Firecracker Special Ignites With Action At Cedar Lake
New Richmond, WI - 7/2/2006 - The Firecracker special at Cedar Lake Speedway
is always a great fun-filled event for the fans and 2006 is no
exception. A beautiful day brought with it a large crowd to watch the
combination of fireworks on the track and fireworks in the sky. Fans got
an extra bonus as last Saturday’s event, June 24th, got rained out after
only the first feature of the night meaning two of the remaining four features
from last week were rescheduled for tonight. DTRA Midwest Mods and Super
Stocks were the makeup features rescheduled for tonight in addition to a full
program of DTRA Street Stocks, Midwest Mods, Super Stocks and Super Late
Models.
The two makeup features were the first to run as they got mixed in with the
night’s heat racing action. Midwest Mods took their feature green flag
first as Carth Mitchell took an early lead on the field followed by Jason
Gross and Vince Corbin. While under a caution, second place runner Gross
lost fire under the hood of his machine forcing him to retire from the
event. On the restart, new third place runner Justin Schill used a great
move to get by both Corbin and Mitchell and assume command of the race.
Once out front Schill had no problems and cruised to the checkers ahead of
Mitchell and Corbin.
In the second makeup and final makeup feature of the event, DTRA Super Stocks
with Larry Boumeister and Rich Bishop adorning the front row. Dan
Carlson made an early move on Boumeister for the lead but didn’t have enough
to complete the pass. Boumeister continued to hold strong throughout the
event even as JB Stortz moved into second spot and tried to reel him in.
Behind Boumeister there were great battles for both the second and fourth
spots. Finishing order for the top five looked like this, Boumeister,
Stortz, Bishop, Carlson, and Mike Weber.
The first of tonight’s features was the DTRA Street Stocks with Mark
Froehlich and Chris Peterson redrawing the front row. The lead for
Froehlich was short lived though as Ron Hanestad quickly moved into the lead
coming from an inside second row starting position. Hanestad fought off
competition all race long from Peterson and Keith Tourville. A late race
caution bunched the field up and let the entire field pull right up to the
bumper of Hanestad for the last few laps. Hanestad and Peterson went
door-to-door until Peterson finally fought past and assumed command with three
laps to go. Tourville and Froehlich battled hard for the third spot with
Tourville winning that battle. But in the end it was Peterson taking the
victory ahead of Hanestad and Tourville.
DTRA Midwest Mods were the next feature up with Justin Schill and Jason Gross
out front early on. Gross moved to the lead on the first lap with Schill
glued to his bumper and Alan Bohlman not far behind either. As the race
wound on it was Gross and Schill in a great side-by-side battle for the lead
ahead of Bohlman and Shawn Phillips battling for the third spot. With
the two-to-go sticks out it was Schill diving low and Gross riding high up on
the cushion. But it just wasn’t to be this night as Gross was too
strong up front as he cruised to the victory out front of Schill and
Phillips.
Dan Carlson and Dale Gangl started up front for the DTRA Super Stock feature
with an early caution slowing the Gangl led field two laps into the
event. On the restart Carlson pulled even with Gangl in a great battle
and behind them it was Tim Borgeson and Greg Nippoldt battling hard for the
third position. As the race hit midpoint it was still a side-by-side
battle for the lead with Carlson beginning to gain a slight advantage coming
off the corners. Nippoldt had overtaken Borgeson for third
and began trying to catch the leaders out front. With four laps left
Gangl had gotten back around Carlson as the pair began splitting lapped
traffic. Carlson again pulled even and edged Gangl to the line for the
white flag. On the last lap Gangl got stuck behind a lapped machine on
the backstretch and fell behind only to pull even and nose Carlson by
literally two feet at the stripe! An unbelievable finish to an
absolutely amazing race.
DTRA Super Late Models were up next with Joey Jensen and Terry Casey redrawing
the front row. Casey assumed early control of the race with Ashley
Anderson drawing close behind. An early caution bunched the field and
let Anderson, Pat Doar and Joey Jensen all get tight up with Casey for the
lead. As the field hit the half way mark, Ron Schreiner had gotten by
Jensen for fourth and soon was putting pressure on Anderson for third. A
caution came out for Joel Cryderman as the 51 machine blew a right front tire
and coasted to a halt in turn three. Anderson also pulled off under the
caution for either a flat tire or mechanical trouble of some kind. At
the restart it was Casey still out front with Doar, Steve Laursen, Schreiner,
and Jensen all in the hunt. The front four literally went four-wide
coming out of turn two for the lead with Doar edging ahead of the pack and
Schreiner to second. Schreiner took less than a lap to drive past Doar
and take the lead to many cheers from the grandstands. Once out front
Schreiner used the bottom side to hold off a rim riding Doar and take the
checkers. Schreiner took the victory ahead of Doar, Laursen, Jensen, and
Tom Nesbitt coming home fifth with a good run.
