From Wreckers To Checkers For Siercks
By Bill Nelson

Spring Valley MN - August 14 - A perfect day for racing in Southern Minnesota with temps in the mid-70’s at race time and cooling to the 60’s as the last checker flag waved shortly before 10:00.  Five out of Six classes found first time winners at the speedway on Glynn’s Motor Mart night of Grand Meadow.

The first class on the track for the night was the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with Vince Corbin jumping out to the early lead.  Behind him the battles were fighting hard for position three and four wide through the pack.  Two laps down Greg Pfeifer Jr. and Tim Siercks were locked in a battle for the second spot.   Coming to the line Siercks took the position as Nick Kramer and Troy Hale moved up and raced with Pfeifer for the third spot as the first caution flew.  On the restart Corbin led with Siercks now solidly in second, Kramer, Pfeifer and Bentzin were now battling three wide for fourth with Hale in third.  With six circuits left in the race Siercks pulled to the inside of Corbin to make a pass for the win.  Corbin slowed drastically and pulled to the top side of the track with a flat tire ending a great run for him.  Siercks held the lead on the next restart with Kramer and Bentzin moving around Hale as he exited the track with problems.  With five laps left the mid pack was were the action was taking place with some three wide battles for position.  Terry Timmerman worked his way into the top five after starting reward on the last caution period and changing a flat.  Siercks was not to be denied this night and fended off some late race challenges to take home is first victory of the season.  Siercks worked hard on his car this past week after destroying it in a wreck during last weeks feature event.

After a light misting of the track the WISSOTA Street Stocks took to the track.  The Street Stocks have put on some great races this year and this was no exception.  David Gustafson took the early lead followed by Fred Prudoehl as the rest of the field formed up three wide behind them.  Early on Tom McEldwoney and Danny Hanson were the cars to watch further back through the field as they were charging hard on the top side of the track.  Twelve to go Travis Krause, Chuck Nerland and John Lamb were in a heated battle for the third spot.  With ten to go the top six were in a tight pack and stayed that way for four laps as the battled for position.  With eight laps to go Krause worked into the second spot and on the next lap pulled alongside of Gustafson for the lead.   Hanson was making his presence know with five to go as he worked into the second spot running against the wall.  Krause pulled out to a good lead and held that to the checkers.

Chris Klinger, Ryan Siegle, Matt Durnen and Schatney Sanders went into the first corner four wide on the start of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature and held that for most of the first lap until Siegle slipped back slightly.  Adam Stockhausen and Bill Clemens joined in with the front group in a six car battle for the lead.  Stockhausen took the lead with Clemens working into second. With fifteen to go Clemens pulled under Stockhausen and the two ran side by side for the lead.  The two of them raced hard with officials throwing the black flag for Clemens for rough driving.  Klinger and Sanders battled for second as Clemens slowed to pull off the track and was ran into by Haberman.  Stockhausen restarted with the lead with Klinger in second and Siegle and Sanders battling for third.  With two to go Klinger moved beside Stockhausen as the two took the white side by side.  Klinger came home with his first feature win of the season.

Wall Bouncing, Sparks Flying and just flat out hard racing pretty much describes the USRA modified feature.  Hank Rollinger took the early lead with Karl Fenske close behind.  Neil Eckhart and Jesse Frericks battled early for the third position.  Thirteen laps left in the race and Fenske took the lead but Rollinger fought him hard for the next couple circuits.  Caution flew with eleven laps to go with Fenske pacing the field back to the green.  Fenske was working the cushion on the top of the track while Frericks worked low into the second spot.  The final caution flew with seven laps to go.  Fenske jumped the cushion on the next lap and grazed the turn four wall and even had sparks flying down the front straight wall as Frericks, Donlinger and Rollinger battled for position behind him.  Donlinger took the second spot as Fenske jumped the cushion again and got out of shape in four but kept the pedal mashed and pulled off the wall still holding the lead.  Brad Waits was also working the top of the track and moved past Frericks into the third spot while Fenske started to pull away up front.  At the checkers it was Fenske with his first win of the season making 13 different drivers taking home feature wins this year in the modified class.

Curt Myers made his first visit to the Deer Creek Speedway in the WISSOTA Late Model division a memorable one.  Myers used the outside front row starting spot to the take the early lead.  Paul Novotny purchased the spare Lance Matthees car this week and battled with Jon Chrest and Brad Waits for the third spot.  Barry Underdahl was running second and worked to the inside of Myers a couple times during the opening laps but was unable to make the pass for the lead.  Waits was flying on the top side of the racetrack early on again this week as Novotny and Underdahl and him were racing for the second spot.  With fourteen to go Underdahl dropped back slightly as the second place battle stayed fierce.  Novotny was working the extreme inside of the track.  The top seven cars were within 5 car lengths of each other in a tight pack with Novotny and Waits and Matthees and Underdahl side by side for position.  The caution flew as Joe Ludemann limped his car off the track.  On the restart Waits slowed and pulled off the speedway with eight to go.  Myers continued to lead up front with Paul Novotny running low in second and the machine of Jon Chrest coming back to life on the top side of the speedway in third.  Chrest moved alongside of Novotny for second with four to go and slowly took over the position.  Myers held on for his first ever WISSOTA Late Model victory with Chrest second.

The Classic Dwarf Cars pulled on the track to round out the racing action for the night with Corey Whalen jumping into the early lead.  Curtis Luhmann moved into second early on.  With three circuits completed Brian Kiehne moved up from his thirteenth starting spot to take second.  Drew Jech looked strong early on working around Luhmann for third.  Rick Utley slid back from his pole starting position but got the handle back on his machine with five laps completed and moved past Luhmann for fourth.  Tate Bestor moved up to battle with Utley for fourth.  Whalen and Kiehne pulled away from the field up front with three to go the battle for third got heated up with Bestor, Utley and Jech running three wide for the position.  Kiehne pulled up to challenge Whalen over the last few laps but was unable to get a good run.  Whalen came home with his first win of the season.
