Race To DTRA Championship Chase Wraps Up At Cedar Lake

New Richmond, WI - 7/30/2006 - The much anticipated race for the chase format being implemented in the DTRA National point standings came to conclusion this past Saturday night.  117 racing machines checked into the pits to do battle for the evening and ultimately decide the top 10 point getting in each class, thus qualifying them for “The Chase.”  All points accumulated throughout the season up to this point determine the top 10 drivers in each class and those 10 are locked into the “DTRA National Championship Chase.”  DTRA drivers competing this year at the Cedar Lake, Superior, or River Cities Speedways were eligible for the chase.  At the time of writing this article, the top 10 drivers who made the chase were not available.  Check out either www.DTRAracing.com or www.cedarlakespeedway.com for the final results on the DTRA National Championship Chase qualifiers from each class.

DTRA Streeters strolled onto the speedway for the first feature of the evening with Mark Froehlich and Chris Peterson on row one.  On the first lap fifth place starter Brian Loss initially got sideways before rolling the 37 machine completely over in turn three bringing the field under the red flag.  On the second start attempt Froehlich led the way with Peterson running second and Jason Vandekamp occupying third.  At the halfway mark Froehlich still led the way with Peterson and Vandekamp in hot pursuit when a caution flew for Shawn Kammerud and Keith Tourville tangling off turn four.  On the restart Froehlich held on to the lead and cruised the final several circuits to take the checkers for the feature victory.

DTRA Midwest Mods were up next with Alan Bohlman and Brandon Lampert bringing the field to the green.  Lampert got the jump on the start and led the field off the first corner with Bohlman, Dan Wheeler, Jim Schweitzer, and Jason Gross rounding out the top five.  By lap five Wheeler had taken the lead away from Lampert with Bohlman holding tight in second.  A yellow at the halfway mark for a Mike Hausken breakdown slowed and bunched the field behind Wheeler.  On the restart Bohlman pressured the heck out of Wheeler for the lead, but Wheeler held strong until yet another caution fell for a Lampert spin in turn two.  Lampert was given his spot back as Jason Gross was tagged with causing the spin.  Wheel yet again held strong on the restart but Bohlman continued to apply to fender.  Instead of the white flag coming out, the yellow was displayed for a spin in turn three.  Wheeler took the green with two-to-go and held off Bohlman to claim the feature victory ahead Shawn Phillips who made a great move on Bohlman on the final lap to claim the second spot.

DTRA Super Stocks marched out next with Larry Boumeester and Greg Nippoldt redrawing the front row.  Boumeester took the early lead with Nippoldt falling in behind.  The field came under a caution early as JB Storts, who was in competition for one of the final chase spots, lost a rear axle on the 22 machine and retired from the race.  On the restart Boumeester pulled away from the filed as a battle for second spot developed between Nippoldt, Dan Carlson and Mike Loomis.  Boumeester still led at the halfway mark with Nippoldt winning the battle for second.  As Boumeester led the final number of circuits, the real action was behind in the battle for the sixth spot as five cars all traded the position.  Meanwhile Boumeester picked up yet another feature win ahead of Nippoldt, Carlson, Loomis and Gorka.

DTRA Modifieds took to the speedway next with Craig Thatcher and Scott Splittstoesser sharing the front row.  After two failed attempts at the start, the field made the third one work with Thatcher absolutely leaving the field in his dust as pulled out to a straightaway advantage on the field in less than five laps.  But the action behind Thatcher was great as Splittstoesser, Jason Miller, Brent Larson and Dave Cain all were slicing and dicing up the top five positions until a yellow flew as Don Brightbill lost a right rear wheel.  On the restart Thatcher remained in control with the field sorting itself out behind until a yellow for a spin slowed and bunched the field on lap 10.  Thatcher again held strong out front initially but soon had a battle with Cain as the pair went side-by-side for several laps.  Thatcher held the edge as Cain just didn’t have the needed momentum to get by.  A caution flew on lap 16 for debris which is exactly what Thatcher didn’t want to see as it put Cain and the field right back on him bumper for a late race restart.  On the restart Dave Cain had just moved along Thatcher for the lead when another caution flew, resetting the field on the lap completed lap.  Thatcher was again given the lead for a restart with only two laps left.  The pair went literally side by side at the white flag with Cain taking the slight advantage exiting turn two.  Cain held the advantage entering the final turn but Thatcher, the wily veteran racer he is, used a great diamond move to dive under a sliding Cain as the pair had a drag race to the checkers.  At the stripe if was Thatcher by probably two feet or less picking up the victory in a race that brought nearly every fan in attendance to their feet!  A great finish to a great race.

DTRA Super Late Models thundered onto the speedway next with Joel Cryderman and Brent Laursen handling front row duties.  An early caution came out as Brent Laursen in the U car and Rick Egersdorf got tangled exiting turn two on only the second lap bringing out the caution.  Steve Laursen was given credit for the lead with Joel Cryderman following behind for the restart.  On the restart, National Points leader Terry Casey spun out Eric Breeschoten bringing out the yellow again and sending Casey to the back.  On the ensuing restart it was Laursen again leaving the field in his wake with Cryderman, Breeschoten, Brent Larsen, and Mike Goodremote holding down the top five.  At the halfway point Steve Laursen still led but not by much as Cryderman and Breeschoten had closed the gap and began making their presence known until a lap 15 caution slowed the field for a Paul Hipsag spin.  Laursen held strong on the restart as he put some distance between himself and the field.  A good battle was brewing between Joey Jensen and Brent Larson for the fourth spot until Jensen muscled it away.  As the laps wound on Laursen continued to show his strength as Cryderman and the rest of the field just could not do anything him.  That was until a slip on the cushion by Laursen pulled Cryderman with a few car lengths on lap 25.  But that was as close as Cryderman was going to get as Laursen again pulled way and walked on to the checkers to collect another feature victory this season.  Joey Jensen came from the 14th starting spot and ended up getting by Cryderman on the final circuit to come home second in a great run for the Q car.
