5 New Winners Highlight Deer Creek's Night 3
by Bill Nelson

Spring Valley Mn - April 22, 2006 -- 125 cars were on hand during Fastenal night at the races.  The track was slightly rough during the heat races after all of the rain the speedway received this week.  The crew bladed it down before the features and put a light mist down to smooth out what was left and the track was lightning fast the rest of the night for the features.  The street stock feature was again an incredible battle with any of 5 cars able to win the race.  There was lots of two and three wide racing in all classes all night but especially the street stocks.  Racing action started at five o’clock and ended shortly before 9:30 with the small delay in track prep before the features.

The Fastenal crew was busy in the hospitality area with a tire changing game for those who wanted to try their hand at a NASCAR tire change. They also brought along the #18 Bobby Hamilton Jr. NASCAR Craftsman Truck for display that had a crowd gathered around it all night.  Chris Ausrud and Scott Hilgemann each won a pair of tickets for the Milwaukee Mile Craftsman Truck race that was given away by Fastenal.  Cindy Seabright also received a pair of tickets to an upcoming Martina McBride concert at the Midwest Wireless Center in Makato MN courtesy of Midwest Wireless.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks have put on the best races of the season so far to date and tonight was no exception as the battles were great and frequent throughout the 18 lap race.  Jamie Johnson started from the outside pole position and quickly moved into the lead followed by Ryan Goergen.  Cory Crapser and Cory Rosen were tied for points coming into the nights racing action.  Crapser looked strong early on moving up from his tenth starting spot into the top five in the first two laps.  With sixteen to go Shaun Wehlage and Allen Gessell Jr. made a sandwhich out of Goergen for second.  Gessell Jr. took the spot with Wehlage working into third.  Jim Gustafson worked into the top five with eleven to go and started to put pressure on Crapser for fourth as Johnson cruised out front by himself.  Gustafson took the spot as Gessell Jr. and Wehlage ran side by side for second in a great battle swapping positions multiple times during the next five laps.  Gustafson joined in making it a three wide race with eight to go as Rosen moved past Crapser for fifth.  Johnson cruised out to a full straightaway lead over Gustafson as he worked into second.  Wehlage broke with four to go as Rosen moved into third.  Gessell Jr., Crapser and Danny Hanson then had a race for 4th on the last lap with Hanson getting a flat tire and dropping back. Johnson cruised home with the caution free feature win.

Ben Anderson jumped into the early lead in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature race with Bryan Hernandez following through closely in second. With two and three wide battles raging on through the field Hernandez and Anderson put on an entertaining display of driving for the fans as they raced side by side swapping grooves on the racetrack early on. Greg Pfeifer Jr. and Chris Adams had the best seat in the house watching the duo up front as they slowly closed in on them.  Fourteen to go and Anderson was now into a comfortable lead as Pfeifer Jr. started to work on Hernandez for position.  Craig Bentzin and Sean Hemker had a great race going for fifth as Anderson kept increasing his lead up front.  The yellow flew with nine to go bunching the field back up.  Bentzin and Adams worked each other over on the restart with Bentzin gaining the advantage.  Bentzin then set sight on Pfeifer Jr. and with three to go moved into the third spot as Anderson pulled out to a half straightaway lead over second place finishing Hernandez.

Jason Gabrielson looked to have things working well in his WISSOTA Super Stock tonight pulling out to an early lead with Harlan Morehart in second.  Defending track champion Dustin Nelson ran in third and started to pressure Morehart quickly.  Chris Groth was also flying as he moved up from his ninth starting spot into the fourth spot on lap four. Nelson moved into second as the Super Stocks were tearing around the speedway in two and three wide formations.  Morehart than started to slide back through the field as Groth moved past and then Bobby Swanson moved into fourth.  Fourteen to go and Nelson and Groth were hotfooting it to the front as they gained ground on Gabrielson.  Twelve to go and the top three were nose to tail, on the nest lap Groth dove low past Nelson and Gabrielson as Nelson also moved past Gabrielson into second. A caution flew with eleven to go with Groth leading.  Dave Haberman then moved up into third as Gabrielson slowed dramatically on the back stretch bringing out another caution.  Dave Haberman and Kurt Kromschroeder then locked up for third as Nelson started to work on Groth up front.   The front runners swapped the lead three times with seven to go until Nelson took the lead.  Groth’s  motor started to sound a little sour late as Nelson pulled away for his first win of the season.  Groth held on for second as Haberman and Kromschroder finished third and fourth with Swanson rounding out the top five.

The USRA modifieds were wicked fast on the tacky racing surface with Tim Donlinger leading early.  A couple quick cautions settled the field down slightly with Tommy Myer in second and Brad Waits looking strong in third.  Two laps down and Myer moved into the lead with Mike Sorensen, Bob Timm and Steve Arpin dicing it up for fourth.  A restart with twenty one to go saw Myer jump back out into the lead, Waits up into second and Arpin into fourth.  A caution came out for debri’s as the field slowed Arpin and Soresen got locked together ending Arpin’s night.  With fifteen to go Myer had worked back into a full straight lead with lots of great racing behind his dominating performance.  Donlinger and Waits touched on a restart with Waits dropping back a few spots and Sorensen working past Donlinger into second.  Nine to go and Donlinger had his hands full with Corey Dripps and Bob Timm as they ran three wide for position.  Timm moved into third with Donlinger and Dripps left to determine the outcome for fourth and fifth.   Timm got a flat on the last lap falling back through the field with Nate Wasmund having a good run to round out the top five behind Donlinger and Dripps with Myer and Sorensen taking home the top spots.

Another nice field of WISSOTA Late Models took the green flag with Doug Herrick getting the early lead.  Mike Prochnow moved into the lead on the second lap as Herrick pushed up in a corner.  Keith Foss then started to work Herrick for second as Teske moved up from ninth to fourth.  Jay Ihrke was strong early also as he followed Teske forward and into the top five early from his eleventh starting spot.  Eighteen to go and Lance Matthees and Adam Hensel moved forward as they moved around Ihrke for the spots.  On a restart with fourteen to go Jeff Matejka barrel rolled his Late Model down the back straight with Matt Madsen, Jerry Bloom and Kevin Keuhn all involved.  All of the drivers were able to walk away from the incident.

On the restart Teske powered by the front two on the bottom side of the speedway to take the lead.  Foss and Prochnow raced for second as Hensel worked just behind Foss on his way to the front.  Six to go and Hensel had worked past Foss and now was busy with Prochnow.  On the next lap Hensel moved into second and quickly started to track down Teske.  Teske held on up front and the defending track champion took home his first feature win of the season in his first start.
