. Chad Zastrow took control of third
after the third completed lap. Further back in the field Cole Queensland
and Dustin Nelson were testing the high line as the two of them were flying
around the rim moving up through the field. Queenslands run ended after
collecting the backstretch wall bringing out the first caution. After
problems on the first restart Stearns got the field under control on the
second attempt as he paced the field. Klinger quickly moved alongside on the
next circuit as he slowly worked into the lead position. A large pack of
cars were running two and three wide for fourth through tenth. Another
caution with twelve to go bunched up the field again. After two failed
restarts on this yellow the third one made it a lap before another spin slowed
the field and resulted in dropping five laps from the distance of the
event. Stearns put pressure on Klinger for the remaining four laps while
Ryan Sigle, Chris Groth and Tyler Rubin had a great race going for the fourth
position and crossed the checkered finish in a three wide formation behind
Klinger and Stearns. Klinger took home his first win of the season.
Troy Brand led through one and two in the Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late
Models but exiting turn four Dennis Hillson powered by into the lead.
With the Late Models running two and three wide through the field Hillson was
able to slowly gain distance on the rest of the pack. Paul Novotny
looked great early on in the third position as everyone searched the speedway
for their fastest line. Twenty to go and Hillson still kept distancing
himself from the field as a caution flew. On the restart Novotny, Brand and
Kevin Keuhn raced for second with Adam Hensel sitting just outside the top
five. Brand gained control of second as Hensel cracked the top five and
Mark Teske was obviously flying up through the field from his eighteenth
starting spot. Twelve to go and Hillson again pulled away from the field
but Hensel was now working Brand for the second spot. A caution with
nine to go bunched the field back up, and set up an exciting finish.
Hensel powered by on the low side of the speedway to take the lead with six to
go as Hillson slipped in turn four collecting Novotny, Keuhn, Matthees and
Brand in a wreck. This final restart was exactly what Teske needed as he
hounded Hensel the last couple laps. Hensel got a little high in two
with two to go allowing Teske to show the fender. Out of two on the
final lap Hensel again pushed up a little high as Teske and him exited turn
four side by side. Teske gained the top spot just as they raced past the
checker flag with the crowd standing on their feet.
Bigelow Homes USRA Modifieds finished out the nights racing action. Nate
Wasmund took the early lead with Mike Sorensen, Steve Wetzstein and Brad Waits
in hot pursuit. Two laps into it and Sorensen took over the top
spot. Tyler Clark ran in fifth with Tim Donlinger racing in Les
Duellmans car and Bob Timm following him. With twenty to go Sorensen
was slowly pulling away from the field as Donlinger worked on Clark for
fifth. By sixteen to go the track was slick from top to bottom with most
of the field working the momentum line up against the wall. A caution
with fourteen to go found Wetzstein move quickly into second, Donlinger
and Wasmund battled for third with Donlinger finally gaining control of the
spot as Dripps worked into fifth. Twelve to go and Wetzstein grazes the
wall in two allowing Donlinger into second. On a restart with nine to go
Donlinger and Sorensen ran side by side up front while Dripps and Wetzstein
battled for third. Donlinger gained control shortly as Dripps and
Wetzstein touch causing Dripps to spin down the front stretch and luckily
nobody piled into him. On the restart Dripps took over second while Bob
Timm worked into the top five along with Doug Hillson. Donlinger cruised on
for the win with the borrowed car with Dripps and Sorensen rounding out the
top three.
