Conrad Visits Victory Lane At Deer Creek
By Bill Nelson

August 13, 2005 - Spring Valley MN - Essig Insurance agency and Wynn’s night found perfect weather with 116 cars on hand and an exuberant crowd.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the field for their feature event after a quick blade job and slight misting to settle down a slightly rough track.  The work paid off as the street stocks had a beautiful track.  Michael Conrad jumped out to an early lead with Chuck Nerland in second.  Thirteen to go the field was searching all around the track for the fastest line for their car.  Danny Hanson started to work on Nerland on the lower side of the speedway.  Steve Eischens and Kevin Hager were racing for fifth with ten to go as Shaun Wehlage followed behind them. With six to go Zvorak began working on Hanson for third while Hanson raced beside Nerland.  Zvorak was able to move past Hanson and pulled alongside of Nerland.  With two to go Zvorak was able to gain the second spot but up front it was Conrad for his first ever feature win at Deer Creek Speedway.  The tech guys also drew a number for one lucky driver to receive a $100 bonus for the feature going non-stop.

Greg Pfeifer Jr. paced the field to the green flag and led for the first lap as some three and four wide battles raged through the field.  Kenny Wytaske moved into the second spot early.  Darin Toot, Bryan Hernandez and Dean Hoffman were three wide for third.  A restart with ten to go found Pfeifer still in first resisting the heavy pressure from Wytaske. Toot and Hernandez continued to battle for third as Jason Cummins tried to work past those two.  Mid pack there was some great racing through the last five laps while up front Wytaske continued to try to find a way under Pfeifer.  It was Pfeifer’s night though as he held on for the win.

Dave Haberman has struggled through most of the season but after a good heat race found himself on the front row for the WISSOTA Super Stock feature.  Haberman led the first lap followed by another struggling car as Jason Gabrielson moved into second.  Kevin Hager, David Gustafson and Schatney Sanders were three wide for third.  Gabrielson was working under Haberman for the lead for the next couple circuits as a big pack of cars raced for fifth.  A restart with fifteen to go found Dustin Nelson and Hager dueling for fourth.  Sanders took over the second spot as Cole Queensland moved past Hager with eight to go.  Gabrielson soon had his hands full with Queensland and Nelson for the third spot.  With four to go Nelson took the third spot as Matt Durnen moved in to race with Queensland and Gabrielson.  Durnen and Queensland got together exiting four with three to go.  Sanders had a great restart and ran beside Haberman for the final two circuits but Haberman was good on the top side of the speedway and held on for the win.

Brad Waits and Bruce Angst battled for the first two laps with Waits credited with the lead on the restart.  Waits again held the lead with three wide racing the norm in the field as they ran all over the racetrack.  Tim Donlinger moved into the second spot and Mike Sorensen moved into the third spot.  Fifteen to go and Donlinger moved alongside of Waits as the two ran side by side in an awesome race for the lead for four laps.  Donlinger got the edge at the line with ten to go as a caution flew.  Sorensen worked into second on the restart.  Seven to go found Jesse Frericks in the top five after starting fifteenth on the field.  Donlinger slowly pulled away from the field as a fierce battle ensued for fifth with Frericks, Angst, steve Arpin, Jay Ihrke, Bob Timm and Nate Wasmund all swapping positions.  Donlinger took home the checker flag.

Jeff Jech lead the Classic Dwarf cars early with Drew Jech and Roger Torgerson racing for second.  The top five were all running close for position.  Ten to go and Todd Kiehne and Drew Jech moved into first and second and battled for position.  Mike Gaines and Jeff Jech battled for third with Rick Utley directly behind them.  With seven to go Gaines joined Drew and Kiehne up front as they raced three wide for the lead. A great battle ensued as the started to work lapped traffic and swapping the lead.  Gaines was able to get command of the lead with two to go and took home the checkers.

Ben Mattick led the WISSOTA Late Model race early with Keith Foss in second.  A three wide battle for fifth quickly ensued as some strong cars started mid pack.  Mattick found the top groove to his liking with Mark Teske moving into third with fifteen to go.  Paul Novotny was making the bottom of the track work for him as he moved into fourth.  A restart with thirteen to go found Foss attacking Mattick again but lost a little momentum out of two allowing Teske to take second.  A restart with ten to go found Teske putting pressure on Mattick.  Teske was able to gain the advantage at the line but Mattick was really making the top work and hung tight to the rear corner of Teske.  Novonty, Foss and Troy Brand had a great race for third with Brand making the top side work well.  Brand soon took over third and as Mattick worked to find a little quicker line Brand was able to work outside of Mattick for second with one to go.  Time ran out for Brand as Teske took home the win.
