10th Anniversary "Gold" Potawatomi Governor's Cup to be Awarded at Crandon Off-Road Races

Crandon, WI -- To honor the 10th Anniversary of the Potawatomi Heavy Metal Governor's Cup race at Crandon Raceway, a one-of-a-kind "gold" Governor's Cup has been prepared to award the winner of the 2003 race.  The 10th annual race will take place June 22 at the Forest County Potawatomi Brush Run races.  The race is the feature event of a weekend of off-road racing at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway.

Previous Cup's have been silver.  The top of the Cup is adorned with a flying eagle.  The award is named in honor of the Office of the Governor of the State of Wisconsin.   Presiding Governor's are invited to award the Cup each year.

The Governor's Cup race, a 10 lap shootout over Crandon's 1.75-mile track, features high performance 4x4 and 2-wheel drive pickups in an all out sprint race.  Winner of the 2003 event takes home a mega-dollar purse of more than $15,000 in cash and prizes, as well as the special "Gold" Governor's Cup.

Toyota Trucks Seeks Governor's Cup Win at Crandon Races

Toyota Trucks, a brand that has dominated professional off-road racing in recent years, has announced it will continue an extraordinary contingency prize for one of the most celebrated off-road races in the country -- the 10th annual Potawatomi Governor’s Cup race to be held at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway Sunday, June 22.

The giant car and light-duty truck manufacturer will be posting a $2,000 contingency prize to any Toyota truck racer winning the 2003 race and taking home the special 10th anniversary limited edition gold cup.

Johnny Greaves, DePere, WI, nearly won the Cup last year in a Toyota Tundra and he was the first 4x4 to finish the event. The Greaves entry is sponsored by the Forest County Potawatomi.   If Greaves wins this weekend, he will take home more than $20,000 in cash and prizes -- thanks to the additional money from Toyota.  The race for the heralded Potawatomi Governor’s Cup will be held Sunday, June 22 at 4 p.m.

While Crandon has been conducting off-road races for 34 years, the race for the Governor Cup is in its 10th season.  Initiated by the Forest County Potawatomi and Crandon officials, the first Governor’s Cup Challenge was held in 1994.  Curt LeDuc, Cherry Valley, CA, won the inaugural race and former governor Tommy Thompson presented the cup.  The race is open to both 4x4 and 2-wheel drive high performance, high horsepower trucks that meet 2003 Championship Off-Road Racing Rules.

According to Tom O‘Connor, Toyota Racing Development, the posting of the $2,000 contingency money “is part of Toyota’s goal to continue to dominate professional off-road racing.”  O’Connor noted that “we believe Toyota has the best drivers and I know we have the best trucks."  He said, “Our intention is to reward any Toyota driver who can bring us a win in the Potawatomi Governor’s Cup Challenge at Crandon.”

O’Connor complimented Crandon track officials on conducting the finest professional off-road racing in the country.  “Crandon is truly the Daytona 500 of off-road racing and the entire weekend is not to be missed,” he said.
