Doar And Cain Both Claim 3rd Straight Track Championships At Cedar Lake
New Richmond, WI - 8/20/2006 - Season Championships are upon us already as
Cedar Lake crowned its 2006 track point’s champions in the Super Late Model
and Modified classes. Pat Doar in the Super Late Models and Dave Cain in
the Modifieds both amazingly made it three in a row as they both can call the
2004 and 2005 championships theirs as well. Both Pat and Dave took the
their respective classes by storm this season with Pat picking up four feature
wins at the speedway and Dave with a whooping seven. Both Doar and Cain
fought off tough competition in the form of Brent Larson in the Super Late
models and Joey Jensen in the Modifieds. On Championship night number
one, another great field of 128 cars checked in to do battle on a beautiful
late August evening.
A full program of heat races and three B features were run before the five
main events. DTRA Street stocks were the first features of the night
with Ryan Kostreba and Brian Loss redrawing the front row. Kostreba held
on to the early lead as Loss fell back in traffic. Keith Tourville came
from the fifth starting spot and moved past Kostreba and company to take the
lead on lap three. Once out in clean air Tourville had no trouble
walking away from the field and cruised off uncontested to the feature
victory.
DTRA Midwest Mods were up next with Alan Bohlman and Jason Gross leading the
field to the green. Bohlman launched like a rocket ship and grabbed a
quick five car length lead on Gross early on. The first yellow flew on
lap four as National Point leader Greg Chesley spun the 97C machine. On
the restart Bohlman and Gross ignited a fierce battle for the point over the
next few circuits until Bohlman eventually won the battle and solidified the
position. Behind the two leaders, Dan Wheeler was charging hard through
the pack and soon was pressuring Gross for second. A lap 13 pass put
Wheeler in second, but too little too late as Bohlman had built up too much of
a lead for Wheeler to run down. Bohlman walked off to the checkers and
picked up the feature win.
DTRA Super Stocks marched out next with Dave Emerfoil and Kelly Anderson out
front. Anderson used the high side to dart out to the early advantage
over Emerfoil and Larry Boumeester until a lap two caution flew for a Ryan
Wiome spin. On the restart Anderson held strong out front with now
Boumeester in second and Emerfoil shuffled back to third. Boumeester
took only four laps to catch Anderson and complete the pass for the
lead. Boumeester looked rock solid out front as he continued to put
distance between himself and the field despite a series of caution
flags. Behind Boumeester it was Anderson, Jim Gullikson, Emerfoil and
Dave Friendt rounding out the top five. The best battle on the speedway
was four the fifth spot with four or five drivers each taking the spot at one
time or another. As the race wound on, Anderson began reeling in
Boumeester just when a caution flew on lap 17 bunching up the field for a
restart with three laps remaining. But the caution mattered little as
Boumeester held on for his fifth feature victory of the season followed across
the stripe by Anderson and Greg Nippoldt with a great run coming from the 16th
starting spot.
DTRA Modifieds were up next with Jason Gross and Shawn Polonoski out
front. Gross used the low line to take the early lead but only two laps
into the event he had company from track points champion Dave Cain as Cain
quickly got by for the lead. As Cain began pulling away from the field,
he soon found himself with a whole lot of Craig Thatcher to deal with Thatcher
moved into second and began putting pressure on Cain for the lead.
Behind them it was Gross, Joey Jensen, Darrell Miller, Brent Larson and Ron
Schreiner all trading point for the fifth spot. But back up front Cain
found another gear and again put distance between himself and the rest of the
field led by Thatcher. As quickly as the race started it ended as it went
green-white-checkered straight to the finish with Cain in fitting fashion
taking the checkers and picking up his eighth feature win of the year in
addition to the track championship.
DTRA Super Late Models stormed out next with Tom Nesbitt and Darrell Nelson
handling front row duties. Nesbitt led lap one but Nelson came back on
the high side to lead lap two. Mike Nutzmann saw the fun up front and he
split the pair and lead lap three. Nutzmann found a third gear and
literally walked away from the field as he had built a straightaway advantage
over Nesbitt and company by lap eight. As Nutzmann was dealing with
lapped traffic up front, Terry Casey and Nesbitt were waging a battle for the
second spot with Joel Cryderman waiting in the wings for an opening.
Casey eventually moved by Nesbitt with Cryderman following suit and moving
into third on lap 19. Not long after a great battle erupted for the
second spot with track champion Pat Doar and Brent Larson joining Casey and
Cryderman. You could have thrown a blanket over the four of them as they
were almost four-wide at one point. Casey ended up winning that battle
but up front Nutzmann was literally in a class of his own tonight at he took
the checkers over a straightaway ahead of the pack. Certainly an
impressive win for Nutzmann with the fans also getting a treat tonight in the
form of the awesome battle for second throughout the entire race. With
the fourth place finish, Doar locked up his third track championship in a row
and now sets his sights on the DTRA National point’s championship.
