Nelson Outraces Queensland To Finish By A Nose
By Bill Nelson
June 3rd - Spring Valley MN - 111 cars checked into the back gate at Deer
Creek Speedway for Olmstead National Bank and Shaw Custom Homes night.
After two special events in a row a very good crowd attended the races on a
very pleasant night in Southern Minnesota.
The first feature race of the night was the Sun Place Tanning WISSOTA Street
Stocks with thirteen cars making the call for the green flag. Ron Rucker took
the lead of the feature event coming out of two with Danny Hanson following
closely behind him. With two laps completed in the eighteen lap feature
event Hanson pulled alongside of Rucker at the line and slowly pulled out to
the lead. Cory Crapser and Dan Holland raced side by side for the third
position. Fourteen to go and Crapser had cleared into third and was
putting pressure on Rucker for the second spot. Jim Gustafson moved up
behind Crapser on lap six as the two of them worked past Rucker for second and
third. Up front it was all Hanson as he cruised alone with a Ύ straight
away lead. Ten to go and Crapser and Gustafson were locked in battle for
position. The ran side by side down the back straight and made contact
in the middle of three and four sending both cars pitside with flat
tires. On the restart Chuck Nerland used his starting position to
outpower Rucker into the second position. The top three ran this way to
the checkers while Ernie Kramer and Joe Sattre rounded out the top five with
their best finishes of the season.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds took to the track next and
had a rough time on the track. After two failed double file starts the
field finally took the green racing into corner one in single file
fashion. Albert Wytaske moved quickly into the lead with Jerry Young and
Bob Bunne racing side by side for the third spot. Young soon took the
spot from Bunne and Chris Adams who started ninth moved into the fourth
spot. Fourteen to go and the field started to spreadout into two racing
groups. Wytaske made some serious gains on the field as he pulled out
front. Ten to go and the best race on the track was between Young, Adams
and a hard charging Kenny Wytaske. These three swapped positions and
lines on the track numerous times over the next three laps until Wytaske moved
into the second position with six to go. While Wytaske moved into second
Ron Houdek made his presence known and joined Young and Adams along with Bryan
Hernandez as they raced for third. Their battle kept going until the finish
with Albert Wytaske taking home the win, Kenny in second, Houdek, Young and
Adams rounded out the top five.
Jason Gabrielson led the Sun Place Tanning WISSOTA Super Stock feature event
early on with Tyler Rubin and Lucas Peterson racing for second. Positions five
through ten had the eyes of the crowd as they ran two, three and four wide
around the track. With fifteen to go Gabrielson was out front by a half
straight lead. Cole Queensland, Kevin Hager and Ricky Kobs were locking
horns for the fourth position. Behind them Dan Gullikson was in fifth
trying to hold off a hard charging pack of cars in sixth through ninth.
A caution with eleven to go bunched the field back up. On the restart
Gabrielson took the lead while Rubin and Peterson resumed their race for
second. Kobs, Gullikson and Queensland were side by side at the line on
the next lap as they raced for fourth. Rubin finally took control of the
second spot as another caution flew with eight remaining. On the restart
Queensland moved below Rubin to take over the second spot and race Gabrielson
for the lead. Behind the lead duo Rubin was trying to hold of Dustin
Nelson and Gullikson for the third spot. Seven to go and Nelson moved
into third and coming out of four moved alongside of Queensland for
second. Gullikson soon took control of fourth. Five to go and
Nelson led the pack at the line. At the next corner Queensland moved
alongside of Nelson for the lead as they ran side by side for the rest of the
feature. Gabrielson slid back to fourth. Two to go and Gullikson
pulled under Nelson as Queensland had a slight half car advantage. The
top three cars were tight as they crossed the line at the white flag. As
the checkers flew Nelson and Queensland crossed the line in a dead heat.
After review from the scorers and flagman Nelson was given the nod and the win
by a foot. Nelson took the trophy that was presented to the feature winner and
drew one kids number from the ticket box to receive the trophy.
The Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Models pulled onto the track for their
feature event with Paul Novotny and Tony Bloom pacing the field. Novotny took
he lead early on with Doug Herrick close behind in the second spot. Mike
Prochnow moved into the third spot. On lap two of the twenty five lap
event Herrick moved alongside of Novotny for the lead. Herrick took the
spot as Prochnow worked on Novotny for second. Two laps later Prochnow held
the runner up position. Nineteen circuits remained and Prochnow was
working on Herrick up front as the track had two great racing grooves with one
around the bottom and one up against the wall. Four laps later Prochnow
took the lead and slowly started to pull away from the field. Barry
Underdahl, Herrick and Novotny now were racing for the runner up spot.
Underdahl took the spot as Mark Teske, Adam Hensel joined Novotny and Herrick
for the third spot. Ten to go and Teske gained control of the third spot
and quickly set sail for Underdahl. Teske took the second spot on lap
twenty and slowly gained ground on Prochnow. Two to go and they were
side be side for the lead. Teske took the lead and the win on the final lap
scoring his second feature win of the season.
Bigelow Homes USRA modfieds took to the track with Brad Waits and Mark Noble
leading the field to the green. Early on the modifieds raced three and
four wide for the top spots. Waits gained control of the field while
Todd Scharkey moved into second. Nate Wasmund and Steve Arpin raced for
fourth in a great side by side battle early on behind Mike Sorensen in
third. A restart with seventeen to go saw Scharkey moved along side of
Waits for the lead followed by Sorensen in third. With eleven to go the field
started to run nose to tail along the wall as they were flying around the top
side of the track. Eight to go and lapped traffic allowed Sorensen and
Arpin to get around Waits for second and third. Tim Donlinger and Tommy
Myer had a great race going for the fifth spot swapping lines and
positions. A green white checker dash greeted the drivers at the end of
the race but everyone held their spots as Scharkey came home with a win in his
first visit to the speedway in 2006. Sorensen stayed in second with
Arpin, Waits and Myer rounding out the top five.
Racing action resumes on John Hardys Bar B Que night next Saturday with a
