Vandekamp, Chesley, Davis, Cain, And Doar Pick Up Features At Cedar Lake

New Richmond, WI - 7/16/2006 - With the mercury about ready to pop the top right off the thermometer, fans at Cedar Lake were in for a cool treat this past Saturday night with 109 DTRA racing machines flingin’ dirt, tradin’ paint and bendin’ sheet metal over an evening of racing.  Some surrounding speedways cancelled their respective race programs due to the abnormally hot weather, but not the dedicated drivers, fans and staff at Cedar Lake.  Instead of turning down the lights for the night, the action heated up on the track with a basket of great heat races in all five classes and five features that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

DTRA Street Stocks were the first feature of the evening with Mike Kalkbrenner and Shawn Kammerud redrawing front row spots.  Kalkbrenner moved out front early ahead of Kammerud until a lap three caution slowed the field.  On the restart Kalkbrenner held strong but this time had a new challenger in Mark Froehlich.  Kalkbrenner held firm on the field over the majority of the event.  The majority up until lap 12 that is as Kalkbrenner lost the handle on the 29 machine exiting turn two making contact with second place runner Froehlich and eventually ending up on the infield.  Kalkbrenner was tagged with the caution and sent to the back handing the lead to Froehlich.  On the restart Froehlich quickly was passed by Jason Vandekamp and Butch Madsen among others.  Vandekamp only had to hold on to the lead for two laps as he walked away with the feature victory.

DTRA Midwest Mods took the green next with Justin Schill and Mark Trog leading the field to the green.  Schill powered out front early on ahead of Alan Bohlman and Lonnie Louschke until a lap three caution slowed the field.  On the restart it was Schill holding onto the lead but now had a rearview mirror full of Greg Chesley.  Chesley quickly drove around Schill to assume command just about the time a second caution flew for debris on the speedway.  On the restart Chesley held tough out front until third place runner Alan Bohlman spun the 22 machine bringing out another yellow.  Chesley bolted on to a 10 car length lead on the field after the restart with Schill and now Trog trying to reel him back in.  As the laps wound on, Schill tried to catch the leader but it didn’t look like it was going to happen until a lap 13 caution bunched up the field for a green-white-checkered restart.  Chesley handled the pressure without much trouble as he held off Schill and company and pick up the feature win.

DTRA Super Stocks rolled out next with Mike Weber and Joel Collins lining the front row.  Weber got an early jump on the field with Cory Davis following in behind and Greg Nippoldt finding the third spot.  At the halfway point it was Weber by a slim margin over Davis as the two began a good multi-lap battle for the lead.  Behind them Nippoldt had third spot nailed with JB Storts and Tim Borgeson rounding out the top five.  On lap 12 that battle for the lead ended ad Davis threw a great move on Weber coming out off turn four to take the point.  As Davis began pulling away a yellow flag flew for a Justin Dodge breakdown and that bunched the field putting Weber right on the rear bumper of leader Davis for a restart with six laps left.  On the restart Davis held off a Weber slide job and began putting some distance between himself and the field.  At the stripe it was Davis by ten car lengths ahead of Weber and Storts in third to pick up his first ever feature win at Cedar Lake.

DTRA Modifieds pulled out next with Chris Magistad and Ryan Olson showing the way to the green.  The field immediately three wide in several spot including the front row with Magistad going three wide with Dave Cain and Brent Larson.  Cain won the initial battle and assumed the lead with Larson finding second and very quickly twelfth place start Craig Thatcher moving into the third spot.  Once out front Cain literally put a straightaway between himself and Larson before Thatcher moved past and took control of the second spot behind the rocket ship of Cain.  That huge lead that Cain built up was erased in the blink of an eye as the caution flew for a Jason Miler spin in turn three on lap 11.  On the restart Cain led Thatcher, Larson, Darrell Nelson and Ron Schreiner to the line.  Cain and Thatcher distanced themselves from the field as the Cain then proceeded to put distance between himself and Thatcher.  As the laps wound on Cain had no difficulty out front with Thatcher holding down second and now Schreiner, Larson and Nelson all battling hard for the third spot.  At the checkers it was Cain leading Thatcher and company across to pick up the win.

DTRA Late Models thundered out next for the final event of the evening with Brandon Jensen and Bryan Wennen manning front row duties.  Jensen jumped out front early with Wennen holding second.  On lap two Eric Breeschoten used the low groove to motor past the top two and take the lead away from Jensen.  A lap three caution flew for a Mike Bear spin in turn two.  On the restart it was Breeschoten holding off Jensen who soon but soon had Pat Doar knocking on his door.  The caution flew a lap later for a Mike Nutzmann breakdown.  Breeschoten led the field to the restart and held on to the lead with Doar banging on his bumper.  Tom Nesbitt quietly moved into the third spot behind Doar and Breeschoten as the field hit the halfway mark.  Breeschoten and Doar were trading the lead at the stripe almost every other lap.  Brent Larson moved past Nesbitt for third and tried running down the lead pair.  With 10 laps to go Larson had come all the way from the 11th starting spot to catch the leaders and make it a three car battle for the lead.  A quick battle it was a Larson drove right on past the two and took control of the event with nine laps remaining.  It stayed that way until second place runner Breeschoten had a breakdown brining out the caution and retiring him from the event.  The restart with three laps remaining showed Doar pull even with Larson at the white flag.  Doar found the cushion to his liking and got a terrific run off turn two to motor past Larson down the backstretch and collect a feature win at the stripe.
