Myer Tops USRA Modified Feature
By Bill Nelson
Spring Valley MN (August 7) - 139 cars checked into the pits at Deer Creek
Speedway on this August night. The night started out with a moment of
silence and with the Jim Dahle family gathered on the infield and drivers and
crews standing beside them corner worker Eric Thronson sang the National
Anthem with the color guard present. The family was presented money
collected from the week before as drivers had made their way into the stands
during the red flag incident. Charter Communications has announced that
10% of their sales will go to the family during the course of last week and
this week. The Deer Creek track crew and promoters put in another
donation and Layne Roberts from KRA was on hand also to present money
collected at their track on Thursday. A 50/50 drawing was held and
raised almost $1300.00. Becky Noble drew the winning number and a member
of the Dahle family held the winning ticket. Approx. $7,000 was
distributed to the family of the fallen racer. The Classic Dwarf cars
made a parade lap carrying a flag with the number 47 in memory of Dahle and
started the feature with a missing man formation. Track crew and
personal also wore black arm bands in honor of the fallen racer. It was
a great closure to a tough week for everyone at Deer Creek. Thanks to
the excellent field of cars and the great crowd that were on hand for the
activities. A special thanks to the Dahle family and everyone who helped
us, called us or e-mailed us with their thoughts, prayers and wishes as we
worked through this rough time.
The racing action was hot in all six classes with Quality Auto Sales of
Rochester, Expert Insulation and Stortz Satellite of Canton on hand as the
event sponsors for the nights racing action. Added prize money was
distributed to the Classic Dwarf cars courtesy of Quality Auto Sales of
Rochester. Culver’s of Rochester was also on hand distributing gifts
and free meals to those guessing finishing positions of the feature races.
Shaun Wehlage rocketed out to the early lead in the WISSOTA Street Stocks
followed closely by Steve Eischens. Sixth starting Travis Krause moved
into third at the completion of the first lap. Eischens started to work
the middle of the track as he put pressure on Wehlage while Krause started to
work the bottom of the track. The top three continued to battle and
slowly pulled away from the field as Chuck Nerland and Fred Prudoehl battled
for the fourth positon. Eleven laps to go in the race and Eischens
pulled alongside of Wehalge at the line and held this spot for two laps.
Krause got a good run out of two and they came off the corner three wide with
Krause and Eischens making light contact dropping Eischens back
slightly. After running a solid fourth Jason Johnson had his hands full
with Nerland as he was starting to move forward. With seven laps left in
the feature lapped traffic started to come into play as the front two worked
the traffic side by side. With four to go Krause took the lead and held
it to the checkers but Wehlage was right there still searching for a faster
line.
The Classic Dwarf car race was hotly contested in the front with five
different drivers having a legitimate chance at the win. After the
missing man pace lap David Marso moved from the outside of the front row to
take the lead. Marso makes the long haul from Sioux Falls SD almost
every week and had his best run of the season. The field stacked up
behind Marso with Rick Utley moving to the top of the track, behind him Brian
Kiehne and Jeff Jech were side by side for fourth. These top five with
Tate Bestor in second slowly pulled away from the field. A caution with
11 to go bunched the field back up. With 7 to go on the
second restart Corey Whalen moved inside the top five and had a good race
going with Utley for third. Bestor was busy hounding Marso for the
lead. Marso and Bestor were side by side at the white flag with Bestor
having a slight advantage. The caution waved as the leaders exited two
as Jeff Jech and Brian Kiehne got together causing a yellow checker as the
field came back around.
After two weeks of exciting racing and non-stop action the WISSOTA Midwest
Modifieds made up for their lack of problems tonight. A twenty four car
field took the green flag but when it was all completed 9 cars were left on
the track to take the checkers. Bob Bunne and Albert Wytaske battled it
hard for the lead early. With thirteen to go Wytaske took the lead for
the last time as the field was 2 & 3 wide behind them. A caution
flew with nine laps to go and on the restart the big one happened.
Coming out of two a three wide race found Tim Siercks collect the outside wall
and Jerry Young running a few car lengths behind him with no where to
go. Seven other cars were damaged as the cars slid across the track
stacking them up. Before the caution Dan Wheeler was on a charge and was
inside the top five when it happened. On the restart Wheeler moved into
the second spot after starting twenty second on the field. Wytaske held
on for the win followed closely by Wheeler.
Matt Durnen and Kelly Anderson paced the field for the first 2 laps as they
raced side by side in the WISSOTA Super Stock Feature . Eventually
Anderson took the spot with the rest of the field running two and three wide
early on. The fast way around the track seemed to be up against the wall
tonight with Bill Clemens, Dustin Nelson and a few others trying to work in
the bottom of the track. It seemed to work early on as they made up a
lot of ground but later everyone was running the fourth of the track.
After a caution flew Dan Nissalke and Kelly Anderson tested their slide job
ability. Nissalke made the first, then Anderson, then Nissalke until the
end of the second restart lap when Nissalke kept up a little more momentum and
Anderson was unable to complete the pass causing him to spin and the caution
flying again. On the restart Nissalke pulled out to a comfortable lead
to take home the win.
Les Duellman used the front row to take the early lead with the field four
wide behind him. Tommy Myer and Dain Schultz battled for third with Joey
Jensen and Mike Sorensen for fifth. After disposing of Schultz, Myer
moved into a race with Bruce Angst for second. Two laps later Myer took
over second as a caution flew for a small spin in two. Duellman took the
lead again but the field fell under caution on the back straight as Darin Toot
got together and took a quick flip on the back stretch. Nate Wasmund was
caught up in the accident and suffered heavy sheet metal damage but was able
to continue. Jensen flew around the flew on the restart moving from
sixth to third up against the wall. Myer moved outside into the lead as
Jensen raced with Duellman for second. Jensen took the spot just as Mark
Noble moved up to make it a three wide battle. With Noble and Duellman
locked into the battle Mike Sorensen used it to his advantage and joined the
fray. Noble and Sorensen cleared Duellman with Noble in second and Sorensen in
third as they chased Myer to the line. Myer became the twelfth different
winner in fourteen races.
Barry Underdahl says it all on this night. Underdahl started on the pole
position and checked out from the field sometimes building up a full straight
advantage. There were some wicked battles behind him early on with Jerry
Bloom running second and a four car battle for third behind him. Bloom
was running a high line in one and two with Ben Mattick and Lance Matthees
chasing him around the track. Bloom got a little loose in two and slid
up into the wall slowing his momentum with Mattick and Matthees getting around
him. Troy Brandt and Brad Waits moved up to battle with Bloom. The
race was called with 3 laps to go after a red flag incident on the front
stretch. The Yaggy & Timm machines were hooked together and the
Novotny machine spun to try and avoid them and as he ran into them the Bear
machine piled into them also. All four machines suffered heavy damge
with the Novotny machine literally disintegrated on the track. The fuel
cell section came off the back of the car and the race was called due to
safety. The Timm machine also sustained heavy damage. The great
news is the cars did exactly what they are suppose to do and all drivers
walked away.
