Kiehne Takes Last Point Feature For Classic Dwarf Cars
By Bill Nelson

August 27 - Spring Valley MN - 137 cars checked in for the six classes of racing action during Watts Cooking night.  All of the classic dwarf car drivers came out onto the track for the carrying of the flags before the racing action and at the completion of their feature ran a polish victory lap waving to the crowd thanking them for their support.  It was the final points race for the Classic Dwarf cars as the class is not returning for the 2006 racing season.  I would like to personally thank the Dwarf cars for some great racing action this season and during the past season.  They usually put on a very good show with minimal cautions  The racing action in all 6 classes was outstanding as Deer Creek Speedway brought the season to a close for points in all 6 classes.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks closed out the season at the speedway first with another outstanding feature event.  Throughout the season the Street Stocks have put on some of the best racing night in and night out.  Mark Zvorak took the early lead with many three and four wide battles throughout the feature.    With two laps completed Tony Horsman sat in second with Chuck Nerland in third.  Danny Hanson and Steve Eischens worked into the top six early after starting further back in the field.  A restart with twelve to go bunched up the field.  The restart made for some exciting racing as the top 6 were all racing for the top spot.  Nerland, Jamie Johnson, Horsman and Zvorak exited turn four on the first time around in a four side battle for the lead.  The field then settled out slightly as Zvorak continued to lead.  Nine to go and the dual up front heated up again with Nerland, Zvorak and Johnson coming to the line three wide.  Zvorak was running up top and the momentum kept him in the lead.  Johnson pressure Zvorak hard for the final six circuits of the field getting alongside a few times but Zvorak had the top working perfectly to take home the win.  Shaun Wehlage took home the track championship by a slim 7 point margin.

Greg Pfeifer Jr. led the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds after the initial start failed.  Pfeifer got a little loose on the second lap allowing Darin Toot and Bryan Hernandez to move past while Kenny Wytaske moved up to race him for third.  Ten to go and Toot was still in the lead with Hernandez close behind in second and Jason Cummins and Wytaske in a hard race for third.  Toot continued to hold onto the lead during two additional late race cautions.  Jeff Brauer and Tom Paulson were side by side for the fifth position during the final Green, White, Checker dash to the finish.  Cummins took home the track championship with him.

Troy Brand took the point early in the WISSOTA Super Stock feature as Dave Haberman and Gary Wiersgalla set sail after him.  Dustin Nelson worked into fourth on the third lap running the bottom of the speedway as most of the rest of the field ran up higher on the banking.  Sixteen to go Kevin Hager moved into fifth while a big pack of cars ran directly behind him.  A restart with fourteen to go found Nelson moving into second and moved beside Brand on the next lap.  Another restart found Brand still running up front with Matt Durnen moving up to challenge Hager.  During a restart on lap ten Nelson finally wrestled the lead away from Brand as Hager moved under Haberman for third.  The last four laps saw a great battle for second with Hager, Brand, Haberman and Durnen all grouped together.  Nelson came home with the win and also took home the track championship for the 2005 season.

Mike Sorensen turned the wheel behind the Lance Matthees machine and held the lead early on with first time visitor of the season Brent Laursen in second.  Steve Yaggy and Barry Underdahl raced side by side early.  The third place battle closed up on Laursen with fifteen to go. Jim Carlson took over the third position as Sorensen started to pull away from the field slightly.  Many good battles were found in the middle of the field as Underdahl started to work towards the front. With seven to go Underdahl moved past Carlson into the second spot. With Sorensen on the bottom of the speedway and Underdahl up top the racing action was really starting to pick up as Underdahl tried to pick Sorensen off the point.  With four to go Underdahl completed the pass which took him to his first ever Late Model feature win and the speedway.  Mark Teske worked into the top five late and with his finishing position took home the 2005 track title.

Mike Gaines led the Classic Dwarf car Feature early with Rick Utley in second and Brian Kiehne in third.  Kiehne slowly worked into the second position as the rest of the field ran two by two around the speedway.  With nine to go the top two pulled away from the field by a good length but a restart with seven to go changed the outlook of the race.  Todd Kiehne and Jeff Jech battled hard for third while Brian Kiehne moved into the lead.  Gaines pressured Kiehne immediately as the two made a contact over the next couple laps.  The final caution flew for the leaders as Kiehne spun.  Gaines was sent to the rear while the Jech’s (Drew and Jeff) tried to catch Kiehne up front.  Kiehne came home with the win and the 2005 Track Championship.

A good field of modifieds were on hand for the $1,000 to win feature event as Olympic Fire and Protection and Jerry Ingvalson upped the top pay for the USRA Modifieds.  Ryan Ruter took the lead first, Tommy Myer, Matt Aarsvold were side by side for second.  With twenty one to go Ruter slowed handing the lead to Myer.  Mike Sorensen moved under Myer for the lead on the restart.  Sorensen was running the bottom of the speedway while Mark Noble was piloting Les Duellman’s car into the third spot through the middle of the track.  Nineteen to go and Myer moved back out front as Noble race Sorensen for second and Tim Donlinger moved up from the twelfth spot into fourth.  Myer pulled away to a good half straightaway lead while the battle for second place heated up with Noble, Donlinger and Sorensen all trying to gain control.  Sorensen and Noble kept the battle up until the two cars touched with five to go. The contact ended Noble’s run. After the restart Sorensen and Myer went side by side for the first lap.  Donlinger moved behind Myer for second as Sorensen dropped back to third.  Myer came home with the win and Donlinger took home the 2005 Track Championship.

It has been a great point season at the Deer Creek Speedway and congratulations to all of the track champions.  Deer Creek now closes up the season with three more events.  September 3rd the World Dirt Racing League and the O’Reilly United States Modified Touring Series will be at the speedway for the Labor Day Duel.  September 21-24 will find the 7th annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree featuring the O’Reilly United States Modified Touring Series.  A full show of WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds will be on hand on Thursday.  Friday will find the WISSOTA Street Stocks and on Saturday the WISSOTA Super Stocks take stage for the final night. Deer Creek Speedway will close out the 2005 racing season on October 1st with the annual Fall Festival.
