Fast Times At Deer Creek Bumper To Bumper IRA Sprint Show
By Bill Nelson
June 25 - Spring Valley MN - An overcast day greeted the fans and drivers for
the first ever Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car show. A great crowd
attended the racing action along with a nice field of 27 410 sprint
cars. Featherlite Trailers were on hand showing off their latest wares
as sponsors of the nights racing action. The track held up very well
under the pounding by the fast running winged warriors. Fast time on the
night was set by John Sernett with a 12.592 second lap setting a new track
record and with an average speed of 107.211 mph.
Cole Queensland and Dennis Earney paced the stout field of WISSOTA Super
Stocks. Queensland got the early jump with Ferlin Miller following him
around the high side into second. With fifteen laps remaining the field
started to spread out as the upper grooves of the speedway were the quick way
around. Troy Langowski and Kevin Hager battled for the fourth spot as
the front three pulled out to a good lead over the rest of the field.
With twelve to go Miller got a run on Queensland and moved past to the lead
after two laps of swapping spots and lines. The fifth through tenth
spots on the speedway had an awesome race with some 3 & 4 wide battles
exiting the corner. The top three stayed on line to the checkers with
Miller taking home his first win of the season followed by Queensland and
Earney.
With possible rain showers moving into the area the IRA Sprint Cars were
pushed onto the track and their feature event was started in short
order. On the initial start Billy Balog and Dave Uttech got together
with both drivers going into the pits are returning. Uttech pulled back
off after a couple laps of racing action. Scott Biertzner led early on
with Travis Whitney and Mike Reinke battling for second. Reinke was
running the wall and Whitney down on the bottom. With every inch of the
racing surface being used throughout the field you knew it was only a matter
of time before another caution came out. Scott Young moved into fourth
and followed this battle for a long time until a caution flew on lap 10.
The next ten laps were incredible. Reinke, Whitney, Young and Neitzel
had an awesome battle for ten laps. A lot of position changes with some
3 & 4 wide racing out of the corners. That battle could make a
sprint car fan out of anyone. On lap 20 a caution flew and then it was
Whitney into second as Neitzel and Reinke battled with Young right behind
them. Whitney used the restart to his advantage as he worked into the
lead but not without a battle from Biertzner. After another caution on
lap 25 for a spin by Reinke after brushing the wall in turn 2, Young
moved past Neitzel and Jerry Richert Jr. worked into the top 3. It was a
great feature event with action happening throughout the field and too many
things going on to keep track of. Lapped traffic started to come into
play after each five laps of green flag action and made for some dicing
maneuvers. Drivers were very happy with the racing action and hope to
return to the speedway during the 2006 racing season.
