Fall Festival Wraps Up Deer Creek Regular Season
Spring Valley, MN (Oct. 1)
By: Todd Narveson

It was an absolutely picture perfect evening for racing at the Deer Creek Speedway. Tonight’s event was sponsored by Featherlite Trailers of Cresco, IA and Valley Featherlite of Rochester.

A season high 163 race cars signed into the pits to do battle for one final regular night of racing. The fans got their money’s worth tonight with the twenty-nine race card.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were first up for their 15-lap main event. Steve Eischens and Cory Crapser brought the field in for the green flag. A yellow on the initial start would bring a complete restart.

Crapser would take the early lead as Eischens had his hand full with Wayne Dean and Mark Froehlich. Eischens was right on Crapser for the lead on lap four and slid to the inside of the leader on lap eight. Crapser would fend off Eischens challenges.

Then Dean slid to the low side of Eischens on lap eleven and squeezed to the second spot in turn three. Froehlich now look to get by Eischens for third as Danny Hanson took fifth.

Just as Hanson got into the top five, his right rear wheel left his car ending his run and bringing out the yellow on lap twelve. That tightened up the field and set up a three lap dash to the finish.

On the restart things became interesting up front. Crapser led, but Dean was knocking at the door. Dean slid to the low goove and made a move for the lead. Crapser held on running the top groove.

The white flag flew with Crapser and Dean door to door for the lead. They battled the entire last lap side by side. With the checkered flag in the air the raced almost dead even to the stripe.

Dean edged past literally by inches to claim the win with Crapser second. Eischens would finish third as Jamie Johnson raced from tenth to fourth with Froehlich in the top five.

Johnny Magnum led the WISSOTA Midiwest Modified feature early on with Sam Siskow right with him. Dean Hoffman was running third until he spun in turn two on lap two bringing out the yellow.

As the race resumed, Magnum led and Siskow was under attack from Dan Wheeler. They tried to go four wide for second coming out of turn four and it did not work. Siskow got turned sideways and nailed the frontstretch wall. The rest of the field did a great job not piling into him.

On the restart, more mayhem broke out behind the leader Magnum. Wheeler and Kenny Wytaske tangled in turn two and both cars broke sending the field scrambling again and the yellow flag flew again.

Magnum was still leading with Heather Rayman now sceond. When the racing resumed, Tom Paulson quickly challenged Rayman for second and took the position on lap three. Bryan Hernandez also zoomed past into third and Dustin Steinbrink was now fourth.

On lap five, Magnum was now feeling pressure from Paulson and Hernandez. Paulson went to the top side on lap six to challenge for the lead. Paulson spun in turn three on lap eight and the yellow flew for the spin.

Magnum continued to lead, but was being challenged by Hernandez and Steinbrink. Magnum got out of shape on lap ten allowing Hernandez and Steinbrink by.

Now Hernandez and Steinbrink were side by side for the lead. Steinbrink ran the low groove and Hernandez went up top. Steinbrink nabbed the lead on lap ten and the pace slowed for another yellow on lap eleven.

Steinbrink led the field, but the driver on the move was Ben Anderson. Anderson started twelfth and had now raced his way to third in the waning laps of the race. Anderson was closing in on Hernandez as the white flag flew.

Steinbrink led the final lap to win his first ever midwest modified feature. Anderson got by a slowing Hernandez for second. Bob Bunne and Eric Condit also slipped by Hernandez who ended up fifth.

Kevin Hager and Dave Haberman led the WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag for their 20-lap feature event. They went side by side for the lead as Ted Marrs and Kevin Ayotte did the same for third.

Hager would nab the lead on lap two and Marrs raced Haberman for second. Mike Loomis was on fourth and close behind the lead pack. Hager’s car broke loose in turn two on lap three and Haberman was again alongside for the lead.

Haberman led lap five as he and Hager were still tooth and nail up front. Loomis and Marrs now battled for third as Mike Ellis cracked the top five. Ferlin Miller was on the charge and on lap eight got by Ellis for fifth.

The race up front was great as Hager and Haberman continued their side by side battle. Haberman had a slight advantage until lap twelve when Hager slipped back to the front.

Haberman was not giving up though as again he pulled even with Hager and they raced door to door on lap thirteen and fourteen. Loomis had broken free of Marrs and closed in on the lead duo.

Hager secured the lead on lap fifteen as Loomis now tried to get by Haberman. Ellis’ good run would end on lap sixteen as his car went up in a big plume of smoke and stalled in turn four causing a caution.

It took two tries to get things going again as two minor spins kept things under yellow. The next restart saw Loomis bolt to the inside of Hager in turn one and take the lead in turn two.

However, another spin brought out the yellow before the lap was complete. That was a big break for Hager as he regained the top spot for the restart.

Hager went on for the win, his first of the season. It was a big win for Hager as he and his wife Tracy were celebrating their eleven wedding anniversary this weekend.

Loomis would finish second and Marrs would get by Haberman for third. However, Marrs was light on the scales and disqualified putting Haberman in third. Ferlin Miller and Mike Weber would round out the top five.

The USRA Modified feature was a caution plagued affair. Shawn Peterson led early on as Neil Eckhart and Tim Donlinger raced for second. Caution flags would be the rule as the race had a hard time getting any flow.

Eckhart would get to second on lap five and then chase down Peterson up front. Peterson spun to the infield on lap seven and the field blasted on by. Eckhart led with Donlinger and Todd Scharkey in pursuit.

Eckhart would endure a couple of cautions while up front, but held off the pack for a convincing win. Donlinger was second with Scharkey third. Bruce Angst and Jesse Frericks would finish out the top five.

It was a heartfelt goodbye for the Classic Dwarf Cars tonight. This was the final night of racing at Deer Creek for this division as they will not return in 2006. Their largest field of the season with twenty cars on hand brought things to an end.

Troy Hudson made the haul up from Ankeny, IA and put a whopping on the field tonight. Hudson led from the green until the checkered as he won in dominating fashion.

The races only slowdown was for a flip by another Iowa invader as Mike Morrill got upside down in turn four. He was uninjured and drove his car to the pit area.

Roger Torgerson would finish second with Fred Schimmels in third. Cliff Barber was fourth and Rick Utley was in the top five.

The final race of the night was the 20-lap WISSOTA Late Model feature. On the start, Jeff Matejka got turned sideways in turn two and hit the wall. Several cars got into the mess and Troy Brand sustained race ending damages.

Deer Creek’s 2005 point champion Mark Teske took the lead from row one and left the field to battle for second. Luke Roffers held that spot and was challenged briefly by Mike Prochnow.

Prochnow’s run ended early as during a caution, his left rear tire deflated and ended his potential good run.

Teske pretty much checked out from there as he dominated the field for the win. Roffers was second in his first ever run at the speedway. Jerry Bloom had an excellent run in third as did Steve Yaggy in fourth. Paul Novotny rounded out the top five.

That concluded the regular season at the Deer Creek Speedway. A special thank you from the entire staff goes out to all the fans, sponsors, drivers and crews that made 2005 a great season at Deer Creek.

The annual awards banquet will be held on Saturday, November 19 at Grumpy’s Restaurant and Lounge in Grand Meadow. Tickets are $20 and available by calling 1-877-DCS-RACE or go to www.deercreekspeedway.com for more information.
