Sanders, Bentzin Rack Up First Wins Of Season
By Bill Nelson
June 5th - Spring Valley MN - With threatening weather throughout southern
Minnesota and rain less than 20 miles away during most of the day the
Speedplant geared up for another Saturday night of racing action. An
enthusiastic crowd was on hand to watch the 127 cars that checked into the
back gate to do battle on the fast 3/8 mile track.
After a slight break for some track prep the WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto
the speedway for their feature event. Danny Hanson used his pole
position to pull into the lead early on with Shaun Wehlage, Tyler Rubin and
Mark Zvorak locked in a great battle for second. With thirteen laps
remaining Wehlage worked into second and immediately put pressure on Hanson on
the low side of the speedway. Wehlage took the spot but Hanson kept the
pressure on trying to get back past. Tyler Rubin sat in third place
waiting for a mistake to get past the lead duo. Fifteenth starting Scott Olson
worked into the fourth position with nine to go and started to put pressure on
Rubin for third. Wehlage and Hanson slowly checked out from the field
with Wehlage taking the checkers as Rubin exited four.
Derrick Bridley paced the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds to the green with Craig
Bentzin jumping into second. The field ran two and three wide for the
first two laps until Bridley spun in four. On the restart Bentzin led
with Jerry Young moving into second. Ryan Weber and Jason Cummins
battled for third with the rest of the field running side by side. With
eleven laps remaining Young pulled up lame bringing out a caution. On
the restart Bentzin led again with Cummins following in second. Weber,
Travis Krause, Dean Hoffman and Bryan Hernandez had a great battle for
third. During the last five circuits of the speedway they swapped places
and ran in a pack with Ben Anderson joining them on the final two laps.
Bentzin held on for his first win of the season followed by Cummins.
Jake Redetske led early in the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature with Schatney
Sanders following him around the high line at the Speedway. On the
second lap Sanders moved outside of Redetske to take the lead. These two
cars were flying and they checked out from the field with thirteen to go
putting a full straightaway on the third place car. A couple restarts
bunched the field back up but the front two always pulled away from the pack.
The final restart found Redetske pushing up in two allowing Jason Gabrielson
and Dustin Nelson blasting past for second and third. The field ran the
remaining laps to the checkers with Nelson following Sanders across the line.
Bob Timm, Karl Fenske and Mike Sorensen all moved to the top of the speedway
early on as the USRA modifieds made their high speed ballet around the top of
the wall. Sorensen moved to the bottom of the track on the next restart
allowing Tim Donlinger to move up and battle with Fenske for second.
Sorensen was able to move into the second spot but had nothing for Timm up
front. In the later stages of the race Sorensen was able to get a run on
Timm but not able to make the pass. During the last two circuits of the
speedway Timm had a couple brushed with the wall and exiting turn three on the
last lap brushed the wall really hard. Sorensen made a dash for the win
but Timm was able to recover in time to take the checkers.
The last two races of the night were the best with the WISSOTA Late Models
finding Lance Matthees pacing the field to the green and taking home the
checkers. He was pushed at the end by Rick Hanestad but the rest of the
field had great racing all night lone. With Matthees out front Nick
Herrick, Brad Waits and Ben Mattick were three wide for third. Right
behind them Steve Yaggy, Paul Novotny and Mark Teske waged their own battle
for position. With fourteen laps to go the front two of Matthees and
Hanestad pulled out to a good lead while the rest of the field kept battling
for position. Two quick cautions at the half way point bunched the field
back up. Matthees again pulled out front with Hanestad second.
Waits and Herrick battled for third with Teske and Novotny racing for
fifth. Herrick slipped up slightly with Teske moving up to race with
Waits. The two ran side by side until Teske gained the advantage on the
last lap.
For the first four laps of the Classic Dwarf car feature the father and son
duo of Jeff and Drew Jech ran side by side for the lead. Drew was making
the bottom of the speedway work while dad was up top. Roger Torgerson,
Tate Bestor and Brian Kiehne all were bunched up with the leaders as everyone
diced for the positions. Mike Gaines joined into the fray later on as
they ran three and four wide around the speedway. Brian Kiehne and Jeff Jech
made contact bringing out a caution. On the restart Gaines and Torgerson
worked into the top two spots.
