Teske And Donlinger Feature Winners Again At Deer Creek
By Bill Nelson

August 20 - Spring Valley MN - After a heavy rainfall on Friday night the track crew was busy on the speedway on Saturday morning preparing for a great night of racing action.  With a late announcement from long standing sponsors about an increase purse in the USRA modifeds a great crowd and stellar field of modifieds arrived to do battle on the high banked track.  The weather was perfect on Bigelow Enterprises night and Sanderson Auto Repair was on hand along with Fastenal as additional sponsors on the night. Featherlite Trailers, Bigelow Enterprises and Sun Place Tanning all added money to the $2000 to win USRA modified race.  Another track sponsor Kim and Jackie Crawford of K.C. Lawncare added $200 to the back of the field for the WISSOTA Street Stocks and Midwest Modified drivers as the last ten finishing spots in both classes received an additional $10.00.  With 140 cars on hand in the pit are the racing action on the track was fantastic.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks were awesome tonight with Tony Horsman taking the early lead.  Shaun Wehlage and Mark Zvorak waged war for second while Chuck Nerland moved into fourth early on.  With two laps in the front three came out of four three wide in the race for the lead and kept this going for the next three laps.  A caution with nine to go bunched the field back up.  Wehlage used the high line to take the lead on the restart while Steve Eischens worked into the top 5.  Wehlage and Zvorak started to put some distance over the field during the final laps.  Three to go and Zvorak was putting pressure on Wehlage again. Then as they were coming to the checkers the Wehlage steed went up in smoke allowing Zvorak and Nerland to pass him as he coasted across the line in third.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds had the yellow fever on the night with Dan Svee and Jeremy Laures battling for the lead on the first lap.  Darin Toot came to take home the win though as he went around Svee for the lead on lap three.  Jason Cummins was on a mission also as he moved into second shortly thereafter.  Some entertaining three wide racing was going on through the pack but with multiple restarts the finish came down to a green, white, checkers dash to the finish.  Toot ran the top of the track well but Cummins was able to pull alongside side a couple times but the momentum from the top side held Toot in the lead as he took home the checkers.

Rodney Dregney in a rare appearance at the speedway led early with three and four wide battles behind him early on.  A restart on lap two gave Ferlin Miller the shot at Dregney that he needed as he took over the lead.  With fifteen to go tenth starter Dustin Nelson moved into third while Schatney Sanders and Ryan Siegle raced for the fourth spot. Dregney kept the pressure on up front as Nelson started to gain on the lead duo.  A restart with twelve to go put Nelson in the second spot with Miller slowly pulling away from him while great battles occurred throughout the field.  A caution late in the race set up a dash for the finish.  Miller led through one and two but pushed up hard out of three and four allowing Nelson to move into the lead.  On the white flag lap Miller got close in three as the two made contact out of four and came across the line side by side at the checkers.  Nelson was credited with the win by inches in an exciting finish to the feature.

Troy Brand got the jump on the WISSOTA Late Models with Paul Novotny and Jerry Bloom running side by side for second.  The early lead was short lived as Brand slowed bringing out the caution.  Novonty led on the restart with Nick Herrick racing with Bloom.  Barry Underdahl, Keith Foss and Mark Teske where stacked up behind the two cars in their own battle on their way to the front.  Underdahl was the first through and into second spot with fourteen to go.  Novotny was looking strong holding onto a good lead with Underdahl and Teske following at the half way point.  Teske moved past Underdahl with nine to go as lapped traffic slowed Underdahl.  Teske then set up the same type of pass on Novotny as he slowed for lapped traffic.  Once in front Teske cruised home to yet another feature win.

Curtis Luhmann led the Classic Dwarf car feature early with Kevin Bigalk in second with the Jech’s, Drew and Jeff racing for third.  With thirteen to go Drew moved past Bigalk in one and two and took over the lead in turn three as he went by Luhmann.  As typical of the dwarf cars the top eight dwarf cars were running close with three and four wide races coming out of the corners for position.  With eight to go Mike Gaines moved into second and set his sights on Jech.  A restart with four to go bunched up the field with Gaines and Brian Kiehne on Jech’s bumper.  Jech held on for the checkers in a great race by the dwarf cars.

The final feature of the night was a dandy as the $2000 to win USRA Modifieds pulled onto the track for their 30-lap feature.  With extra money in the purse from Featherlite Trailers, Bigelow Enterprises and Sun Place Tanning a large 38 car field showed up for the Saturday night race.  Steve Wetzstein had his best run of the season at the speedway and led early on in the feature event.  The field was three and four wide for the first few laps as everyone tried to charge towards the front early.  Steve Arpin settled into second with Corey Dripps, Tim Donlinger and Bruce Angst racing behind him.  With twenty four to go Mark Noble slowed bringing out a caution.  Wetzstein ran low on the restart with Donlinger working to his outside.  Donlinger took the lead  with twenty to go while Dripps and Wetzstein went side by side for the next four laps.  Fourteen to go and Dripps really had the top side working as he closed in on the leader.  But a heavy brush with the wall slowed down his progress.  Tommy Myer and Brad McEwan were trying to crack the top five late in the race as they came up from deeper in the field.  Donlinger held on for another win at the speedway and the $2,000 prize.
