Toot And Nerland Take First Checkers Of The Season
By Bill Nelson
July 23, 2005
A nice crowd and 116 cars attended Keystone Automotive night despite the
highly humid and overcast night. Those who braved the humid conditions
were treated to some great racing action throughout the night with the final
checkers waving at 9:30.
Only two cautions were brought out for the WISSOTA Midwest Modified divison as
the cars had a great feature race. Greg Pfeifer Jr. led the first lap as
the field came out of four in a four wide formation for the second spot.
Joe Wernecke came out on top of the heat while the rest of the field battled
hard through the packs. Greg Erickson is looking to have adapted to the
division and moved up behind Wernecke in the second position with five laps
completed. Jason Cummins moved up to race with Erickson but the two
touched with Cummins receiving a flat and going pit side during the first
caution. The bunching up the field gave Darin Toot all the chance he
needed as he worked up from his eleventh starting spot and into the lead two
laps after the restart. Another charger through the field was Craig
Bentzin who came up from twelfth and put Erickson back into the fourth spot as
he sought another feature win. With two to go Bentzin worked past Wernecke for
the second spot but Toot had pulled out to a very good lead and held on for
his first ever Midwest Modified win.
A green, white, checker race to a win is what was in store for the WISSOTA
Street Stocks on this night. Chuck Nerland used the pole position to his
advantage and jumped out to an early lead with Steve Eischens nipping on his
bumper. With three down mark Zovorak and Tony Shaner raced hard for the
third spot as Tom McEldowney, Tony Horsman, Danny Hanson and Shaun Wehlage all
ran in a pack behind them. McEldowney found the middle groove to work the best
and soon was in fourth. Nerland put some distance on Eischens by the
half way mark as they both pulled away from the field. At the finish it
was Nerland by half a straight with Eischens in second and Zvorak rounding out
the top three.
Cole Queensland and Brad VanZuilen duked it out for the first two laps with
Queensland leading lap one and VanZuilen leading the second lap as a caution
flew. On the restart Dustin Nelson moved into the lead around the bottom
as VanZuilen and Queensland made contact sending Cole to the infield.
Justin Sass was also very strong early as he worked into third while
thirteenth starter Schatney Sanders moved into fourth. VanZuilen was
running up top with Nelson in the middle for the middle segment of the race as
VanZuilen made a good charge up to him. Nelson was too strong in his
preferred groove and fended off the advances. With five to go Sanders
moved into third and pressured VanZuilen for the second spot. The two
ran side by side for two laps until VanZuilen slipped up a little allowing
Sanders by. Sanders put pressure on Nelson for the last two laps and put
his nose under him once while Nelson held his ground for the win.
The USRA Modifieds put on a fantastic show again with Hank Rollinger taking
the early lead. Bruce Angst and Dain Schultz were locked in a dead heat
for second with Mike Sorensen behind them. Schultz and Sorensen cleared
into their own second place battle while the field stacked up three wide
behind them as the first caution flew with sixteen laps left. With two
more laps completed Tim Donlinger moved into the second spot with Neil Eckhart
and Steve Arpin battling for fifth. By the halfway point Donlinger had
moved past Sorensen and was checking out from the field while Arpin found his
groove up top. A restart with three to go gave Arpin his shot and he
used it to his advantage first nocking off Rollinger and finally
Sorensen as he worked into second. Donlinger was fast in the middle again and
held on for the win.
The Classic Dwarf Cars pulled out another green, white, checker race with
Brian Kiehne taking the early lead. Rick Utley and Danny Torgerson in
from Arizona raced for second with Drew Jech looking for way by. They came
three wide out of four with five laps completed with Jech taking over the
second spot Torgerson then split the front two and took over the lead
with Jech in hot pursuit. With six to go Jech took the lead away for
Togerson who was now left to battle with Kiehne for the second spot.
Drew held on for his second win in a row.
The WISSOTA Late Models had a strong field of competitors again with Mark
Teske having multiple feature wins sitting on the pole position. He used the
spot to take the early lead while Lance Matthees worked the low line around
the speedway. Rick Hanestad was working the high line and moved past
Matthees for second until Matthees moved up another groove and worked back
into second. Adam Hensel and John Kaanta battled race long for fourth
while Teske and Matthees continued their duel up front. Brad Waits
joined Hensel and Kaanta for a couple laps until falling in behind them.
With six to go the race up front got interesting as lapped traffic came into
play. Teske was slowly picking his way through the cars while Matthees
continued to work on him. The two were side by side in the corners while
working traffic but once in the open Teske would hold the point. Teske
went on for the win with Matthees second and Hanestad third.
