Brauer Takes First Checkers At Deer Creek
By Bill Nelson
July 16, 2005

It seems the dog days of summer are upon us with the temperatures hovering in the upper 90’s throughout the day an enthusiastic crowd attended the Justice Brothers night at the speedway.  Guilland Enterprises was on hand and presented two bikes to lucky fans along with some NASCAR die cast and many other prizes.

Tyler Rubin, Danny Hanson and Shaun Wehlage rolled through turn one and two on the opening lap in a battle for the lead in the WISSOTA Street Stocks.  After the completion of lap one Hanson was solidly in first followed by Wehlage.  The top five cars on the speedway were finding the top groove to their liking as others worked the bottom to try and move forward.  Wehlage started to work the bottom of the speedway in the middle of the race as Hanson continued in the preferred upper groove.  Jamie Johnson and Tyler Rubin battled hard for third as a caution flew for a spinning Wehlage.  On the restart Hanson continued to lead with the battle behind him resuming for the second spot.  Johnson and Rubin continued the side by side for the last five laps with Hanson taking home the win.

Jeff Brauer lead the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds early on with first time competitor Darin Toot in second with Tom Paulson right behind him.  Kenny Wytaske was on the move early on and with thirteen to go worked into the top four.  Wytaske quickly disposed of Paulson and ran Toot for second.  The top and bottom grooves of the speedway came in as both lines were quick.  With a good battle going on up front between Brauer, Wytaske and Toot the rear of the field had some yellow fever.  After a few cautions in the middle of the race the final three lap dash was a good one with Brauer and Wytaske duking it out for the win.  On the last lap Wytaske was able to pull alongside of Brauer but Jeff was not to be denied the win on this night.

After a complete restart on the opening lap of the WISSOTA Super Stocks the rest of the race went with only one more caution.  Last weeks winner Brad VanZuilen took over where he left off last week with the early lead.  Behind him Bobby Swanson and Dustin Nelson were locked in the race for second.  Schatney Sanders was quickly moving through the field and was in fourth while the rest of the pack battled for positions.  With seventeen laps to go Nelson found the lower part of the track to his liking and held onto the second spot.  Nelson cleared VanZuilen into the lead with Swanson and Sanders racing for third as they close in on VanZuilen.  With nine to go Sanders worked under VanZuilen into the second spot.  Sanders kept running the middle of the track and with two to go moved past Nelson for the lead and held on for the win.

The USRA Modifieds have consistently provided the best racing of the season and this night was no different.  Mike Sorensen got the jump on the field at the drop of the green flag with many three wide battles through the field.  Tim Donlinger followed Sorensen into the second spot with a pack of five cars battling for fourth.  Fifteen laps to go and Sorensen and Donlinger slowly pulled away from the field, Donlinger was making the middle of the track work on moved past Sorensen.  With ten to go the position battles were still going strong through the field as Donlinger moved out to a five car length advantage.  Neil Eckhart had moved into third by this time.  Donlinger started to encounter lapped traffic with eight laps left as Brad Waits, Albert Wytaske and Bob Timm were three wide for fourth.  Timm gained the spot and raced with Eckhart for the third spot for the last four circuits while Sorensen found another fast groove to his liking and started to pull back up to Donlinger.  Going through one on the white flag lap Sorensen moved alongside for the lead.  On the back straight he gained the lead and held on for the win.

The classic dwarf cars had one of their classics on the night with Tate Bestor pacing the field to the green.  A five car battle for the lead ensued on the second lap and after three laps Jeff Jech came out of the pack with the lead.  Rick Utley was in second battling with Drew Jech as the cars circled the track.  Drew gained the second spot and tracked down his dad with eight to go took over the lead.  Mike Gaines and Brian Kiehne were also working their way through the pack.  With seven to go Jeff and Utley raced side by side for second.  Gaines shortly took over the third spot.  With four to go Gaines moved into the second spot and closed in on Drew.  Coming to the white Gaines pulled alongside the rear quarter of Jech but was unable to make any more ground as Drew took home the checkers in a caution free race.

Mark Teske has had the luck of the draw on his side recently and started on the pole for the feature event.  Troy Brand moved through into second as Teske started to pull away from the field after a brief battle with Brand.  Chris Adams, Jerry Bloom and Paul Novotny battled early for sixth as Teske continued to dominate up front.  With twelve to go eighth place starter Barry Underdahl worked into third and started to hound Brand’s every move.  Nick Herrick was running a strong fourth with Adams and Novotny behind him for fifth.  A caution with six to go bunched up the field.  Teske immediately pulled back out front with Brand in second.  With three to go Brand pushed up the track allowing Underdahl to take over second as they followed Teske home across the line.
