Hensel Dominates WISSOTA Late Model Action At The Creek
By Bill Nelson
June 17th - Spring Valley MN - 108 cars a nice crowd were on hand for Images
night at the speedway. Adams, Rizzi and Sween were also on hand as a nightly
sponsor as the racing action in Southern Minnesota took to the track after a
week off due to wet weather. Rain continued to pound the ground during
the week but with a little hard work the track crew provided a great race
track with exciting action during the nights racing.
The Sun Place Tanning WISSOTA Street Stocks were up first for their eighteen
lap feature event. Fred Prudoehl used his front row starting spot to
jump into the early lead with Nathan Finley in hot pursuit. They ran side by
side on the second lap until Finley gained control of the spot. Scott
Olson followed Finley through to the second spot as Jim Gustafson and Danny
Hanson had a great battle going for fourth. Fifteen to go and Gustafson
took the spot as Cory Crapser moved up to race with Hanson for fifth.
Upfront Finley continued to lead with Olson hot on his tail as the sped around
the topside of the speedway. The only caution flew as the early leader
Prudoehl started to lay down water on the speedway and pulled into the
infield. On the restart Finley charged back into the lead with Gustafson
quickly pulling into second and putting pressure on the leader. With
nine to go Finley pushed up in two giving Gustafson the opening that he was
looking for as he took over the lead. Gustafson cruised home for the win
followed by Finley and Olson at the line.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds took to the track next for
their 18 lap event. After an early complete restart Sean Hemker took
advantage of the pole position and pulled out from with heavy pressure by
Tyler Clark and Joe Bunne. Bunne and Hemker swapped the lead multiple
times over the next five laps as they ran side by side with Tom Paulson and
Tyler Clark behind them racing for third. Ben Anderson, Greg Pfiefer
Jr., Albert Wytaske, Kenny Wytaske, Chuck Arpin, Dan Wheeler and Bryan
Hernandez were in a huge pack all racing for position. With the race up
front exciting this pack really had the crowd going as they ran two, three and
four wide as they all tried to get towards the front. It was close
racing in that pack but all did a great job holding their lines. A
restart with twelve to go found Hemker leading again but with Ron Houdek and
Tyler Clark applying the pressure to him and each other. With most of
the field running the middle or lower grooves on the track Anderson, Albert
and Kenny Wytaske took to the high line. They kept working the groove in
and helped the eventual winner. With seven to go Dan Wheeler moved to
the top of the track and into the top five. With six to go Houdek, Clark
and Wheeler were three wide for third. Wheeler was flying at this time
and with four to go moved into the lead around the top side of Hemker. A
caution then bunched the field back up for the last three laps. Wheeler
took off on the restart with Hemker close behind. Clark, Hernandez and
Kenny Wytaske now raced three wide for the fourth spot. A final caution
brought out the final two lap dash for the finish. Hemker and Wheeler
put on a show as they ran side by side for most of the remaining dash. Each
led a lap as they swapped spots around the track. Wheeler had the
momentum on the last lap taking home the win as they exited turn four in close
racing formation with Hemker taking second.
Next up to entertain the fans were the Sun Place Tanning WISSOTA Super
Stocks. Ryan Siegle took the early lead and looked to have a great run
as he cruised up front. The middle of the field found all of the
excitement early on as they raced around the speedway in a tight pack. Cole
Queensland and Bobby Swanson had a great race for third with Jared Boumeester
following them around the speedway waiting for his opening. With fifteen to go
Dustin Nelson moved up to race with Boumeester as Siegle started to get
pressure from Tom McEldowney in his best run of the season. The top two
slowly started to pull away from the field as Queensland settled into
third. Fourteen to go and Nelson moved under Queensland as the dueled
for the third spot for two laps until Nelson took over the spot. With
nine to go Siegle was back out to a five car length lead. Nelson started
to work on McEldowney for second. Two laps later Queensland raced with
McEldwoney as Nelson sailed into second. Swanson joined the battle for third
as Nelson gained ground on Siegle. Coming to the white Nelson got a great run
and pulled alongside of Siegle. The two turned the final lap side by
side and at the line it was Nelson by about 2 feet over Siegle. In the
past two races Nelson has one two races by less than 3 feet. Siegle took
second and McEldowney rounded out the top three in his best finish of his
rookie season.
The Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Models came out for their twenty five lap
feature event with Jerry Bloom taking the early lead over Roger Herrick.
The Herrick family then put on a show for the fans as Roger and his sons Nick
and Doug raced three wide for the second spot. Roger and Doug had the
better runs and kept side by side for second as Bloom continued to run strong
up front using the middle of the speedway. Doug eventually took the spot
as Nick found the top of the track to his liking and moved past Roger for
third. Then both Herricks took out after Bloom putting him in the middle
of a Herrick sandwhich. Twenty to go and twelfth starting Adam Hensel
was showing his strength as he moved up to race with Doug for the third
spot. Nick moved alongside of Bloom for the lead and was the leader as a
caution flew with seventeen to go. On the restart Hensel blasted into the lead
and checked out from the field. Doug Herrick moved into second
again as Ron Schreiner moved alongside of Nick for the third spot.
With seven to go Hensel was already working lapped traffic. Behind him
Doug, Schreiner, Nick and Mark Teske had good runs going and gave the crowd
something to watch as they battled for positions. Hensel cruised home to
a half lap lead at the checkers with Doug and Schreiner following him home for
second and third.
The final race of the night was the Bigelow Homes USRA Modifieds which had six
different winners in six weeks of racing at the speedway. It looked to
be an all Dain Schultz night as he pulled out to the early lead from the pole
position. Early on Schultz looked to be the strongest car on the track
and was easily pulling out to a good lead on the straights. Brad Waits
and Mike Sorensen gave Schultz a little pressure early then resumed their own
race for second. Waits took control as the first caution flew.
Steve Arpin joined the battle for second on the restart as the three swapped
positions on the track as they ran three wide around the speedway. Bob
Timm and Nate Wasmund were also side by side for fifth as a caution flew with
seventeen to go. Waits moved alongside of Schultz on the restart as Wasmund
and Sorensen raced for third and Timm and Arpin ran side by side for
fifth. Schultz again held the advantage as these drivers used every line
on the speedway. Waits took second as Wasmund and Sorensen raced for
third. Eleven to go and it was Waits and Sorensen for second with Timm in
fourth looking for his opening. Another caution with ten to go changed
the complexion of the remainder of the race. Schultz got the lead but
Sorensen charged to his bottom. As Sorensen grabbed the lead Timm also
went by Schultz on the bottom. Schultz wasnt giving up quickly and
moved back alongside of Timm for second as Wasmund and Waits raced for
fourth. Five to go and Timm finally completed his pass of Schultz for
second and even moved under the leader into the lead. With Timm running
around the bottom and Sorensen blasting around the high line it was an
exciting last five lap shootout. Timm led for a little then Sorensen
would get back past. With two to go they were side by side at the line.
On the white flag lap Timm led into one but exiting two Sorensen got back by
as they came out of four Sorensen pulled out to a slight lead as they crossed
the checkers.
