Myer And Teske Take First Wins Of The Season
By Bill Nelson
April 23, 2005

Spring Valley MN - 156 cars checked into the Deer Creek Speedway on this cool and blustery night.  The Official Dealership of Deer Creek Speedway were on hand this night as the event sponsor and also provided a new 2005 Ford Mustang pace car for the racing action.

The first feature of the evening was another dandy of an event put on by the WISSOTA Street Stocks.  The street stocks have started out the season with two of the best feature races.  Last feature winner Steve Eischens started off on the pole position alongside of Heat race winner Mark Zvorak.  Eischens took the early lead with Zvorak and Cory Rosen in hot pursuit.  As they ran side by side Rosen slip up the track in turn two and brushed the wall and dropped back to tenth early on.  With Rosen out of the picture Zvorak was challenged by Jim Gullikson, Chuck Nerland, Danny Hanson and Wayne Dean as these five drivers raced two and three wide with each putting pressure on Eischens in the first couple laps.  Gullikson took the second spot for good on lap 4 and set out after Eischens.  Hanson, Dean and Zvorak continued their three car battle for third.  With seven racing laps left in the feature Gullikson moved past Eischens for the top spot.  Hanson and Dean then moved alongside Eischens for second.  A caution period with five laps remaining tightened up the battle for the top spots.  Gullikson held the point on the restart with Hanson moving up to battle him on the low side.  Hanson moved just past Gullikson as the caution flew again negating his pass for the lead.  With the restart Hanson and Dean ran side by side for the last three laps with Gullikson holding on for the win.  Dean used the top side to take second place by about three feet in another exciting race.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds hit the track for a caution plagued event which saw five laps cut from their fifteen lap event.  Joe Wernecke took the early lead followed closely by Kenny Wytaske and Dean Hoffman. Coming to the line on the second lap the three were three wide for the lead at the stripe.  Working on lap three the first caution flew for a spin in turn two ending Jerry Young's night with a bent front end.  On the restart Tom Paulson got a good run through one and two to take over the fourth spot and pressure the top three.  Wytaske took over the second spot on the next lap as another caution flew.  The restart was negated by another spin but Dean Hoffman took the lead on the restart powering by Wernecke on the bottom of the track.  With ten laps remaining Hoffman led with Wytaske and Greg Pfeifer Jr. battling for second.  The eleventh starting Pfeifer was running the low line while twenty fourth starting Jason Cummins was working up high and cracked the top five.  The final caution of the event flew when Ben Rippentrop, Mike Paulson, Joe Bunne and Derrick Bridley tried to come out of two four wide. With the nobody backing off the four drivers spun on the back stretch.  Pfeifer Jr. used the restart to take over the second spot from Wytaske but Hoffman held on for his first feature win at the Speedway.

Jason Gabrielson led the WISSOTA Super Stock feature event with the field running two and three wide behind him.  Cole Queensland showed some strength early as he worked into the second position and Kevin Hager looked good early on in third.  With seventeen laps remaining Queensland and Gabrielson ran side by side for the lead.  The Super Stocks were running the bottom of the speedway on this night with Queensland trying to squeeze through on the bottom.  Previous feature winner and ninth place starter Dustin Nelson worked into the top five with thirteen laps remaining as a caution bunched up the field.  On the restart Queensland went to the outside of Gabrielson to take over the lead.  Hager worked around Gabrielson for second as Queensland pulled slowly away from the field. With six laps remaining Nelson continued his march up through the field and pulled along side of Hager for second.  A caution flew with three laps remaining and a few restarts were needed to complete these last three laps.  Nelson moved alongside of Queensland on the first restart and the two came out of four side by side as another caution flew.  Nelson slipped up the track in two on the final restart with Queensland coming home with the win, Aaron Wilson sat quietly inside the top five for most of the race but used the final restarts to his advantage and came home with a excellent second place finish.

After a rain out in Memphis Missouri many travelers decide to take the trip up north to Deer Creek Speedway strengthening an already stellar field of drivers at the track weekly.  Neil Eckhart and Tommy Myer battled hard for the first lap until Mark Noble moved under the two for the lead.  Noble slipped up in turn two on the next lap and Eckhart and Myer moved back up front.  Myer took over the top spot then with Brad McEwan movin into third past Noble.  A caution with ten to go saw Myer hold onto the lead while twelfth starting Kelly Shyrock moved up the track slightly and found a slightly faster line and worked into the top five with eight to go  Noble moved back forward and pulled even with Myer again with seven to go.  Shyrock then moved outside of Noble on the next lap as Myer began to lengthen his lead again.  After sixteen laps of racing another caution flew, and on the ensuing restart a big shakeup in the running order from fifth on back took place as the cars all jockeyed for position. Noble regained the second spot as Myer held on for the win over the final four circuits.

The Classic Dwarf cars saw Corey Whalen, Mike Gaines and Tate Bestor racing for the lead early on.  Ninth place started and defending track champion Brian Kiehne came charging up through the field and with twelve laps remaining took over the top spot.  Drew Jech worked into second with six laps remaining but was unable to make up any ground on Keihne up front.  Kiehne dominated the event winning by a full straight away at the finish.

Some traveling WISSOTA Late Models showed up on this night to contest the local drivers.  Ben Mattick held the point early on followed closely by Duane Mahder in second.  With three laps in the book Mahder worked under Mattick to take the top spot.  A spin bunched up the field and on the restart Mark Teske in his first visit this season moved up the track and powered by Mattick to take second.  Teske and Mahder battled for the lead early on as Teske was faster in three and four but in two would loose momentum as a slick spot up high effected his line.    Nick Herrick and Barry Underdahl had a great race for fourth during the first half of the race with Herrick finally gaining the advantage.  Lance Matthees had a poor draw and after starting eleventh on the field worked into the top four during a late restart.  With five to go the final caution of the night flew.  On the restart Mahder led but Teske kept battling and with three to go Teske was finally able to make the line in three and four work to his advantage and he moved by on the top to take over the lead.

Next week all six classes return for action on the fast 3/8 mile high banked track during Carlsen Construction night.
