Double Features Highlight Red Hot Night At Cedar Lake
New Richmond, WI - Monday, July 10, 2006 - On one of those mid-summer nights
when just being outside can feel like standing in a sauna, 138 race teams
checked in and battled out a great show in front of the many youngsters and
their parents on Kid’s night at CLS this past Saturday. The fans that
did brave the heat got treated to both a great field of cars and double
features in both the Modified and Super Late Model classes as the features
from June 24th were rained out.
DTRA Modifieds were the first of the two make up features with Jason Miller
and Dennis Jones leading the field to the green. Jones used the high
side to take an early advantage over the field as Miller’s motor let go only
two laps into the event knocking him from competition. Several short
caution flags fell over the field early bunching everybody up behind leader
Jones and Craig Thatcher in hot pursuit. At the halfway point Thatcher
had pulled even with Jones for the lead and the pair went door-to-door for
almost five laps before Thatcher was able to complete the pass and take the
lead away. Behind Thatcher, Jones soon found his hands full with the
likes of Scott Splittstoesser, Dave Cain and Brent Larson all taking turns
knocking on is rear bumper in a battle for the second and third spots.
Out front though it was all Thatcher as he evaded lapped machines in route to
an impressive feature win ahead of Jones who held off Cain, Larson, and
Splittstoesser for the second spot. Believe it or not it was
Thatcher’s first feature win of the season at Cedar Lake and also his first
win in DTRA competition.
DTRA Super Late Models were next with Eric Breeschoten and Joel Cryderman
bringing the field to the green. Cryderman used the topside to his
advantage and jumped ahead early on. A caution on lap three slowed the
field behind Cryderman with Breeschoten and Steve Laursen in tow. It
didn’t take Breeschoten long after the restart to find a way around
Cryderman for the lead and it wasn’t long after that before the pair began
splitting lapped traffic as they went side-by-side in a battle for the
lead. After a great 8 to 10 lap battle for the lead, Breeschoten finally
established himself in front of the field and had to deal with the task of
dodging the wall of lapped traffic ahead of him. While Breeschoten was
using the low line, Cryderman was up top closing the distance with every lap
until a caution flew on lap 24 slowing the field. This would set up a
six lap dash to the cash with Brent Larson running third behind Cryderman and
Breeschoten. With the two-to-got sticks in the air Cryderman used that
top line to power even with Breeschoten at the line. The last circuit
Cryderman powered the 51 machine into turn three but slipped ever so slightly
and that allowed Breeschoten to hold onto the hard earned and well deserved
feature victory! Congrats to Eric and his team on an impressive win.
After a boatload of great heat races following the two makeup features, the
DTRA Street Stocks were the first of the current features with Shawn Kammerud
and Mike Kalkbrenner redrawing the front row. Kalkbrenner jumped out
early but was soon run down by Chris Peterson after coming from the fifth
starting spot. Peterson powered out to a several car advantage over
Kalkbrenner, Mark Froehlich, and Rod Brewe. A battle for the lead
developed with four laps remaining when Kalkbrenner pulled even with Peterson
and the pair went door-to-door for the last several circuits until Kalkbrenner
used the high line to edge out Peterson by half a car length for the win.
DTRA Midwest Mods were up next with Steve Alsaker and Brandon Lampert out
front of the field at the green. It took all of one lap for Jason Gross
to blow past Alsaker and take control of the field. Behind Gross it was
Alan Bohlman and Dan Wheeler in a good battle for the second spot before a
caution fell for debris on the speedway. On the restart Gross resumed
his lead on the field but soon felt heat from Wheeler as the pair began
encountering lapped traffic. As the race wound on it was all Jason Gross
up front as Wheeler never had enough to mount a serious challenge as Gross
cruised on to pick up his second consecutive feature win.
DTRA Super stocks were on deck next with Tim Borgeson and JB Stortz bringing
the field to the green. Stortz darted out right off the
start and lead the field unchallenged for the first few circuits before
feeling pressure from Dan Carlson and Mike Weber in a three way battle up
front. At the same time those three were going three wide for the lead,
there was a three wide battle for the fourth spot between Larry Boumeister,
Chris Gorka and Tim Borgeson. It soon began a six car battle for the
lead as you could have thrown a blanket over the entire group as they came out
of turn four. At the stripe it was Carlson edging out Boumeister, Stortz,
Weber and Gorka in fifth. A great finish to a terrific race.
Up next the wild DTRA Modifieds took to the track with Joey Jensen and Scott
Splittstoesser handling front row duties. Jensen took quick
control of the race with Splittstoesser falling in second and Dave Cain
sliding into third before a caution flew on lap four. On the restart
Splittstoesser went high and pull along side of Jensen for a bit before Joey
retook command on the bottom. Only a few circuits later Ron Schreiner
used the low side to his advantage and quickly moved into the top five before
finding himself challenging Jensen for the lead. Behind Jensen and
Schreiner up front it was Cain holding of Splittstoesser and Jason Miller for
third. Meanwhile up front Jensen still held solid control of the race as
he cruised to the checkers ahead of Schreiner and Cain. With the victory
Jensen expands his lead on the field in the DTRA Modified point standings.
DTRA Super Late Models stormed onto the speedway next with Steve Hucovski and
Joey Jensen thundering to the green flag out front. Jensen took the
early advantage with Eric Breeschoten finding second and Ashley Anderson
moving into third before a lap three caution flew slowing the field. On
the restart Jensen again resumed command with Breeschoten and now Brent Larson
right behind in third. While Jensen had smooth sailing up front, the
real battle was for the fourth and fifth spots as Hucovski was trying to hold
of a cluster a cars that included Steve Laursen, Toby Patchen, Schreiner,
Caley Emerson among others. Meanwhile up front a battle had developed as
Breeschoten as pulled even with Jensen and the pair traded the top spot for a
series of laps before Jensen retook the point. A scary moment as Jensen
got tangled with a loose lapped machine coming out of turn two sending the
lapped machine into the infield bringing out the caution. Jensen was
given his spot back and on the ensuing restart again held a firm grip on the
lead ahead of Breeschoten and company. A few laps later multiple
incidents happened at once stacking up the field and bringing out the caution
with three laps remaining. The three lap dash for $1,200 to win showed
Jensen held strong against Breeschoten and Brent Larson. On the final
circuit Breeschoten dove the 66 machine high into turn three and was able to
hold on as he used the momentum to beat Jensen to the line by only a couple of
feet! With the win Breeschoten made it a double as he won the makeup
feature earlier in the event. Congrats to Eric and his team again on a
great race and a great night all together.
