Doar, Miller, Anderson, Peterson, Tourville & Ebert Claim DTRA 100 Feature Victories
New Richmond, WI - 9/18/2006 - The first of the four nights of the inaugural
DTRA 100 got underway Wednesday night as Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, and
Midwest Modifieds hit the high banks of Cedar Lake Speedway. With 41
Pure Stocks, 47 Street Stocks, and a remarkable 84 Midwest Modifieds filling
the pit area, there was plenty of great racing to get things underway.
Fans were entertained by 15 wild heat races and 7 b-features. These
races set the fields using passing points for the first ever DTRA 100
features.
The first feature to hit the track on Wednesday night were the DTRA Pure
Stocks with Nate Synmoniak and Skeeter Estey drawing the front row based on
their passing point totals. Synmoniak used the pole position to jump out
to a lap 1 lead and was followed by Dan Ebert from row two until a caution
flew on lap 1. On the restart Synmoniak was able to hold off Ebert for a
couple of laps until finally on lap 4, Ebert was able to get by and take the
lead. On the following lap Estey was able to move by Synmoniak as well
and take over second. Ebert stretched out his lead as the laps winded
down and that was all he needed as he took the checkered to pick up the big
feature win at the inaugural DTRA 100.
Next up the DTRA Street Stocks came rolling out onto the speedway for their
feature, lead by Charlie Novak and Shane Kisling on the front row. Once
the green flew, Keith Tourville used the inside of the speedway to move by the
front row and take the leap on lap 1. Mark Froehlich and Butch Madsen
both followed Tourville on the inside and took over the second and third
positions as well until a lap 1 caution in turn 3 flew and bunched up the
field. After a couple more early cautions, Tourville was able to check
out on the field, leaving Madsen and Froelich to do battle behind him, with
Madsen getting by Froelich on lap 6. While this was going on, Jason
Vandekamp was closing in on the second place battle and it didn’t take him
long to move into third ahead of Froelich. Vandekamp then caught Madsen
but was unable to get by him for second as Tourville dominated out front and
lead wire-to-wire to take home his first DTRA 100 victory.
Our third and final feature of the evening was the DTRA Midwest Modifieds.
Andy Jones and Greg Thell lead the field to the green from the front
row. With the green flag flying over the field, Thell took off into the
lead and was followed by Jones and Brady Peterson from the second row.
Thell went on to lead lap 1, but that was short lived as Jones was able to get
by him to lead lap 2. Soon after, Thell had a breakdown of his machine
as he came down the backstretch and brought out the first caution, forcing his
night to be over. On the restart Peterson used his new second starting
position to get by Jones to lead lap 3 and was followed by Dallas Gulbarnson
who moved into second. More problems at the front of the field ensued as
Jones spun in turn 1 to bring out the caution on lap 5. After that
Peterson and Gulbarnson checked out on the field and made it a two way battle
for the top spot the rest of the way home. Gulbarnson just didn’t have
enough to get by Peterson as Peterson came out of turn 4 to take the checkered
flag and win his first DTRA 100 in his rookie season.
The finale of the inaugural DTRA season came to a close Saturday night.
The 100 had finally arrived! After months of planning and expectation
fans were delivered a weekend of non-stop action along with huge car
counts. The new format created excitement, multiple races, stories and
delivered the same tradition accustomed to late fall events.
After two complete shows of preliminary qualifiers the field was set for the
final night of the DTRA 100. The first 8 finishers in Thursday and
Friday’s Qualifying Features set the first 8 rows in the big dance.
Those drivers not already locked in accumulated passing points in their heat
races from the previous nights. Their accumulated passing points place
them into equal B-Features. Six cars transferred from the B-Features and
created the next 3 rows. Finally the drivers were given one last chance
to make the Feature by way of a Last Chance Qualifier. The top 2 in the
LCQ tagged the tail of the lineup. Truly a unique format giving drivers
up to 6 chances to make the final race on Saturday night!
DTRA Super Stocks were the first of the three final features of the
event. Ryan Aho and Ashley Anderson took their respective front row
starting spots and led the field to the green. Anderson quickly assumed
the lead with Larry Boumeester in second and Aho in third. The field
began battling for position throughout as the track was lightening fast top to
bottom. Aho and fourth place runner Mike Weber were putting considerable
pressure on Boumeester for the second spot. At the halfway point it was
still Anderson pacing the field with Aho and Boumeester side-by-side at the
stripe ahead of Weber and Ron Jones in fifth. Positions sixth through
tenth included JB Stortz, Dale Gangl, Kelly Anderson, Greg Nippoldt and Dan
Carlson. Anderson was lapping slower machines left and right as the
field battled for the second spot. Aho and Boumeester were waging a
small war out there as the pair traded the spot a dozen times with Weber and
Jones waiting in the wings for an opportunity. At the checkers it was
Anderson by a nice margin with Boumeester winning the battle for second ahead
of Aho, Weber and Jones in fifth. Congratulations to Ashley and his team
on a great season and DTRA 100 feature victory!
The DTRA Modifieds rolled out next for their finale of the weekend with
Darrell Nelson and Jason Miller hitting the gas out front. Miller took
the lead early on with Nelson falling into second spot. Behind them Ron
Jones, Brad Waits and Al Uotinen were the top five. A problem erupted
for Nelson on lap five as he pulled his machine off the speedway giving up the
second position. A very quick field was a benefit to Miller as he
hadn’t encountered a single lapped machine when he took the halfway
sticks. Behind Miller, Jones and Waits were putting on a great show for
the crowd as they traded paint over several laps before Waits drove past on
the high side on lap 17. By this time Brent Larson had found the
fast way around the speedway as he moved into fourth spot ahead of Uotinen and
Jim Chyba who were dueling for the fifth spot. In the process Larson got
tangled with Chyba and Uotinen sending the three spinning in turn two on lap
24 of 30. Larson was tagged with the caution and sent to the rear.
On the restart, Miller led Waits and Jones to the green for the six lap dash
to the checkers. Jones dove low and pulled even temporarily with Miller
until Miller powered back around. Waits moved past into second at the
two-to-go sticks, now with Ron Schreiner pulling even with Jones in a battle
for the third spot. At the checkers it was Miller leading Jones, Waits,
Schreiner, and Chyba rounding out the top five. Congratulations to Jason
and his team on a great season and DTRA 100 win his second ever at Cedar Lake
Speedway!
DTRA Super Late models stormed out for the final event of the weekend with Pat
Doar and Steve Laursen out front. Doar took command early on with
Laursen settling into second followed by Darrell Nelson, Terry Casey and
Justin Richie in the fifth spot. An early caution flew for Jim Carlson
spinning down the backstretch on lap six. On the restart Doar resumed
command with Laursen taking second and a pile of cars battling for the third
spot. As the dust settled it was Richie emerging in the third spot with
Nelson in fourth and Joel Cryderman in fifth. A second caution flew for
debris on the racetrack on lap 12 with Doar still strong out front. On
the restart Doar held strong but had a three-wide battle for second close
behind. Cryderman, Richie, and Laursen all battled hard for the spot
with Cryderman and Richie eventually walking away and tracking down Doar.
By the halfway mark Richie had pulled even with Doar for the lead and those
two battled it out over a series of laps before Richie took the position on
lap 24. A great battle ensued between Richie, Doar and Cryderman for the
lead as the trio evaded lapped traffic as well. Behind the three were
Brent Larson, Nelson and Steve Laursen battling for the fourth spot. The
track was perfect, allowing the competitors to battle from top to bottom.
On lap 35, still the three way battles for both first spot and fourth spot
raged on. Doar running his typical high line pulling even with Richie at
the line with three to go! Doar moved yet a touch higher and found just
enough traction to drive past Richie on lap 38. Richie fought back all
the way to the finish line but not quite enough as Doar claimed the victory
and capped an amazing race and even better weekend. Richie came home
second followed by Cryderman, Larson and Nelson. Congratulations again
to Pat and his team on their track championship, DTRA National Championship
and now DTRA 100 feature win. Wow.
