Donlinger’s Dominance Continues At Deer Creek
By Bill Nelson

August 6 - Spring Valley Mn - A great field of 127 cars checked into the back gate on Quality Auto night.  The drivers, crews and fans were also treated to a display of the Castrol GTX NHRA Funny Car that was on hand courtesy of Greenway.

The classic dwarf cars were first on the track for their feature with extra money on the line courtesy of Quality Auto and dwarf car driver Rick Utley.  Roger Torgerson took off from the pole position and into the lead with Brian Kiehne working to his inside.  Tate Bestor quickly worked into the third spot as four cars battled for the fourth spot. Ten to go and Drew Jech worked into the fourth position as the top three ran nose to tail around the top side of the track.  With five to go Bestor slowed and then pulled to the inside of the track with problems. Kiehne chased Torgerson around the top side of the track and moved alongside coming to the white out of four but was unable to complete the pass with Torgerson taking the win.

After an early restart Bryan Hernandez took the lead with Darin Toot and Greg Erickson in hot pursuit during the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature.  Sean Hemker worked beside Erickson as the two raced for the third spot.  Track conditions were great with drivers searching for their cars preferred lines around the 3/8 mile speedway.  Hernandez slowly pulled out to a good lead over Toot, while Travis Krause and Mike Paulson battle for the fifth position.  With three to go Krause, Paulson, Hemker, Kenny Wytaske and Tim Brown were all in a big group as the caution flew.  The caution set up a green white checker dash to the finish.  Hernandez was not to be denied by the heavy pressure that Toot put on him as he crossed the line first.

Ryan Siegle and Dave Haberman paced the WISSOTA Super Stocks to the green flag with Siegle taking the early lead.  Most of the field ran two and three wide early as Siegle started to get pressure from Haberman on the bottom with Ted Marrs behind the lead duo.  A restart with sixteen to go saw the top ten running tight with some great racing action. Marrs moved up to battle with Siegle for the lead with Ferlin Miller running them down.  Another quick caution found Miller side by side with Siegle as they exited two on the restart with Miller taking the lead at the line.  Late in the race Tim Johnson found the top side to his liking as he moved into the top five while Dave Mass followed him as Johnson moved past Dustin Nelson for fourth and on the last lap Mass powered by on the outside for fifth.  Miller came home with the win and Siegle finished second with his best run of the season.

The USRA modifieds had some great battles early on as some fast drivers made their way to the front.  Brad Waits led early with Mike Sorensen working into second quickly.  Trevis Underdahl and Doug Hillson raced for the third spot with Steve Arpin and Bob Timm trying to make the top side work early on.  Seventeen to go and Sorensen worked under Waits for the lead.  Jesse Frericks, Arpin, Tim Donlinger, Hillson and Timm were now locked in a super battle for third.  Each driver had the advantage at one time or another as they race every where on the track.  With fifteen to go a caution few with Donlinger into the third spot after starting sixteenth on the grid.  Donlinger took second away from Waits on the restart and set sail after Sorensen out front, behind the front three the racing heated up with some three and four wide battles for position.  Twelve to go and Donlinger took over the lead.  Neil Eckhart, Arpin and Timm now battled for fourth behind a strong running Frericks. With five to go Timm and Eckhart closed up on Frericks and moved past him as Donlinger pulled out to a half straight away lead and took the win.

The WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled of another good race running without caution for the distance.  Ernie Kramer and Danny Hanson battled their five cars for the lead early with Hanson taking the lead at the completion of the first lap.  Kevin Baron worked to the bottom of Hanson with eleven to go to take over the lead while Shaun Wehlage moved into second on the following lap.  With seven laps still remaining Wehlage started to put pressure on Baron.  Baron was working the middle of the track while Wehlage was keeping it tight around the bottom.  With five to go Wehalge took the lead and held on for the win.

The WISSOTA Late Models found Nick Herrick leading while Paul Novotny quickly moved into second.  Novotny quickly moved into the lead with two laps completed but Herrick held onto his bumper.  Lance Matthees and Mark Teske worked into the top five early.  With thirteen to go Matthees and Herrick were racing hard for second.  Herrick held Matthees off for two laps.  At the time Matthees cleared into second Keith Foss found something to his liking up top.  Nine to go and Foss cleared Herrick for third.  Matthees was next on the list as Foss picked him off with seven laps to go.  Six to go found Novotny and Foss side by side.  Foss took over the lead as Chris Adams, Herrick and Barry Underdahl were three wide for fifth.  Teske moved up to race with Matthees for third as the two of them tried to catch Foss.  Foss took home the win for his first of the season.
