Johnsonville Formula 4x4 Race Trucks Return at Crandon & Bark River Raceways
NEWS from Crandon International Off-Road Raceway, Crandon, WI - 715-478-5815
CRANDON, WI -- Crandon International Off-Road Raceway, in cooperation with
Johnsonville Sausage, will feature the return of semi-pro 4x4 race trucks this
season. The 2003 race schedule for the race class has been expanded.
According to Jay Schaefer, who helps manage Crandon sanctioned events, the
Formula 4x4 class was a real growth area for off-road short course truck
racers. "We had at least 18 entries last year for Formula 4x4
trucks at both of our race weekends," said Schaefer. "Formula 4x4
race trucks were a crowd favorite and there were more F4x4 racers than in any
other race class, pro or amateur," he said. Formula 4x4
trucks are a hybrid class incorporating Class 3 and Stadium Pro Tuff
Trucks. Class 3 is a former SODA and current SCORE (desert) race
vehicle.
Jerry Bundy, Tolland, CT, won the 2002 Johnsonville Formula 4x4 Championship
and earned nearly $4,000 at the two Crandon events. Bundy was also
winner of the 2002 World Championship Formula 4x4 race, earning the World
Championship title for the year. He enters the 2003 season as the
reigning champ.
Schaefer noted that "fast and loud 4x4s, built and maintained by
grassroots racing teams, continue to be the legacy of off-road racing at
Crandon". Schaefer noted that due to the success of last season,
Formula 4x4 racing has been expanded to Michigan. Formula 4x4 trucks
will race at the U.P. 100 in Bark River, MI, twice this season. Crandon
has worked closely with Bark River off-road track personnel for many years.
"We are excited about having Formula 4x4 race trucks in the Upper
Peninsula this season," said Tom Lanaville of the Bark River
facility. Crandon has conducted off-road races for 34 years, while the
Bark River facility has been at it for 28 years.
Johnnsonville Formula 4x4 race events in 2003 are:
June 21-22, 2003, Potawatomi Brush Run Races, Crandon Raceway
July 12-13, 2003, Bark River, MI
August 9-10, 2003, Bark River, MI
August 29-31, BorgWarner World Championships, Crandon, WI .
The Johnsonville Sausage Formula 4x4 events at Crandon are unique in racing
circles. Formula 4x4 drivers will race for the coveted Formula 4x4
Crandon World Championship Title on Saturday, August 31 at the BorgWarner
World Championship Off-Road Races. Winner will receive a special World
Championship off-road ring. Crandon has been awarding World Championship
rings in various classes for the last 19 of the track's 34 years of racing.
In addition, Crandon has announced the following commitments by Johnsonville
to the Formula 4x4 Series Points Champion:
1. A one year supply of Johnsonville brats. Every month,
Johnsonville will deliver a case of brats so the F4x4 Crandon
champion can
celebrate all year long with family and friends!
2. An official Johnsonville Weber grill to cook all those brats on all
year long!
3. A limited edition Johnsonville cooler to match the Johnsonville Weber
grill!

Additional prizes have been posted by Johnsonville for the runner-up to the
points champion, such as a one month's supply of Johnsonville brats.
"My family and team have been enjoying Johnsonville brats for the last 10
months," said Bundy, who was the first winner of a years' supply of the
famous sausage. "We've figured out several great ways to cook
them," said the Connecticut-based racer.
Phil's Inc., is also participating with contingency prizes to the new
class. "We were pleased with the success of the Johnsonville and
Crandon grassroots program and have expanded our participation in 2003,"
said Mike Reusche of Phil's Inc. The suburban Chicago parts outlet has
posted an additional $250 cash to the winner of the Formula 4x4 series in 2003
and a pair of TRW/Powerstop cross-drilled brake rotors with a retail value up
to $500. Phil's will also reward the Series runner up with $100 and a
pair of TRW/Powerstop Extreme Performance Pads with a retail value up to
$100. To be eligible for the Phil's prize, racers must display a Phil's
Inc. decal on both sides of their race vehicle at all eight race events.
The Johnsonville Sausage Formula 4x4 Series Points Purse exceeds $4,000 in
cash and prize value. The Points Champion will receive $1,000 cash.
Runner-up will receive $600 cash. Third place in overall points will
receive $400.
"This is definitely a very unique and special sponsorship by Johnsonville
Sausage," said Cliff Flannery, president, Crandon Raceway. " It is
unique in racing, he said. "We also appreciate the fine support of
Phils, Inc. with this growing group of racers and the sponsorship of other
off-road teams at our track," said Flannery.
Official sponsor for the Crandon Raceway Formula 4x4 Race Truck program is
Johnsonville Sausage, maker of Johnsonville brats and other fine meat
products. Johnsonville has been a long time sponsor at Crandon
International Off-Road Raceway. "We are excited about working with
Johnsonville and Formula 4x4 racers to make the Formula 4x4 class a
success," said Flannery. "Johnsonville is a
Wisconsin-based company supporting the country's largest off-road race
facility in the country, which also happens to be in their 'backyard',"
said Flannery.
Winner of the inaugural 2001 World Championship Formula 4x4 race was Mike
Falsetti, South Bend, IN.
