Swenson Tops Winged Warriors
By Bill Nelson
June 19, 2004
A beautiful and sunny day welcomed the WISSOTA Sprint Cars to the Deer Creek
Speedway on Freedom Exterior Night. A smooth and fast track greeted the
123 drivers checking into the back gate and the excellent crowd in the
stands. Steve Yaggy gave away another bicycle tonight to one lucky kid
and hundreds of free gifts were distributed to the fans throughout the night.
The Classic Dwarf Cars pulled onto the track for their feature action first
with David Lewison taking the early lead from the inside of row two.
From sixth place on back the field was two wide for the first five laps.
Eric Wiste was working on the bottom of David Marso for the second position
with Brian Kiehne and Drew Jech racing side by side right behind that
group. Wiste spun coming out of four and into the infield but kept the
motor running and rejoined the field shuffling the field slightly as he slid
in front of the field. Brian Kiehne moved up to battle with Marso for
the second spot. With ten to go Kiehne takes over the second spot but
Marso pulled back alongside for a lap until Kiehne finally gained control over
the spot. With seven laps left Lewison had pulled out to a three quarter
of straight lead as Jeff Jech moved up to the rear bumper of Marso. Rick
Utley and Drew Jech battled for the fifth spot with Tate Bestor joining into
the fray at the white flag. Lewison came home with the win followed by
Kiehne and Marso.
The WISSOTA Super Stock feature was breathtaking with the crowd jumping to
their fee the last two laps. Adam Stockhausen took the early lead moving
outside of Kelly Anderson on the high side of the track. Anderson used
the low side of the track to work under Stockhausen for the lead on lap
two. Steve Hocovski ran beside of Stockhausen for the next two laps in a
great battle as most of the field ran double file around the track.
Chris Klinger was running the extreme high line and powered to the outside of
Stockhausen and Hocovski for the second spot as the only caution of the event
flew with fifteen to go. Nick Herrick worked into the third spot on the
restart with Hocovski and Brad Waits driving in Dave Haberman's second car
raced for fourth. These two moved alongside of Herrick on the next lap
as they ran three wide for position. Waits gained the advantage while
Anderson was trying to get back around Klinger who gained the lead on the
restart. At the midpoint of the race most of the field was running the
high line on the track against the cushion. With four to go Anderson
dived low out of two to take the lead with Waits following through. With two
to go Anderson, Waits and Klinger went three wide down the back straight with
Brandon Jensen and Stockhausen side by side behind them. As the exited
four these five cars ended up five wide as they raced hard for the win.
Waits fade back with a flat because of the inevetible contact with Anderson
holding on for the win. Jensen worked up from his ninth starting spot to
take second and Stockhausen in another great drive finishing third.
Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products added $1,000 to the WISSOTA
Midwest Modified purse tonight with $100 to each of the top ten
finishers. With the added bonus money a huge field of 38 midwest
modifieds took to the track. After the four heat races and an 18 car
"B" feature the main event took to the track. After two
attempts at starting the feature the field made a go of it on their third
attempt. Joe Wernecke, Brian Hernandez and Ron Houdek raced up front for
the lead. The field ran two and three wide for the first five laps with
Houdek finally taking the advantage up front. Hernandez and Wernecke
continued their battle as thirteenth starting Ryan Weber moved up to battle
with Tim Siercks for the fifth spot. With six laps to go Bob Bunne, Mike
Paulson and twenty first starting Albert Wytaske battled for the sixth
position. Hernandez finally gained control of second as Weber and Siercks
moved up to take over the third and fourth spots while Wernecke spun into the
infield. Houdek held on for the win.
The USRA Modifieds have started out the season without a repeat winner and
tonight continued that record with a new winner in the modified
division. Hank Rollinger held the early advantage with Bobby Sorensen in
hot pursuit. There were some three and four wide battles through the
field with a little tire hopping going on as the cars made light
contact. A quick restart with eighteen to go saw Bobby Sorensen move
under Rollinger into the lead with Karl Fenske and Todd Klees racing for the
second spot as Rollinger dropped back early. Tim Donlinger and Mike
Sorensen mixed it up for the fourth spot as the second caution flew.
Klees moved past Bobby Sorensen on the restart to take the lead until he
slipped up in two with Fenske and Sorensen moving back under him as they ran
three wide. Klees regained the momentum on the top side and back into
the lead. With fifteen laps to go the final caution flew. Klees
lead as Bobby Sorensen slipped up in two dropping back a few positions.
Mike Sorensen then worked around Fenske for the second spot followed closely
by Donlinger. Nate Wasmund started thirteenth and Jay Ihrke fifteenth as
they were working towards the front. With six to go the top three pulled
away as Wasmund, Ihrke, Fenske and Brad Waits were running in a tight pack
battling for spots. Waits was rim riding during the battle just inches
from the wall with Fenske at the bottom and Wasmund and Ihrke in the
middle. Coming to the white Ihrke cleared the pack and Donlinger moved
alongside of Mike Sorensen for second. At the line it was Klees taking
his first win of the season followed by Donlinger and Sorensen.
An excellent field of 24 WISSOTA Sprint Cars made their tour stop at the track
tonight. Local fan Greg Hummel put up and additional $200 to be split up
amongst 4 cars outside of the top twelve. On the initial start Gregg
Bakker had an easy roll-over in turn two. Bakker stayed in the race and
restarted at the rear with a heavily damaged wing. Joe Kouba took the
early lead in the race. Chuck Swenson moved up high on the track to work
the cushion and moved past Ryan York early on in the feature for the second
spot. Brett Geldner moved into a battle with York for the third
spot. With seventeen laps to go in the race Scott Winters pounded the
wall exiting turn four flipping wildly onto the track. After the short
red flag period to clean up the mess Winters walked away from the horrific
crash. Swenson pulled away from the field on the restart followed by
Kouba and defending race winner Dustin Lindquist. Behind the front pack
a lot of dicing for positions were taking place through the field. With
twelve laps to go Swenson started to work through lapped traffic.
Geldner worked past York for the fourth position and Lindquist cleared Kouba
for second. Swenson was strong up front and took home the win.
Next week is Mid Season point's night at Deer Creek; the event will be brought
