Poidinger Masters Modified Madness
By Bill Nelson
May 1, 2004
141 cars and a good crowd were on hand for the Ronald F. Carlsen Enterprises
Incorporated night at Deer Creek Speedway. After some very entertaining
heat races with some awesome racing action the makeup WISSOTA Late Model
feature pulled onto the track for their race that was rained out on April
17th.
Barry Underdahl took the early lead with Jeff Matjeka moving under Lance
Matthees to take over the second spot. With sixteen to go Metjeka moved
under Underdahl to take over the top spot. Brad Waits and Paul Novotny
had a great battle going on for the 5th spot. With thirteen to go
Matthees pulled up to battle with Underdahl for the second spot. Up
front Matjeka had pulled out to almost a straight away lead as Matthees
cleared into second. At this time there were three packs of cars
battling for position and you could tell that the traffic was going to affect
the outcome. With five laps to go Matthees pulled up to the back bumper
of Matjeka as they maneuvered around the first pack of lapped traffic.
With two to go Matthees pulled alongside of Matjeka as the two went side by
side in a spirited battle for the win. Coming out of four to the
checkers Matjeka was held up slightly allowing Matthees to sneak by with the
win by less than a foot.
The Street Stock feature saw point leader Travis Krause sitting on the outside
of the front row. Exiting turn two on the first lap there was a big
stackup of cars to bring out the first caution. On the restart the
streeters were running three and four wide through the field as everyone was
in a hurry to get to the front. Krause pulled into the top spot and was
followed closely by Tom McEldowney. Jason Gabrielson was making his way
towards the front with a slightly damaged nose on the car from the early
incident. Gabrielson was battling with Chuck Nerland for the last part
of the race. Up front it was all Krause as he pulled slowly away from
the field to take the checkers with about a 10 car length lead.
The Midwest Modifieds pulled on the track and they had their problems getting
going tonight. On the first start there was a big stack up of cars as
they exited corner two. On the next restart front row starter Vince
Corbin spun exiting for again collecting a large group of cars. On the
final restart 14 of the 20 cars started the feature. Derrick Bridley
jumped out to the early lead. Albert Wytaske and Ron Houdek battled side
by side for the second spot. As the final caution of the event came out,
dropping five laps off the length of the race. On the restart Wytaske
moved under Bridley for the lead as Houdek moved up to battle for the second
spot. Wytaske stayed out front as Houdek finally slipped into the second
spot. At the stripe it was Wytaske with the win.
The Modified Lites came out for their feature event. Rick Utley used his
starting spot to take the early lead. Bob Bunne worked to the outside of
Utley to take over the spot on lap two with the field running two and three
wide. On lap three Dave Lewison powered by Bunne for the top spot then
as he was exiting the fourth corner he slipped down into the infield.
Bunne took the top spot back followed closely by Brian Kiehne and Jeff Jech.
With 9 laps to go the first caution of the event came out bunching the field
back up. On the restart Bunne continues to lead but Lewison was back up
in striking position. Exiting turn two Lewison pulled into the
lead. Brian Kiehne took over the second spot as Bunne pulled his mount
into the infield. Lewison held on up front to take the win.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were up for their feature. Adam Stockhausen
held the point and looked strong up front early on with Bill Clemens hounding
him in second. Kevin Hager was solidly in third and Dustin Nelson in
fourth. With sixteen to go a caution flew. On the restart Clemens worked
under Stockhausen and drove deep into corner three to take the spot.
Clemens pulled soundly out to a good lead while Nelson slowly picked off
another spot. With eight laps to go Nelson had worked into the second
spot but his run ended prematurely as he pulled into the infield. Clemens
continued to pull away up front taking the checkers with almost a full
straight advantage.
The USRA Modified feature was the best race of the night and had the fans
standing on their feet a few times during the race. On the start Jay
Poidinger took the early lead. Coming through four the car pushed up
slightly allowing Joey Schaefer to take over the lead and Brad Waits moving
through into second. Darin Toot worked into the fourth position as Jesse
Frericks spins in turn three after getting around Poidinger. On the
restart Toot moved around Waits to take over the second position. Going
into turn one something on the Waits machine breaks as he pounds the wall in
turn one. On the next restart Schaefer continues to lead as the field comes
four wide out of turn four. Poidinger moved around the outside of the
pack to move back into the second spot. Todd Klees and Karl Fenske
battle side by side for the third spot, while up front Poidinger and Schaefer
had a great battle going on. Hank Rollinger was on the charge working
into the seventh place after starting fourteenth at just past the halfway
point when another caution came out. On the restart Schaefer spun going
into one and backed it into the wall bringing out the final caution of the
event. On the restart Poidinger led with Klees in second but he was on a
mission and pulled along side of Poidinger for the lead on the next lap.
Neil Eckhart also really started to haul around the bottom of the track and
moved into a four wide battle out of four for the third spot after starting
twentieth on the field. Behind that four wide battle there were two rows of
three wide racing as the whole field was bunched up trying to get to the
front. Klees took the white flag by a half car and exiting four
Poidinger got a great run off the highside and pulled past Klees for the
win. The win was the first for Poidinger at Deer Creek and his first win
in three years.
Jon Chrest used the outside front row starting spot to take the early lead in
the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Bob Timm brought out his new car this
week and was in second as a three wide battle for fourth raged on. With
fifteen to go Timm moved under Chrest to take over the top spot. Two
laps later Mark Teske and Brad Waits split Chrest to take over the second and
third spots. Waits was running up high and Teske and Timm were both
running the bottom of the track. With eight laps to go in the feature
event Paul Novotny was moving up from his fourteenth starting spot to work
into the top five. Teske moved past Timm to take the lead for a few laps
until a slow car got in his way and Timm moved back out front as a caution
flew. On the restart Teske took the lead on the bottom coming out of two
but Timm turned down under Teske to take the lead going into three. As
the two went into three they touched and Timm pounded the outside wall
collecting Novotny and Jerry Bloom in the wreck. It was a hard hit and
luckily Timm was okay but you can't say the same thing about his new
car. On the restart Waits took advantage of the action and took over the
top spot as Matthees and Chrest battles for second. Waits stayed up
front to take home the win.
Next weeks racing action will include all 6 classes of cars and will be
sponsored by Glynn's Motor Mart of Grand Meadow and Hayfield. A special
thanks to track sponsors Hyland Motor Company, Tesk-Holm Enterprises,
